I have one on order now that they are down to $20 USD. I've been wanting to try modding for some time now, but was always afraid I'd screw something up. With the classic, I'm not worried about frying it. Now that it can run other systems via emulation, and the current price point, it was too good to pass up.

Happy to see Silent Hill was the first added game footage on here! That was the first game I added to the console. I've had fun messing with my PlayStation Classic so far but the manual process of adding games can certainly be refined in the near future. Current methods are decent if you don't mind digging into the custom.db file and you're only adding a handful of games, but a whole library is a bit out of the question, something like a RetroPie setup would be more optimal for a whole library of your favorite PS1 games. Here's to hoping a Hakchi type solution comes out here soon!

My favorite thing about my S'mini is screwing around with it, adding folders, custom art, and getting everything neat and organized. This video is great news, but I'm personally going to hold my horses until things are a bit less clunky.

This became one of my favorite gaming channels very quickly. Great videos, great info. I bought a PS Classic for 3 main reasons; 1) It comes with Intelligent Qube, which I don't own on disc and the North American version goes for around $50 for a disc-only copy, more for a complete one. 2) I was able to buy one from Amazon when it came out at the MSRP - no mark-up or hassles, no pre-ordering, etc. 3) I was pretty sure it'd be hacked, but I never expected it to happen this quickly! At this point I hope they put out another one with the Dual-Shock controllers and different games in a year or so, and hopefully do a better job of it working well right out of the box.

The Pi has the faster cpu, but the PlayStation Classic actually has the gpu to run CRT shaders competently. Will probably stick with my x86 Atom tablet connected to tv.

I still don't understand how Sony screwed this up so badly. I can't really complain about the choice of games but the fact they were all set as PAL region blows my mind. There must be a reason why they did that, but really why?

Because PAL games use less resources and as such are less likely to drop frames if the emulator can't keep up. That's literally it. They must have found those games to be far less enjoyable on their NTSC counterparts because of the constant performance drops, and thus they circumvented the problem by using the PAL games.

@@zummone maybe in theory, but in practice this system seems able to force PAL games to 60Hz and run them better than in 50Hz, especially when disabling frameskipping. The difference with Tekken 3 is incredible.

I don't agree at all with sony doing this, paying £100 for a free emulator is not a great idea. If you want something that bad then use pcsx emulator on a good tablet and purchase a good wireless joypad, its alot better than this and cheaper. Awesome vid as always love the channel.

The deal-maker for me would be the ability to put 100+ games on it with on-board storage. I don't want to use a USB drive, navigate a text menu, and not be able to have a controller in port #2. But cheers to the hackers for the progress they've made. Much appreciate.

I got one not TOO long after launch. The price has dropped to $40 and I was about to snag one soon but then Best Buy had them on sale for $20. I immediately ordered and hacked it. Oh, and it's funny you mentioned hotel because I immediately after picking it up went on vacation so I first modded and played it in a hotel on a family vacation, haha.

Great video! Now that we can play additional games, hopefully we can add them to the interface as well and have a giant carousel full of games. There is also (what looks like) an internal usb soldering point that we can hopefully use to mount a drive into and keep both controller ports open.

Great coverage of the situation once again! Also thanks for giving a quick look at both methods and their pros and cons on how to get other games working on this thing. I have to admit however that my hype for the PSC went gone quickly too after hearing what the system offers and that even the SNES Classic can handle PS1 emulation better than the PSC in some cases using the same emulator. So I picked up another Raspberry Pi and did a RetroPie setup again. Especially now that Valve released their SteamLink software as a Debian package which allows me to have a all-in-one box for my SNES Classic, PSC, SteamLink and DVR goodness, I'm very happy with the results :D Granted though, I need to find a way to rip my PS1 games somehow.

My thought? Why not go with a gameboy zero, as it's portable, and there has been quite a bit of development effort put into it. (What honestly sold me on this one is this build also wired up a cartridge + cartridge slot as the point of interface for the SD card)?

