The Sonic Movie helped Sega to see that people do care about Sonic,they just needed that extra push to see that.Even though the movies shouldn't completely take over the games,I think the games and movies should work together and cross promote eachother,someone who played the game would want to watch the movie and someone who watched the movie would want to play the game. Sonic Movie 3 and Sonic X Shadow Generations are doing exactly what I want, and it's great.Speaking of Generations,I don't want to spoil anything but a screenshot of the movie seems to hint that it opens a similar way to the story of Sonic Generations and while I don't think it's intenional,it's really cool that they start a similar way so kids who would watch the movie would have a sense of familiarity when playing the game.

JosephFun edits is one of my favorite examples of taking the movie design and applying it to game Sonic. If they ever wanted to make Sonic match the movie version they should use those edits as an example

We've already started to see changes, really. Sonic having electrical energy in Sonic Frontiers, despite his previous "auras" being more focused on wind rather than electricity. I do wonder what other things from the films will influence the games... You know, it's funny. Movie Sonic rolls a lot more than Modern Sonic, so, wouldn't mind seeing that.

I hate the electricity, but it seems more like a marketing scam, cuz it has nothing to do with lore and its just kinds there for the movie kids Tho they should ditch it and go with the wind, its core to sonics character

I do think they should take inspiration from the movies with how they animate their mouths. They're reshaped and move along their faces incredibly well and it never feels awkward with one side of the muzzle not showing a mouth when someone's talking. All Sonic Team needs to do differently is stylize it for the more cartoony proportions and aesthetic the games have. (I want that cool nike smile back, man...) ALSO, GIVE THEM FANGS, PLEASE. THEY'RE CARTOON CHARACTERS, BUT THEY'RE ANIMALS TOO, DAMMIT.

We're seeing that slow movie influence with stuff like the electricity in Frontiers and the SXSG launch trailer. It's going to happen whether fans want it to or not, so being open-minded and critical about it going forward is probably the way to go. Funnily enough, I've experienced this before with another series I like called Ninjago. When LEGO started doing more movies, Ninjago was one of them and eventually the movie influenced the show by changing the character designs of the main cast to the movie designs. I didn't like the idea at first, but those designs eventually grew on me outside of a few details. Now I don't think Sega would do something as drastic as making the movie designs permanent for the games, but the small things going forward would be nice for the sake of improving stuff. Something as small as the gloves having seams in them would go a long way to make them look less like snow gloves as you've said before. Maybe decrease the size of their hands too while they're at it. Whatever they choose to do, we just need to give proper feedback so they can adjust wherever needed.

I think I would like the shadow movie model to have aspects taken & grafted onto the current 1 to improve it but I also don't want sonic havin powers tied to ELECTRICITY

And a LOT of people have had this concern about Sonic having electric powers! It didn’t bother me personally, but from other people’s criticism, I’ve found it makes a lot of sense and I am definitely on board! Let’s hope they keep Sonic wind focused!

⁠@@mysterholmes345 The way I interpreted Sonic’s power in the movies is that it’s moreso “energy” based than just electricity, and even then; Sonic’s been associated with lighting before in the games and X. It isn’t any less “natural” then him also being also associated with wind, he’s a speedster who can run At varying degrees of speed.

There are definitely aspects of movie Sonic's design that should be incorporated, but so far what they've incorporated was the lightning and I really don't like it because I'm used to Sonic not having lightning, and it's also redundant with Surge being a thing despite her not being in the games Also, I didn't think I've ever seen a single person actually like the MCU synergy thing where everything has to be like the MCU and force changes for the worse, doing that with Sonic won't end very well, it should probably stick to being DLCs like in Shadow Gens or even their own desperate game specifically based off the movies

I kinda like the lightning effect, but I do have to agree it doesn’t really fit with the games (it looks cool on shadow in shadow gens, but idk if it fits him either)

For me it really boils down to the game characterizations and overall lore. The movie versions of the characters are fine on their own, I would just really rather the game versions of the characters not take influence from them. I don't think we've gotten any indication that this is happening yet, I just hope it doesn't in the future. That said, there definitely are valuable learnings that the games can take from the movies like you said

I agree with a lot of this I find it ridiculous when people flip out over sonic having electricity come off him I think there's ways the movies can and already have started to change the franchise in good ways but I also think we should value what makes both the games and movies grate on their own separately cause you can't make everything work by merging them completely

