Carmine Sr knew that Tony reached out to Carmine Jr after his son started sounding like he was siding with Tony. Getting double teamed by Johnny and his son wouldn’t do, so he made that comment to get his son back on his side and edge out Johnny. Pure cunning, and the reason he lived so long as boss of a major family (not sure which family the Lupertazzi’s are supposed to model...Gambino or Luchesse)

it's less about tony than that, i think. tony is one problem in a list of problems carmine sr has. what he's doing here is playing carmine jr and johnny sac against each other so they can't push him into a corner in an area where they both have better relationships than him. by splitting his enemies, carmine sr ensures that the beef will continue and he will eventually take some sort of piece of tony's HUD business without upsetting the natural order of things in NY.

Carmine Sr. didn't respect him. The comment referred to what Little Carmine could always be found doing. Poolside in Miami. Some here theorize it was to get Little Carmine on his side. But I think it was reverse. Little Carmine diminishing Tony's aura while playing to his old man's ego by expressing WHY he felt he was a poseur, adding Tony hadn't been boss of a family for long while already knowing his father viewed them as a "glorified crew." Then reaffirming what Carmine had already expressed. That they came off entirely too much as friends and not business associates. It was Carmine who lost it and smashed the golf club while Little Carmine was calm and collected. Which is why John gave Little Carmine the manson lamps and not Lupertazzi Sr. It was Little Carmine who played the old man and not the other way around. Because, eventually, the Lupertazzis & Sopranos worked it out. And Carmine credited his son (and not Johnny) as being a big help. It was about Little Carmine's "cold war" with John Sacrimoni. John had Carmine leaning to make a deal with Tony. Little Carmine botched it. Only to help resolve it and get the credit or favor from his father. In future episodes we see Little Carmine & John's true colors for each other come out.

I don't know if it's proof he's a master manipulator, might be more of a spontaneous response to Carmine basically saying he'd rather have Tony as a son. The eye movement and facial expression of John Sacramoni tells you the whole story of what he thinks of Carmine Jr as he belittles Tony Soprano. That's why nobody respected Carmine Jr. He showed his insecurities and weaknesses with his childish behaviour, yet to himself he thought he was the cleverest wiseguy on the block. His father asking him if he put on his sunscreen goes over alot of people's head. Some people may see it as a joke but really it reflects how his father views him. Still as a child. When he talks about Tony being a son it is because of the leadership qualities of Tony that Carmine Jr didn't posess. This is why as His father said it he looked down and got upset. He felt inferior and proceeded to talk bad about Tony to boost his confidence and gain his father's respect , which was important to Carmine Jr. This scene shows us one of the best reasons why Carmine Sr couldn't pass on the role of mob boss to his son and why Johny sacs and then Phil Leotardo (two wayy older men) had the responsibility of doing the families biddings. No-one respected Carmine Jr.

I think this scene is overlooked as a complete repudiation of the “Little Carmine was actually a genius” theory. Where’s the calculated maneuver here? Little Carmine clearly intended to vouch for Tony but is visibly upset when he hears what his father says about calling Tony his own son. It’s only then when he decides to enact his master plan of turning Carmine further against Tony. But that’s clearly not what it was. Little Carmine was just an impulsive idiot, and this probably applies to every other incident involving his big mouth. Yes, including “whatever happened there”
