I personally think Josephfunedits Sonic feels more like the actual Sonic, but I never complain about it cause we have to remember this is Paramount's own universe of Sonic, it's not supposed to be a movie with the actual Sonic from the games, it's their own version

I really like movie Sonic as a character. Game Sonic is more of a loner, and he’s more about the adventures, thrills and the adrenaline, of course he still cares about his friends, but he’s fine being lonely. Movie Sonic is a different interpretation of him. A Sonic that had a tragic past, and learned that revealing his powers to the world is a bad thing. As he stayed hidden, what he yearned for the most was the things he couldn’t have, friends and family, also he is most knowledgeable about the outside world because of media and Pop Culture, justifying his constant references. I like both of them as different versions of Sonic, they’re different, but they still feel like the same character to me.

PHENOMENAL interpretation and stance. It is undeniable that when a character's actor changes, *they* themself change. It is why opinions are so strong between folks on the different VAs to begin with. The vibe that Jason gives to his Sonic is not the same as Roger's and the vibe that Roger gives is not the same as Ryan's and none of those guys are even the original! The difference is too much as Sega never really practiced care in how the character sounds up until it feels like recently lol. And even with folks saying the previous ones sound, at least, close enough in registry (I feel this way too). It is undeniable that even back then the changes were usually questioned due to an obvious lack of... hyperfocus in consideration haha I'd argue many that claim that Movie Sonic is this "horrible abomination" and misinterpretation often site a version of Sonic that was never prevalent in inception until the 2000s. This stance in my opinion lacks a bit of nuance and usually is carried by hindsight in the *now*, which is important bc there's so much about 90s Genesis era Sonic that is in engrained in pop culture... which I feel movie Sonic relishes in AND pulls from the MOST Sure there's merit in the box art phrases and simple handwaving between sprites from Sonic 1 to 3&K, but would it be fair to say that *that* specific interpretation is even remotely close to what Maekawa gave us in the 2000s? (A guy who has admitted didn't pull a lot from the classics for his writing to begin with?) or that interpretations the precede that are wrong? TLDR; Movie Sonic is different, but when we get to a point where "different to what" is such a different answer to so many ppl even officially, is that even really something to truly hold against it? i think at the end of the day Maekawa's sonic still carries the essence of what the original sonic characterization. All the fundamental traits are still present from the 90s to 2000s. It's an evolution of the character. Sonic was still more of this force of nature that acted on his instincts. he still preferred his space and enjoyed taking naps. i can't really say Movie Sonic shares any traits that isn't surface level to classic or modern sonic. Even though it isn't canon, the ova gave an insight on what sega was going for at the time.

DIC Sonic is the most flawed. He's vain, petty, and insecure. Movie Sonic is a dorky kid with a big heart. X Sonic is aloof, confident, vengeful. Boom Sonic is the veteran who's unimpressed. All Sonics are great.

i feel the same. sonic just seems to be getting more annoying as the movies go on. every new 'version' of him we see hardly has anything in common with the original character other than appearance. it's the same issue with prime, too. i don't understand why they have to reinvent the wheel every single time? no other franchise seems to be this inconsistent overall

Sonic as a character is inconsistent in the games as well. You have a more serious Sonic like the one in Unleashed or Frontiers, a more goofy Sonic like the one in Generations and Lost World, a mix in the Adventures, etc. And Sonic media as a whole had completely different interpetations on the character. AOSTH, satAM, Underground, X, 4!kids X, Boom, Prime, Sonic 1999, etc. And let's not get into what the Archie comics did. In general I don't mind it. The core traits are there: A fast boi who's gotta go fast. At least he's not Prime Sonic, god that little shit deserved everything that happened to him.

I think with the movie version of Sonic, there is a reason for his portrayal and characterization in movie 1 and 2. While I think in movie 3, we'll see him acting mostly the same, I'm hoping that he'll start to grow and mature further, especially considering what he is going to learn in regards to Shadow, and what the military did.

I will admit, when the Sonic Movie was announced I just thought it was just gonna be another cash grab type of movie espically with the first rough draft. But I'm happy to see that this series is a huge success. I love the voice cast for the movies, I love how the characters are in the series, and I'm just as excited for the 3RD Flim.