I think so long as it's pure visual and no major changes like characterization (I.E., Sonic being a hyperactive kid) I'd be fine with it. I don't hate the way movie Sonic's depicted but I wouldn't want that to be the only Sonic. That and also going all out with the elemental powers. I'm kinda indifferent on the whole debate between it wind since he's only sort of had wind powers before, if anything I'm more concerned over Knuckles having fire powers in the Final Horizon, but so long as it just stays a visual for the boost, it's whatever

I agree about character detail. It feels like at about Unleashed, they just stopped caring about improving character detail/aesthetic, and only cared about world design/aesthetic. I think that’s partially from the “review paranoia” era, but also, it feels like Sonic Team just doesn’t know what to do. I think that’s why most current graphic focused games tend to star people and other detail friendly characters (mechs, more “American” anthros like Ratchet, etc.). And this whole “keep Sonic pure” idea… I’m sorry, but you’ve failed 30 years ago. Freedom Fighters are in Spinball. Sally is technically in American CD. Cosmo is probably referenced in Chronicles. IDW, Prime, and Movie characters are in Speed Battle next to game characters. The original vision of Sonic died decades ago, and one day, the current vision will die too. I’m a big proponent of personal canon, which is deciding what parts of the story resonate with you, and focusing on that. I don’t like that Shadow Gens established that Gerald made Biolizard before meeting Black Doom, but that doesn’t ruin the larger story for me, because it has little bearing and is easy to ignore. Fandom isn’t about liking everything, or making everything into something you like. And we’re lucky with Sonic, because so many diverse fan projects come out, I’m sure you can find at least one you like. :)

It's kind of a good idea, movies learn from the game and games learn from the movie while remaining totally different. I mean, the story of the owls and Longclaws would be awesome to adapt for a game

I really hope the films lead to the games getting a redesigns. When you look at Sonic's contemporaries in the platforming genre he is the only one whO has yet to receive a design upgrade to match Modern consoles capabilities, I love frontiers but Sonic and the cast look like plastic dolls against the realistic environment of frontiers Mario now has visible cloth textures, hair follicles and seams on his overalls in Mario Odysee, Ratchet from Ratchet and Clank basically looks like a Pixar film with detailed fur, same thing with Spyro having visible scales now and Crash Bandicoot having more detailed fur, meanwhile Sonic has been unchanged from his 2011 Sonic and the Black Rings render I wouldn't mind sonic and cast getting a makeover to look a little more detailed, I for one hope they drop the Uni-eye. The only time it's ever looked good was in the first 2 Sonic Adventure games and Sonic Unleashed, every other time it looks weird and uncanny and prevents Sonic from being an expressive character

I largely agree with you. I’m open to incorporating some design elements from Movie Sonic into the main series, particularly the models, since Sonic Team has been quite hesitant to make changes. However, altering characteristics and lore crosses the line for me.

Uh, Mardic? Paramount is locked in. They are working with Sega, right now, to work on Sonic Racing Crossworlds. This is the biggest Sonic Racing game being made by many studios to get Sonic Prime, Sonic Boom, Classic and many other characters from the Riders series and R and Fighters and every character made by IDW to be playable for the first time in Crossworlds. The ring that Shadow drove into is the exact ring you see in Shadow Generations. Keanu Reeves is now an official Shadow voice actor.

I’d love to see a variant of Longclaw, Tom & Maddie in the games. sticks has a main series variant going off of frontiers so it’s possible. Maybe tie it to an origin story for Sonic since that’s one part of the lore we haven’t explored yet. Maddie could even be the top medical professional that specializes in Mobian/Chao/Wisp/Zeti body types as she’s a Veterinarian in the movies

I love the new "ball-form" in the movie DLC. I wouldn't mind that being carried over to other games. I'd prefer it, actually.