The appeal of a product like this is being simple and plug-and-play. But if you have to hack it to this extent, editing shell-scripts and whatnot, and then seek out and copy your own ROMs to even get any worthwhile games there, it means the manufacturer has not done their job, and you could have just as well gotten a Raspberry Pi 3 or the like, and a free emulator. In fact I would say cancelling the preorder is the right decision, they should get the message that they need to do better, that we won't pay $100 for a half-assed job. A lot of the NES/SNES Classic's appeal is that in part you pay for licensed, legal copies of some of the best games for the system. You don't even have to hack those to have good stuff to play. This is not the case with this one. You get just "some games", not any of the hits.

4:06 that is not a good example because the PAL version optimized that intro to run at the same speed on both versions, by switching to 60Hz you're actually making it run faster than it's supposed to (as evidenced by the music being out of sync with the camera cuts). Also, the actual reason they included PAL games was because they are far easier on the emulation, while NTSC would undoubtedly chug more. I don't think PCSX-reARMed is a bad emulator (being open source doesn't mean much of anything because Mednafen is arguably the best PS1 emulator ever and it's also open source), but it's not what I would use in a commercial release: there are too many broken, unmaintained cogs in the internal machinery which have accumulated over the years preventing certain games from keeping full speed, some caused by game-specific hacks. I hate to say it because I love PCSX-R and its PGXP fork, but that's just how it works, it's not a very optimized emulator overall.

My biggest complaint about this thing isn't the library, PAL isos or the PCSX. A mini remake can't capture the nostalgia of the disc drive grinding away or the wait for the SCEA screen to show up.

So I finally got my PS Classic almost a week ago by now ($40 at Target), and the main reason why I did was for the controllers (but, also because I wanted the actual unit.... for me, for now, it's still a nice display piece, looks good on a shelf etc., I also like the box and packaging). My brother recently gave me a raspberry pi and has been helping me configure it, but.... once I discovered how well PS1 emulation is on it, I've been ripping my own collection of game discs and having a blast with it! Like I said, the controllers are great with the pi (I do have an Xbox One controller, so if I should ever want analog controls, I could probably set that up). Although, I already need to buy a larger micro SD card, already filled up the one my pi has with PS1 games, but even so - just now found this video tonight, and this is all amazing. I might look into some of this at some point, but for now, even just having it for display and the controllers is good enough for me.

Finally someone who knows what is talking about!!! A lot of people talking shit about the emulator but is a better choice than any of Sony's own emulators. Only the price isn't the best, and the lack of Dualshock controllers. By the way, I wonder if the original DS controller works with an USB adapter, like it works on the PS3...

I tried with a dualshock 4 wired in and it will recognize only 1 analog stick and all other buttons are useless. There is hope for an original dualshock controller with a usb adapter but I don't have one of those to try the theory out. Also tried using the controller with steam just for fun. i notice there is an issue with the d pad. the buttons for some reason only register as two buttons instead of four.

A better choice than any of Sony's emulators? Are you for real? The semi-native PSP/Vita and the fully software PS3 implementations run circles on PCSX reARMed, and were made with proper knowledge of the hardware, while the one on the PS Classic is a reverse-engineered unmaintained mess for people who just want to play games on their phone, and its plugin-dependency only makes things even less predictable.

The fact that it is possible to change the settings and load games off a USB drive makes it nicer. There's a market for it no doubt. Collectors for example. Even though I initially said I wasn't going to get one I actually might still get one to 'complete' the C64Mini, Snes en Nes mini set I already own and hack it or just play it. On Twitter, the RetroArch account has tweeted an little video of the RetroArch interface running on it ! Still no gameplay but it's a start for further hacking.

I didn't get a PlayStation Classic on launch day but I did buy one eventually for $30 USD. I used BleemSync but there's also Project ERIS. One thing I remember hearing was that there were other games in the source code that were probably planned to be part of the collection and those games were games that are definitely better than the games on it already.

I would like to have seen Sony do different volumes. Vol 1 - top 20 games of 1995. Vol 2 - top 20 games of 1996 and so on. The way they actually did it left too many games out.

