Carmela is trying to stop Meadow from doing something normal that her therapist encouraged her to do. The therapist was Carmela's idea but as soon as she's contradicted suddenly it's a bad idea. Meadow is an adult. Carmela is the one being a baby about this, because she's mad that SHE'S not getting what SHE wants. The number of people in these comments acting like Tony and Carmela are good, responsible parents is frankly baffling.

The transformation by Gandolfini from concerned Dad to intimating mob boss is remarkable but the subtext is even more chilling. Meadow knows she’s towing the line with asking about really happened to Jackie and doesn’t believe her Dad would let her in to that world but when Tony says “you try me” it’s him saying “you wanna know about the mob life? Well you really don’t. It’s dark, it’s brutal, people die. Stay in college and stop using his death as an excuse”
@Mickieshelton
@Mickieshelton 5 ай бұрын

In the end Meadow was right. Tony wanted them so insulated from the mob stuff yet he DID order the death of Jackie Jr. who was in an intimate relationship with Meadow shortly prior to that. Tony made Ralphy do it, and didn't consider how it would shatter Meadow, or Rosalie, or his best friend Jackie (now dead).
@Sidious6460

@@StepUpMedia039Lol did you watch the show at all ? Jackie got high on meth and murdered people, shot Furio trying to rob the Dimeo family. Tony literally tried to intervene to save him. Nobody else would hear it, so Tony then allowed Ralph to handle it. Tony was the one who wanted to give him a pass. Ralph ordered Vito to kill him. Your version of events is way way off. Watch season 3 again.
@savii4912
@savii4912 5 ай бұрын
@@StepUpMedia039tony didnt directly order it, but with how BiG jackie fucked up, it was impossible for tony to stop it. jackie wanted to be apart of the life. well, that life has rules. he killed a guy and shot a made man. for anyone in that life, those actions meant death. tony tried his hardest to keep jackie out of the game. but the kid did it anyways, and tony was forced to play by the rules of the life. that’s one of the themes of the show; tony wanting to make good decisions, but forced to adhere to the rules of the life .

Jamie Lynn talked about this scene on a podcast and how amazing James was in preparing her for it. For those who don't know, she had very little TV experience and had to be helped by Robert Iller in her first few episodes on where to look in relation to the camera. Jim offered her the use of his acting coach as well. She thought the coach was doing it out of a gesture of goodwill to Jim, only to find out later that he paid for all of it. Prepping for this scene while they rehearsed, Jim kept telling her "In this moment, you HATE this man". Everything about Tony should disgust Meadow and part of her wanting to go to Europe is to be anywhere but in Jersey and next to the mafia family that comes with being Tony's daughter. That life got Jackie killed so now she hates everything and everyone associated with it and wants to do nothing but just get away from them. She said they went over it again and again until they were satisfied with her level of hatred and disgust.

This was really the continuation of the rift that had occurred between Tony and Meadow at the end of Season Three where she ran across the street to get away from him. She was pushing him, sure that he had something to do with Jackies death... and she knew that if he had been responsible it would have been the most hurtful thing he could have done to her. She needed to push him because she wanted to hear him say, either yes he had been reponsible for Jackie, or no he had nothing to do with it. Tony, on his part, read intimations very well, and responded with the words of his conviction that he had done everything to try and protect Jackie, to even steer him away from that lifestyle. Technically, it wasn’t Tony who killed Jackie anyway, but Ralf (although Tony knew full well about it)... he spoke his words to her with such conviction that she could only believe him, and trust him again. That was what I got from this clip. Its similar to the Coach Hauser situation in Season One. It would have meant nothing to any of Tony’s crew to have wacked the coach once they learned that he had been playing with one of the soccer girls, but as Charmaine, and then Artie soon realised, had Tony or his crew whacked the coach, there was no way that the girls in the team (their daughters) wouldn’t feel responsible, especially Meadow (Remember, Meadow had asked Tony in the previous episode to Boca whether he was a mob boss) and it had been Meadow who had told Carmila and Tony about the coach and his behaviour in the first place.

