At 18 psi you'll be operating outside the efficiency range of the HT18. Might be fun to watch on the gauge, but do the right thing and dial it back down, 15psi is perfect. At 15 psi and approx. 105rwkw and 400Nm you will have a very reliable and capable rig. If you find this power level isn't enough (especially if heavy towing or if you add a heap of weight to the ute), then in the meantime save up for your choice of turbo and intercooler. Yes you could run 38 psi (or more) but expect to lose a few head gaskets along the way. You've found a clean TD, if it was mine I'd favour capability mods over power every day. Even with UFI special 200+rwkw and 700Nm they aren't fast cars, but left relatively stock they will always get you out there and back.

100% 18psi is way too much for the HT18. Exhaust manifold pressure will be through the roof. 15psi is not factory for the HT18 so it's already been tuned. More psi does not equal more power, air density and fuel does. You would make more power with a better intercooler and 15psi than 18psi and factory intercooler. They need to watch some videos by gale banks and educate themselves before ruining their mates new car, these guys have the mechanical knowledge of a first year at best.

Why would you cowboy tune a clean td42 🤦🏼‍♂️ getting it tuned properly on a dyno isn’t that expensive and is worth every dollar if it means you don’t blow up the engine..

I agree especially after a clown backyard tuned mine, egt's stuffed, fuel stuffed, sooty. Just get the turbo and intercooler you want to keep long term and get a dyno 'safe' tune . Not for max power! Us TD42 owners have got to preserve these classics and not have them all end up on the scrap heap like ive seen other classic cars end up over the years from backyard mistakes and poor driving habits.

You were saying the difference between an NA blacktop and a factory turbo black top? Strength wise, I’ve always been under the understanding the silver tops were the strongest? Not turbocharged from factory, but bloody strong internals. Haha.. maybe a debatable topic!!

Thom Janson silver top is the original forklift motor then they went to a na blacktop and lightened the internals so it would rev better na that’s why na blacks don’t handle boost aswell then there is the factory turbo blacktop which people say are the “better” td42 as they have the turbo internals to handle boost better

@@noahmuller1813 hmm ok. I’ve always read differently. Ive read they were in buses, trucks and the forklifts. The silvers had heavy but stronger internals out of all the TD42’s. Then the blacktops had lighter internals, for fasting revving and easier boosting. Great engine also, but not as strong as the silver tops.

Thom Janson believe what you want but a FACTORY TURBO black top not a NA black top will hold more boost then a silver top the NA blacktop and FACTORY TURBO blacktop are a complete different internally there is also a the TD6 td42 these were the the last of the td42 and and came with the factory intercooler

Internals dont change that much at all, they can all take close to the same abuse

ABH diesel performance wrong. The silver tops have 28mm gudgeon pins but stronger piston crowns so can handle big boost. the NA blacktops have 30mm gudgeon pins but they lightened the piston crowns for automotive use so cannot handle much boost. Then they made the factory turbo blacktop which has both the 30mm gudgeon pins and the stronger piston crown.

Not too smart winding up the boost if there isn't enough fuel to compensate and it leans out and something goes bust or too much fuel.. Hence best to only fiddle with that once/while you get it tuned so you can check everything at once. Or you can cowboy tune it and effectively put your 19.5k all on black and see how you go.

You can run up to 50psi with a non turbo motor on stock fuel if u can spin turbos up that much, diesels blow up from rich not lean