MVG finally steps up to the PS Classic, good to see another unbiased review, really good coverage of this console, I love the PS classic, it's a Playstation Emulator in an official Playstation case along with a pair of Official USB OG controllers that cannot be got elsewhere, sure the emulator has it's issues but we all know the modding community will polish this thing up soon enough, I like the way they left the ability to access the emulator menu with a KB, I do not believe that was by accident, Sony are well aware of what some people were going to do to this and now news is out it's wide open for adding games easily it'll sell by the truckload, in the meantime the community will make this the best of all the mini consoles imho, so glad to see another reviewer that's not riding the hate train. Already got mine running from USB, and yes I know I can get a Pi or any of the other tinker boards, but if I want to emulate on anything worthwhile for all Retro emulation along with older and newer PC games, I use a PC with Launchbox/Big Box which takes a massive dump on the Pi, good luck playing Breath of the Wild on a Pi. Only 3 channels to watch when it comes to retro games and console modding, MVG, ETA Prime and last but definitely not least it's Mr Mario, 3 way live stream discussing the PS Classic please, go on make it happen :-D

Yes, but you well need a powered USB hub but it's not necessary as we don't need the USB keyboard anymore and i doubt any multi tap games are going to work properly on this thing

One thing that I'm curious about (and I'm sort of busy right now to check mine, otherwise I might check it in a day or two), the PS Classic DID come with instructions.... did ANYONE even bother to look through them all, or once they had the PS Classic, just ignore the instructions and plug the unit in and try it? I'm curious if Sony even mentions somewhere in the instructions anything about the menu that comes up when you use a USB keyboard....

That's also a major complaint made by many. Why in the world the PCSX menu isn't available for browsing from the main menu? Maybe the developers didn't want customers to tamper with the settings? Or maybe they thought customers were too stupid? And what did developers actually develop in the first place? I wouldn't buy this for product development laziness alone. But since it is easily hackable, maybe even another emulator can be installed and used? "Edit the lolhack.sh with any text editor". I would strongly discourage this, since carriage returns (CR) and line feeds (LF) are treated differently between operating systems. I would go for Notepad++ and save text files with LF alone with the specific ".sh" file type. LF+CR can be changed into LF alone by right clicking the lower right of the status bar, where it says "Windows (CR LF)", and selecting "UNIX (LF)". This way you are sure there are no compatibility issues.

Hoping we get a hack that lets us play any game we want as well as have two controllers hooked up. Really wanna play games like Street Fighter Alpha 3, Darkstalkers 3, Rival Schools, Soul Blade, Samurai Shodown IV Special, etc., but wouldn't be a point if one of the two USB slots have to go to a thumb drive.

in less then a week it was modded to get any psOne IUmage to load... not to shabby imo SIDE NOTE it will load direct Image files (IE BIN, ISO, IMG, ISO, and PBP files with out needing the extra files (CUE ect)

When I first heard of this I thought it would make a christmas gift for my sister since we both grew up playing PS1 games however I think the price is to high considering what you get for the money. The current cost of it in Sweden ranges from 126 Euro (143 USD) up to 146 Euro (165 USD)

Have to correct you here. PAL games on Playstation 1 ran at 25 frames per second, NTSC games ran at 29.97 frame per second. While PAL has a slightly lower frame rate, the number of lines is much higher, 625 for pal vs 525 for NTSC. For HDMI you simply send the frames twice, so the difference in performance for SD over HDMI is the same. With a bit more processing power you could convert each field in to a frame, as there will be field differences, but I am not sure if this little ARM box has the grunt for that.

@@niceified Almost all PS1 games ran at 50 or 60fps. Very few were using interlacing (Tekken 3, etc)

@@niceified They did, but I believe they were interlaced before your TV (as it was basically a crappy UHF output) if you used Scart then I am not sure what you got, as progressive scan was not always supported back in the day.

Is there a way to dump your roms on the mini? Or do usb splitter work? Since multiplayer games won't work with a usb drive attached.

I waited for it to get cheaper and cheaper until in feb of '19 it was 59.99$ in walmart but 39.99$ on their website for purchase so i asked if they would price match it to their own online price listing and they did, so to be honest the fact that I got it for 40$ with Persona and other games as a second thought i think it was worth what I paid

3:40 Compares the PAL and NTSC versions of Tekken 3's EMBU. Me: The PAL mode looks fine, it's how I remember it whereas the NTSC one looks like it's going way too quick. I live and grew up in a PAL region

It's a subjective thing in all honesty, some people like the minor choppiness, others don't. Honestly I could probably play either version.