For the first time, I finally watched the full series on a binge watch. It Lived up to the hype and more. One of my favorite scenes. On a deeper level, when Tony stood up and flip the switch from dad to mob boss. I think, He wasn’t actually addressing Meadow fully but himself. Facing the guilt he held over Jackie’s death. He was questioning himself through his daughter. Looking for answers that he didn’t want to admit but felt. By confronting his conscious, out loud.
@Augusto_Pinochet
@Augusto_Pinochet Жыл бұрын
That’s pretty close. He’s actually validating himself. Remember… he’s a sociopathic narcissist. He believes that he has the right to end a life when that life is disruptive or inconvenient to his life. He doesn’t feel guilt. He feels annoyance that OTHER people dwell on things that he’s done. Take Christopher, for instance. Everyone is upset after Christopher’s death, and Tony feels no guilt. And on top of that, he’s irritated that no one is grateful for this “wonderful” thing he has done, and he takes off to Vegas to relieve himself of the self-reflection that he would continue to engage in, while the people around him mourn.

Well actually Meadow says "doing" what you want, Carmella changes it to "getting" , and yes, getting what you want is for babies, but doing what you want is part of what it is to develop independence, to go out and fail of your own accord, and learn your own lessons: that is absolutely part of what it is to be an adult, and it's something that Tony and Carmella are standing in the way of here, hence Meadow's frustration is in a sense justified. Is she being a depressive brat? Sure, but her boyfriend was also recently wacked by her father, so she gets a bit of a pass in my book.

Everything about this scene is perfect. Every detail perfectly captures what is going on in the scene. Her door is partially open to her room, as it is her life. She asks her mom for a sandwich showing she really doesn't want to be a grown woman, but wants to be treated like one. Tony is placed barely in earshot, just like he always is with his home life. Tony sitting on the bowl is such a great detail. The best part of the scene is the lighting. When Tony comes up to her half of his face is shaded. It shows his duality. He does love his daughter, but the monster within him can't be controlled by him. It is always there. It is showing her that she gets to deal with the light side, but this dark side is way worse if she cares to truly find out. Everything about this is great.

So fcking on point. Saw this pre-kids; post kids it hits different. Most of us aren't "mob bosses" but we definitely inhabit a world that is much more challenging and hard than our kids, when they are kids, can even begin to understand. It's probably true that our children don't truly meet their parents, at least on some level, until everyone is an adult. Depending on the situation it could come as quite a shock, as it does here for Meadow, seeing the same face on her father that is the last face some have seen. Pretty sure that took her from "my Dad is a mob boss" in an abstract way to realizing her father is truly a dangerous man.

The difference is, Tony made things happen, took risks, made enemies. Carmela just fed off Tony, used his power to intimidate others when she felt like it, and condemned that power when she didn't need it. She wouldn't survive two days without him. Also, he's funny and entertainning, she's not -- at least not after Season 2. A character who does nothing but bitch is worthless.

Meadow was forced into lying for her father and guilt tripping Jackys sister at her own brothers wake. She had intelligent notions about what probably went on so she got drunk and stormed out. She can't process the grief because of the lies and she's using Jackys death as a manipulation because she doesn't fully empathise with her own regression. What she needs is honesty but she knows all she'll get is pathetic narcissistic half truths from the man that's meant to be raising her.

That's what's so awesome about this show. It never, ever felt rushed. Each episode had a ton of just silent parts or little quirks like the bowl that made it so real and believable. I always use the example where there's a scene at the end of an episode where it's just Tony eating pasta. It's seriously about 40 seconds of him just sitting there eating. No dialogue or anything, just eating and then a fade-to-black. Someone also pointed out the scene with the AK waiting for the bear by his pool. Another scene at the end of an episode where he's just sitting there. That time adds so much to a character. It gives the viewer a chance to reflect on the character and the scene. Just beautiful directing.

It's the little things that make a scene. Especially the scenes with Uncle June where he goes on random rants or quips that are funny or interesting besides the main point of the interaction he is supposed to be having in that scene.