Eh. I'll say *for the most part the movies should not influence the games.* And I'm *mostly speaking from a "due to the way THESE movies are designed" rather than generally saying "movies should never inspire games",* though for that I'd likely use the same argument. Anyways. The Sonic movies are cool but not cooler than what the games do, and there's basically nothing really to take from them 'when not scrapping the bottom of the barrel.' (The movies not being that cool is the fault to the direction and them generally not being ambitious enough. Seems most people aren't aware that *the Sonic movies' budget have been mediocre/lower than almost any other popular gaming franchise adaptation:* Detective Pikachu, Super Mario Brothers, Resident Evil, reboot Tomb Raider some of the iconic fighting games, etc. So even the movies have had little faith in themselves, and as good as the sequel Sonic Movie 2 is this series still has a ways to go until it legitimately feels like the "ultimate/must-see Sonic experience in movie form".) Sonic X (especially), Sonic OVA, and sigh... even Sonic Prime (ignoring Sonic's characterization and the general childish dialogue in it) are cool animated media adaptations of the Sonic brand, and offer things that would actually be welcomed influences on the games. Same for a lot of the various cool animated shorts. The movies aren't there yet though. Especially in terms of music, graphics, cast, story, locations, etc. Imagine actually advocating for movie influence and then the games start featuring the underwhelming/generic soundtracks, more generic settings/locations, barebone stories, and 'unreasonably' smaller cast of characters (like say Sonic Colors) like the movies. We know how Sega is. Whatever worth there MIGHT be in the movies (which I enjoy watching btw, don't get it twisted) to extrapolate and design the games around, Sega just simply won't deliver. There's more I'd like to say on that topic, but I'll leave it there and move on to the next thing. Another thing most Sonic fans aren't aware of is that *the movies have already had a wide impact on the brand/game series.* People typically point to Frontiers and the electric aura/blue eyes in it, but it goes further than that even in said game. Others also include Colors Ultimate, which came out prior to Frontiers, but the influences started even before Colors Ultimate too. I'm not going to sit here and list every single influence and their types, but just to add a few others... Before Colors Ultimate, Sonic's model was already utilizing electric aura in other non-Colors related marketing material. Sonic Origins and Colors Ultimate exist solely because of the first movie's success. Sonic Forces: Speed Battle literally had various characters from the movie series. The movies, if not by themselves, at least played a major contribution in Maria, G.U.N., and humans returning in the series. *(* I'll just say some of these are cool exceptions to the rule in why movie influence is nice, which is not a contradiction to my first paragraph. There are still a lot more risks, negatives, and trade-offs that GENERALLY make it not worth it to take inspiration from the movies. Corporations never know where to draw the line and don't know the meaning of discipline, especially over longevity. Because money overrides everything: integrity, consistency, canonicity, whatever. So again, cool exceptions/outliers don't justify the rule. *)* Guess I'll leave things there, though I wish I could have conveyed all these points in a much better way. The Mario movie has also already been influencing the games, but unlike with Sonic I don't know how deep that goes beyond Princess Peach Showtime. And that one I can't commend either, which circles back to my first point on why im generally not in favor of movie influence on games (just like with this whole stupid electric aura thing in the games, except Colors Ultimate where it was done right in being a customization). It's either case by case basis (which is almost entirely not the way the world works) or no movie influence for me.

You’re right. At this point, the movies’ influence on the games is inevitable. However, I have the (maybe extreme) stance that any crossover sets a bad precedent. The movies’ world, and especially Sonic’s character, are so different from what the games established. If eventually the games do a lot of what the movies do, many long time fans like myself will be alienated. It’s obviously too late for this now, but the movies should have been a lot closer to the games, even taking place in the same world and being fully faithful. That way, instead of making something new to bring in new fans, and changing what was established to please those new fans, we could have a bigger version of the established stuff to introduce people to what already exists. Existing fans aren’t alienated, younger kids get something cool, and there is no disconnect between different parts of the community. To me, this constant revision and trying to change the identity of the series in every new iteration shows a lack of care on Sega’s part to protect their most important IP, and a lack of understanding or confidence in what makes Sonic truly special.

@@fronkus123 worth making a video about this! I agree. A lot of my takes about Sonic are “this is the best we can do, based on where we are” Of course, ideally a lot would be different. I do believe the Sonic movies needed to do something different, in order to be successful. But that’s only because of much earlier mistakes on SEGA’s part.

@ I do agree a LITTLE with that last part. I’m still disappointed that we kept being promised that Sonic would “grow into” his game personality as the movies went on, yet he seems to keep getting farther away. Also, about the models, I actually think Prime does a decent job at using the “shoulder” from what I remember. I can’t think of any other things that the game model should take from the movies though. The eyes are a big no imo. It’s definitely possible for the connected eyes to work in 3D, but the game model doesn’t have the right shapes and doesn’t seem rigged to use them properly.

If it’s any consolation, I don’t think any effect from the movies will be very long lasting. I like to compare/contrast the Sonic movies with the Transformers movies a lot (same studio even). Outside some superficial elements of Transformers Prime, there hasn’t been that much movie influence in Transformers overall. In fact, the movies’ influence has all but imploded, leaving even the post-Bay movies trying to escape its gravitational collapse. The biggest lasting effect of the movies, is the resurgence of Bumblebee, and there sometimes being his evil policeman rival. Maaaybe the Allspark, but that name existed before the movies, as did life-giving Macguffins, so it’s really more of a remix. That said, it’s not apples to apples. Transformers is a series that prides itself on reboots and dead continuities. And Hasbro isn’t exactly doing great right now (cost of being a toy company in the 20’s). But if American TV shows weren’t that influenced by an American movie, I don’t think we should worry too much about Japanese games in the long term.