If you inserted the real Sonic in the first movie, he would be completely content with his life. He can go wherever he wants and not care about hiding his existence. He wouldn't spy on the human characters because he doesn't really care who knows him or not. "I'm Sonic. Sonic the Hedgehog. Deal with it." Movie Sonic focuses solely on family which is completely different from what Sonic really cares about and that is his adventures and freedom.

My only fear with Movie Sonic is that his version of the character might start to influence game Sonic due to the success of the movies. Granted, there hasn't been any sign of this in the personality department so far, really just visuals with the "blue electricity" effect being used a bit in the game media lately, plus there's a more concerted effort to make the lore and characters of the games more consistent now, which changing Sonic's character would actively go against, but I can't quite shake the worry even if it is a bit irrational. Regardless, I'm okay with Movie Sonic as a character as long as he continues to exist as his own separate thing and Game Sonic stays how he is.

It's finally clicked with me more why I don't fully enjoy Movie Sonic's character. He doesn't feel as cool as he should be, and this also applies to Prime Sonic as well ngl. Your point about the different voice actors does make his differences clearer, however. When I hear Jason's Sonic for example, I see a Sonic that is confident, snarky, and down to earth. Juxtaposed with Ben's Sonic where I see a more youthful and energetic character. Those traits aren't necessarily bad, but him being wittier and more immature really throws me off. I still enjoy that he's a thrill seeker, but it just doesn't hit the same as game Sonic. Now granted, Movie Sonic IS a younger version of the character, so it makes sense why he acts the way he does. Ben's performance is what creates that youthful Sonic, and for the movies it does work. We're seeing a Sonic that has more character development than what he normally gets. When he's in action I think he looks cool, just not every time he speaks. He's going to grow as these movies progress, so maybe he'll become something like game Sonic but still stands out in his own way. That alone is the biggest takeaway. Different interpretations of this character should stand out on their own to create an identity for the media they come from. I just personally wish Sonic's core traits and life philosophy (not against them exploring a Sonic who wants to be seen as a hero though) were pushed more so there is still a degree of consistency, but just enough room for creative liberties. Side note: It wasn't until recently where I finally understood how it felt to be thrown off by a character's new voice when I heard Mephiles speak in Shadow Generations. While I still prefer Dan Green, Robbie Daymond's performance has grown on me and does a solid job for the version of the character.

I think Movie Sonic works well for the kids and just anyone who knows nothing about game Sonic. The movies are as good as the games when it comes to giving positive messages and themes. This new Sonic is relatable with struggles that a kid may face growing up; so he works better as a film protagonist and that helps immerse young people or non Sonic fans more into this. I haven’t watched the video yet, cause it’s 1AM as I’m typing this, but I’m excited too (after I get sleep) lol

Movie Sonic isn’t my favorite, but I like him just fine as his own thing. I mean I got my preference, but I’m also used to there being various interpretations of the same character. To me Sonic is one part attitude and edge, another parts sincere and caring that balance each other out. Movie Sonic for many, can feel like his edges were sanded down. He can go hard when he locks-in, but it shouldn’t be a rare occurrence.

The SatAM comparison is actually really apt. Both can get pretty grating in a vacuum, but they also play really well off of other, stricter, more serious characters (Antoine, Sally, Knuckles, Shadow). It’s definitely a more American approach than the games and Japanese fiction, where Sonic’s more, er, “perfect”. Though I wish they’d portray Sonic (and Knuckles) less as literal children. Still kinda cringe at the end of movie 2 when Sonic calls Tom dad.

I love the design of Movie Sonic, especially in one of his latest renders, where he has better facial expressions. However, in terms of characterization, I feel that Movie Sonic is the only character in this universe who doesn't feel mature enough when you compare him to his game counterpart. I know that Sonic is canonically a teenager, but compared to other portrayals, he seems quite immature. While Sonic is technically a teen, he often behaves more like an adult in the games (although Roger's portrayal usually sounds too old for Sonic, in my opinion). Ryan and Jason captured the perfect balance, which is why they remain my favorite portrayals of Sonic.

