Panic was released as a single in 1986 & was the first recording to feature new member Craig Gannon. It was later released on the compilation albums The World Won't Listen and Louder Than Bombs.
Lyrics
Panic on the streets of London
Panic on the streets of Birmingham
I wonder to myself
Could life ever be sane again?
The leeds side-streets that you slip down
I wonder to myself
Hopes may rise on the grasmere
But honey pie, you're not safe here
So you run down
To the safety of the town
But there's panic on the streets of Carlisle
Dublin, Dundee, Humberside
I wonder to myself
Burn down the disco
Hang the blessed DJ
Because the music that they constantly play
It says nothing to me about my life
Hang the blessed DJ
Because the music they constantly play
On the Leeds side-streets that you slip down
The provincial towns you jog 'round
Hang the DJ, hang the DJ, hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, hang the DJ, hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, hang the DJ, hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, hang the DJ, hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, hang the DJ, hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, hang the DJ, hang the DJ
Hang the DJ

"Pareidolia on the streets of London!"🎶 I Love The Smiths and I love this song but wouldn't it have been better if, having prior knowledge of serious, criminal s*xual abuse, the band contacted the authorities rather than composing a catchy song and pocketing the royalties? And therefore profiting from the misery of others?

So true. The lines "Because the music that they constantly play, says nothing to me about my life" are the ones that I love the most because it's so true for me. I feel so disconnected from popular media and culture and the stuff that is going on I cannot relate to anyway, it's like an alien world and I say that as someone who is still pretty young being 29 almost 30 in a few months time. I remember feeling like this as a teenager and the feeling has only increased as I've gotten older.

@@thewomble1509 Is watching movies or series not a way to get cultivated ? I discovered dozens of songs thanks to that, plus how do you define "educate yourself" ? Do you mean the only way to learn about the Smiths is to open a musicology book to ? That is a non-sense, learning something is good no matter what the way used to learn it !

RIP Andy Rourke one of the smoothest and funkiest bass players of all time, you can hear him carrying that back beat also Johnny Marr and Morrissey are a songwriting pair for the ages, My music producer friend and I were listening to Morrissey's solo work earlier and it just isn't the same without The Smiths line up, I wanna throw him love while I'm here as we've been through a lot together, try searching Lonely Gimmick - Roll Me Over, it gives me Smiths jangle pop vibes and I'm honestly so impressed with the tune as he did it all himself on his laptop

Really? I'm only 5 episodes through the season but I wouldn't call it the worst. USS Callister was pretty good and so was Hang the DJ and Crocodile.
