If Syd hadn't become an acid casualty, but decided he'd had enough with the Floyd and joined up with Alex Chilton after Big Star broke up, this would have been their first album.

Please don't call Syd an "acid casualty" as more was going on than that. First off, he was disgusted. But that acid moniker persists, and tho he did take copious amounts, it's a rather unkind thing to pigeonhole what happened to him as just LSD. Phrase possibly could be substituted as "he left". Bc that's what he did. ❤

What makes difference between a normal album and a great album ? There is no musician who can go to studio without talent, whatever it is, good singing, skill of playing, good composition... However, any great album is based of ambition. I discovered this album tonight and i found how ambitious it was. Fabulous.

Ironic how albums that influenced so many get heard by so few. What a gem of an album.

What makes them special dude. The ones far out of left field get relitively light traffic.

The track listing includes two songs that were not on the original album - Strange & Vegetable Man. Two of the tracks that were on the original are missing - The Queen Of Eyes & the title track! This version of Old Pervert is not the original. I agree that the album Underwater Moonlight influenced many that came after and it is a gem. However, this is not it.

@@philbowen2431 The two missing tracks appear to have been added. Just watched part of an interview with Robyn where he talks about UW having much more impact in America, mostly on musicians working in record stores/

Remains one of my favorite albums. Did not see them live, BUT! did see Robyn Hickock his first tour afterwards at 688 in Atlanta. Man with the lIghtbulb head and those songs off of his Eye album with a couple of Softboys in the band. It was fantastic. Same week as The Church and Hoodoo Gurus played at 688. We were anxious to here songs off of this masterpiece. Some of his best poetry is on Underwater Moonlight. on Insanely Jealous and I Got the Hots. The guitar reminded us of Captain Beefheart’s Magic Band.

It needed 41 years to discover this album at full blossom. I heard about the band through a friend obsessed with obscure bands like this one. Maybe I had to to listen to some of the bands songs but is wasn`t Hard Rock or Heavy Metal so it was like "Quite nice buddy but...".

Kimberly Rew still doing his thing in Cambridge to this day - the flying pig’s always a good spot to catch him ( often with his partner Lee - the ‘open legged’ bass player, with a particularly good nack of keeping the machine running ) . Still as tight on the rhythm as ever.

It's probly cuz Israel again. They shouldn't throw stones. That's neglect if you want to have a conversation about it you should be quiet anyway.
I love the tunes but I can’t help but feel Hitchcock tries too hard sometimes with the existentialist imagery ( sometimes to the point of ‘cringe’), Syd had a natural talent of using words ( that sometimes appear completely unrelated to the topic) but they expressed an emotional or feeling- ‘ my hairs on end about you’ - one can instantly relate to. Hitchcock seems to use random words threaded together in an attempt too sound ‘out there’ rather than them having any actual point- either that or he’s just not as natural a talent as Syd.who could be I suppose ? I’m not knocking it - it’s wonderful music from very talented artists ..I just think Hitchcock’s ego ( and obvious Syd obsession) sometimes detract from the music.Without it there would be no soft boys though ! I just wish he could have ‘reigned it in’ a bit - ‘a lumpy cake in a cloudy starfish supper’ - see...anyone can do that !!

I don't know to be honest I think they're both very good at nonsense writing. Its something you can't force I see your point in that respect but his writing does not sound forced to me personally. I don't know if that makes sense, does it? Lyrical nonsense is hard but when I talk believe me its easy! Cool name by the way :)