As long as the movies are their own separate thing, I don't really mind them too much. Dlc stuff? Idc. That doesn't bother me at all. The lightning aura thing...? ehhh...i'm cool with Sega toning that down...like, all the way. Sonic is wind. Not lightning. It's not a huge deal to me. But, I'm not changing my stance on that. Tails having lightning aura like in heroes? fine. Surge? I don't mind her. Keep that off of sonic though. Sega slowly leaning into incorporating movie stuff, into the games, reminds me of a VERY irritating side of them, that's been prevalent for years. Once they start hyper focusing on a new direction for the franchise, they have always felt the need to throw everything that worked before, to the way side. The movies being popular to me? Is a double edged sword. Because honestly? the films aren't sonic movies. They don't have that sonic feel overall. At least not yet. They're films, with characters that resemble sonic characters. Safe, marketable, and sanitized family films. I'm not at all interested, in the movies becoming the games. Sega would benefit in the long-term, if the movies became more like the games instead.

The movies should take from the games Not the other war around, the movies dont have that “feel” of sonic, specially the characterization would be crossing the line. I dont want this to happen Idw is the way to go with sonic media, not movies, look im hyped for movie 3 but as a separate thing The only thing they should take is the realistic environment, but NOT the lighting sonic has The movie models remind me of dreamcast sonic, aka games shouldn’t take of those models, but from where the movie models took, which i guess its the older games Thats it, as long as they dont touch the characters, the style and vibe, and specifically that stupid lightning aura Tbf they took it off, sonic has normal boost like shadow in that shadow gens cutscene, and i hope it stays that way However i did hate the final shadow gens trailer for having modern And Classic sonic have lightning They butchered the pure sonic now, classic no longer wind, their BOTH suppsed to be free like the wind, not emotionally impulsive like lightning

Yeah, they're ruining Sonic. It's sad because people are ok with it. I'm starting to realize that they aren't real Sonic fans. They don't know Sonic. Sonic's speed is supposed to be realistic, not a carbon copy of The Flash. That's why he is in tune with the wind. Nature. It's sad, really. In 'Sonic Frontiers', the electricity was fine because I perceived it as a cyberspace effect. The electricity hasn't shown on him for anything after, like Sonic Superstars, Sonic Dream Team, Sonic Rumble, or Sonic x Shadow Generations, gameplay wise. However, it has shown in promotional material. That leads me to think that it's a false representation of video game Sonic, meant to get movie fans interested. It better be for their sake. Edit: I just remembered that they did have electricity on Sonic for that golf game, but I think that's more on the promotional side than being part of the mainline series.

I can't agree with what you're saying, i can agree with you that sonic films should stick to the games, but the games take a long time, like 3 hours and more to make it into a movie. If you don't like the movies, then you don't have to watch it, isn't that simple? 🤷🏾‍♂️

@ oh! So you feel the movie and games should stay VERY different from each other, right? I only want ideas from movies that help the games improve in their separate way! I don’t want the games identity to get at all replaced with the movies style. I just believe there is room for improvement in the games, especially in how they present themselves, and it’s only natural that at the Hollywood level, there’s something to learn about visual presentation.

I for SURE do not want Sonic to lose his identity. But there's no denying there are improvements in animation quality needed for the games, and at the Hollywood level, there's things to learn about how to better serve that unique identity!

@Mardiculous I agree, sure, but better animation or models aren't only possible through the movies' influence. That should be a standard, not a condition of influence. Anyway, they can redesign and improve animation all they want, even if they uneccesarily use the movies as reference, I don't care about that. All I care about is them not misrepresenting the fundamental existence of the original Sonic the Hedgehog. Something to note that most fans don't understand is that Sonic's speed has been since the beginning (and still now to some extent) displayed as "realistic" speed. Not the unrealistic, unnatural speed that is like The Flash, or now, Movie Sonic (they can change directions instantly without trouble, stop on a dime...basically physics do not apply to their speed). That's why he has to drift or why he can't stop on a dime. He's as natural as the air. That's why the wind is an important quality to him. Adding this electricity is what is ruining his identity. It completely contradicts his character. The reason I like him. That's all that matters to me. For them not to sacrifice who the original Sonic is for the sake of money. It seems most "fans" don't realize this, though. I hope you touch on this in the future. I would like to see what you think in a video.
