This song has always been my favorite Smiths song. I used to think it was about a person out on their luck and just wishing for salvation but really listening to it its about a good thing finally happening, the spark of hope being lit in the person's heart hoping to fan the flames into something substantial. I first heard this in Drew Barrymore's "Never Been Kissed" movie (when I was still in 6th grade '98) and it was on the most intense part. Ah man, I can’t hear this song without crying. It reminds me so much of my tio, a lifelong smiths fan. His whole life was just a run of bad luck, cut short by a bullet in the back of his head as he was opening the door to his shop last year. This song feels like it was written for him.