In terms of design, love it and not a dumpster fire like the first design. Story wise, the first was a little bumpy but a good build up to the second which that was a good build up to the third. But for sonic himself, I will say he isnt the worst sonic as he still needs time to mature which he is thanks to sonic 3. I'm sure later films it will develop him more. But he is a fine version of sonic and probably top 3 for how cool he is while mixing in serious and funny stuff. Plus, Ben Schwartz does a good job with the character.

I can live with Movie Sonic being a one-off interpretation (or for a trilogy). But I don't like him. I like Movie Tails, Shadow & Knux. But they didn't understand the core of Sonic. I liked that they made him lonely in movie 1 so they could give him an arc, but Sonic at his core should be independent, free and nomadic. I was baffled at the end of movie two, i thought that movie would end at the main trio living together and without the Wachowski.

Possibly controvserial: i think if you like the movie version of sonic and hated the old design then you probably deserve the old one because they come from the same place. Its very much a get $$$ quick scheme that goes for the easiest things to make audiences Pathos activate without having to actually do anything to earn it. Its honestly crazy thinking about how many times Disney has done this right (especially with Stitch) and that even Hop is way more in the ballpark for personality than Sonic. Good thing i dont make videos because i find more reasons not to like it every day.

I love the Sonic Movie universe but is it perfect? no. It's what I would want for a movie interpretation of the world being realistic with humans instead of fully animated with no humans. Would I like an animated movie with stylized humans which resemble Sonic Unleashed (Pixar) or Shadow Generations (anime)? Yeah but I like the way it is right now because it works really well. I view Sonic like a Marvel or DC character so having humans in the same world makes everything feel complete, it feels empty without them.

I cant agree with the point that different actors and interpretations can change a character so drastically. It can depending on certain circumstances but there are so many characters who still feel the same in different versions. Batman is the biggest example I can think of. Theres some versions that do stray from the original vision but most tend to still feel like Batman. Sonic has had a rough time actually adapting the true version of the character in side media, except Sonic X. Which was the only one that had Sonic Team involved with its production. Its a shame that things like these movies is changing the perception of the character from what it once was. It also irks me how whenever Shadow is involved they really dedicate themselves to getting HIM right no matter the circumstances but Sonics character is just disregarded. I understand your points about being used to different versions of Sonic but I think we need that true version faithfully adapted for once.

and they don’t claim to be canon. Prime and the comics do. I think the reason the movies get targeted by fans so much is less becasue they feel they, and their fans, “deserve it”, and more so a fear of the habits company’s have to listen to Hollywood choices and plaster it all over things. Also, Sega spent a large portion of its history ashamed of Sonic, trying to change it into something else. I get the fear, but it’s not the movies fault, and the fans of it deserve to be treated better.

I enjoy movie sonic tho he could stand to do less jokes cus they get really cringey & stupid. I think the main issue is sega never make supplemental material that's for sonic fans. The movies, Prime, even IDW none of those R for sonic fans. Imo Movie Sonic is a really good portrayal of a younger version of Sonic, as he hasn’t been through the dozens and dozens of life-threatening situations as the Sonic we know now. there's a bigger discussion of how every generation has their own Sonic and this Sonic, movie Sonic, will be the one for the next generation and those who don't play the games but come to watch the movies. The cultural impact of this movie Sonic shouldn't be underestimated. Hopefully the fanbase comes to learn this fact. Ok here we go MOVIE SONIC IS MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE SONIC for a lot of reasons but long story short 1 I like how they played this sonic from a different angle he can't be the sonic that never wants to stay in one place when the first movie is about him wanting friends 2 sonics personally is exactly what I want him to be I love playing more into the fact that he's a teen who's witty and charismatic but also has a lot of heart and cares about his friends more than anything I love how this version of sonic has a lot of wiggle room to grow and have arcs 3 I love his voice I already loved ben schwartz he's my favorite voice actor and before him I really wasn't in to game sonic with forces I wasn't a fan of how sonic was being characterized and it was hard to care but movie sonic and especially Ben's performance made me not only love sonics character again but it made me find new things I love about him I love how he loves adventure but is perfectly happy to have a home in Greenhills I love his relationship with tails and knuckles going from sonic being a hyperactive kid to becoming a big brother for tails and gaining an older brother in knuckles I love his relationship with Tom and maddie and that he has a dog and a race car bed all that stuff kinda feels like archie in that way and about all else I love how they write sonic in these movies he can go from funny to cute to cool to heart felt I don't mind the pop culture references because that was sonics way of enteracting with the outside world I don't want game sonic to become movie sonic or vise versa I love movie sonic because he is different from the games and that he can coexist with other sonics having different traits from them but also similar ones sonic is subjective I get it but I feel like movie sonic is underrated in a lot of people's eyes and I think people should give him more credit 💙

