People often fear what they dont know. I always loved robots. The computers we use are a type of robot too and we are not afraid of those anymore so... No reason to be afraid of them.

The real challenge is to create a robot that captures and responds in real time to mental state of elderly and engages in human interaction

I wish I can buy my old dad this kind of robot so while I'm working he can have a robot to talk and play music for him .

My aunt bought my grandma Google Alexa, she's delighted asking her to play songs and information. Maybe it's not 100% what you are looking for but it's a step in the right direction

I have not seen a single video of someone interacting with PARO and not smiling. Even those who are wary of him, within a few minutes are smiling and stroking his cheeks and talking to him. The creator did an amazing job creating the most loveable little fellow. Who could not like him? I haven't seen a single person who didn't love him, carees and carers alike. Everyone seems to immediately fall for his charm, I certainly have. I can see how spending time with him would make someone feel good, heck just looking at him makes me feel good. He has kind eyes, soft fur and a cute little face, makes sweet noises and likes cheek scritches? The best boy. I love PARO.

Robots for the elderly that need help: VERY cool idea! We need to do work to feel good, and helping others makes most people feel good and stay in shape.

These robots are also an excellent way to do wellness checks on people who live alone. If someone has a medical emergency or a fall, it would be good for the robot to contact the local EMS. Having worked in EMS I got a very good understanding of how valuable that is.

Adopt a pet from a shelter instead, that will help you way more because you have to take some responsibility. I would probably stay in bed forever but since I have my cats I have to get up multiple times a day to care for, feed, and play with them. I do struggle with caring for myself because of my depression but I would never neglect my little furbabies. If you need something as "chill" as Paro you might look into getting an elderly cat or elderly dog as they are often pretty relaxed and love attention and cuddles. Imagine rescuing a kitty from a lonely life in shelter and then having said kitty curled up sleeping next to you like a warm, comforting, purring pillow :) Lots of love and strength to you. Stay safe! xx

I have to agree with E S here in the comments. Rather then just prolong people's misery we should instead use our technology to improve their quality of life. In other words SENS Foundation.

Socially, they are building robots as children. They should be researching robots as parents. The relationship difference could be more effective when the robots are inevitably told that their patient refuses to take their medicine. A parent relationship could work better when the process needs to gently convince the patient to take the medicine. The best a child robot can do is notify a human nurse in this situation.

Hope your kids or somebody who is kind enough to take good care you to the point that you are too old to move. If you were end up in Nursing home, high chance is that you will have to pay tons of money and yet don't get good care.

I’m not so sure about the parent model. I think that infantilizes the person who needs care, which is already a problem in care for the elderly. The robo-child / robo-pet model frames the patient as an autonomous person who is in control but just needs a little help sometimes, as we all do.

Bowlby, Spitz, Goldfarb; research findings on 'maternal deprivation' IF, only IF robotics can fullfil; why not use them; Bowlby's main conclusions, that "the infant and young child should experience a warm, intimate, and continuous relationship with his mother (or permanent mother substitute) in which both find satisfaction and enjoyment" and that not to do so might have significant and irreversible mental health consequences, were both controversial and influential.....

I think it is something incredible positiv with all the pet robots! I have now purchased a metacat- much more prisable than paro and of course it has less "real"feeling than paro but I stil adore it😇. If Paro were a cat I will try to work double to could afford it one day 😅. I love cats but it is very difficult to have a cat when you will also travel and sometimes work at the different locations

I wonder if this technology can be used to help people with severe mental illnesses like schizophrenia. Often times even family members and doctors cannot determine deteriorating symptoms until it’s too late. With AI and daily communication and “journaling”, can a robot programmed to understand and diagnose symptoms alert the patient, family and doctors as preventative measures. Privacy would be an issue but often a doctor or even family cannot actually spend enough time communicating and observing to effectively diagnose symptoms before they escalate to the point of being obvious.

If you had any idea how willing that drivers , home care assistants , senior apartment manager's and nursing home directors are to neglect, cheat , lie to and about and steal from vulnerable seniors, you would see that the robot's might actually be more competent and trustworthy .

It's an interesting concept, but nothing replaces the human connection seniors experience with an in-home caregiver, who can provide companionship along with meeting a variety of care needs. More educational resources can be found here: montebellocares.com/blog/
