One time I was in a coffee shop at 10 at night, during a thunderstorm, when this song came on the radio. I put away what I was doing. I soaked in the experience. I'm pretty sure my life peaked at that moment. The music washed around me, harmonizing with the drama of the thunder and lightning surrounding the shop. All the others in the coffeeshop looked perfectly in place. I at that time was trying to escape an argumentative mother and a family too chaotic to enjoy. For the few minutes this song played, everything made sense.

That synth also somehow beautifully captures the feeling of being in a car with lights flashing past the window, or lights on the road in the distance, as you’re inside the dark car, being driven through the night. You can feel the life of people “out there”, with those lights in the distance or lights passing, but your own life in the car with that special person is like a secret just for you two.

I have always interpreted this as the speaker spending time with a person that they love, and describing the feelings that go through his/her head when he's around this person. This person provides an escape from the pains that is the speaker' regular life. Being so happy in this moment, with this incredible human being, that they could die, and it would be a good death. What a morbid, yet beautiful feeling.

My girlfriend / wife has sent this song to me before we started a relationship. At this time, we liked The Smiths already and specially "The Queen is Dead" album. But I don't realized what she wanted to mean with a melancholic song like this. "Hear it, my love". She told me that all the time. So, a little time after, reading the lyrics with attention and enjoying the beautiful melodies of Johnny's guitar, I finaly understanded that was a very beautiful and true love declaration, in her way, surely. So, every time I hear it, I remember her. This song makes me cry in a good way. It's a therapy for my soul - and my love confidence. Love you and miss you every day, Evy. You're my life!

That feeling of friendship, sexual ecstasy and freedom that's highlighted right before responsibility hits.