Movie Sonic isn't my favorite Sonic (because I don't really *have* one), but I'm definitely fond of him. But even though we haven't really seen him at the best he could be, Movie 3 seems to be taking him in the right direction; he looks and sounds a lot more serious in it according to the trailers, and I think by Movie 4 or even Act 3 of the third movie, we'll see the true potential in Ben's version of the character. I also think that if they could find a way, they could take the franchise in a new direction, like finally exploring the more Sonic-esqe worlds, and probably replacing Jim Carrey Eggman, not to say he's a problem, he's a huge highlight of these films, but he's gotta retire at some point.. plus think the fans are just put off by seeing Sonic on Earth now. And speaking of the fans, I would also like to say that even though the franchise may do things we aren't too in for, we have to remind ourselves that these movies are gonna do their own thing. That's okay. Like I swear some people really just want Movie 3 to be Sonic Adventure 2: The Movie, with no new ground being broken. These movie will be different and that's fine, you don’t even have to like them anyway, they're just gonna do what they think they should do and something about money, I guess. While movie sonic isn’t my favorite sonic, I like him quite a bit. I’m not here to defend every joke that comes out of his mouth, or even say he can’t be annoying at times, but he’s still enjoyable. 1 thing I love that outside Sonic medias do (comics, movies, shows etc) is let Sonic be more emotional. I could point to the power outage he causes in the first on but a better example in movie 2. Movie Sonic pushes tails to come with him, knowing he isn’t a field guy, only for him to end up getting hurt. This causes him to feel bad, wanting to do everything he can to stop robotnik and knuckles alone. While this isn’t the best way to go about it, seeing him take responsibility is, well nice. Again, while this Sonic is very quippy and annoying at times, this is a younger version of Sonic, almost like a mix between classic and modern. Not saying that it justifies his actions all the time, but it’s something to keep in mind. Yes he’s not as cool and natural with the quips as the game Sonic we have in our minds, but with future movies, I’d say it’s not impossible that we get there some day.

I hate to say it, but I find Movie Sonic extremely annoying. He’ll literally make a joke or reference something every time something happens unless he’s about to literally die. Like in the newest movie 3 trailer I groaned when the moon blew up and he says “someone better call google maps” Like please act like Sonic and not like a comedian.

Sonic's mouth doesn't match what he "says" at all in that moment. It's very obviously dialogue replacement. I highly doubt those words and the scene prior are actually connected in the movie, especially since the joke doesn't even make sense in that context. What does the moon have to do with google maps? This is just how movie trailers work.

As mentioned on the YMMV page of sonic movie 2 on tv tropes, when knuckles is about to get CRUSHED by a pillar and drown, sonic seems exasperated instead of scared as he says “water again? Come on!”

@Andythesonicfan I mean he did live by himself for 10 years and read lots of media/ secretly watched movies at tomd house so ofcourse when he goes out to the real world he's gonna notice things and refrence them 🤦‍♂️ i get why it could be annoying but I let it pass imo also we need jokes for the adults and movie sonic is growing up and becoming more mature but still a funny relaxed guy who can be serious when he needs to protect the ones he love. I love movie sonic for that

I hate the movie series besides eggman. Everyone is just dumbed down to nick jr. Status and it sucks that my once cool characters are so cheesy and lame. Sonic doesn't need a little human family to call to help him fight his enemies. I'm glad they make sega money but go walk down the Walmart toy aisle and tell me those movie sonic plushies don't look like little furry nightmares
