Furio puts the rest of them into stark contrast in so many ways: competent, independent, physically fit, disciplined. But in the end, NJ mob life makes him as miserable and unfulfilled as the rest of them. Also Tony was blowing smoke when he boasted of putting a hit out on him. His word doesn't reach that far. Furio is cousin to Donna Annalisa. The clan wouldn't clip of one of their best men on behalf of a glorified crew from Jersey with less class than the Germans.

Furio seemed to me to be a man with a real sense of his own history and place in the world - a true, old-world mob guy who could appreciate the things he had and be reasonable about the things he wanted. He was also one of the only guys who seemingly took care of himself, he could cook, he was smart (read: knew some history, was at least bilingual, and never actually did anything to fuck with Tony), and even tho he did drugs and stuff with Chris he kept in shape and never ran his mouth. I appreciated his character as someone who could more or less be successful in basically any legit field but was essentially cursed by being associated with the mafia growing up in Italy. I know the characters are all villains and not to be idolized or anything but Furio is probably the only one on the show who’d I actually work for, but he’d never have a lazy dumbass like me in his crew lol

To me Furio’s fall out signals the end Of the first half of the show. Up until he leaves the show is funnier and less depressing. The beginning of the end is when Jackie Jr robs the poker game, but the crew is never the same after Furio and even Ralph to an extent. Jersey really could’ve used Furio in the war against NY at the end, but by then all the best soldiers outside of Syl were gone .
@SopranosBlueprint5 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment! I like how you bring up the first/second half of the show. In a way, I see the show as divided into three periods, with the first ending upon Livia’s death, and on the other hand, I see the end of season 3 as the end of the first half with 9/11 happening between the third and fourth seasons and really signaling an end to that lighter period of innocence both on the show and in real life. It’s he farther we go, the darker we get, and you make a great point about Furio’s exit being another signal of that, as well.
@js36175 ай бұрын
I like your points. But in a way, I see it as a win for furio. He saw the shit coming from a mile away and got out of DODGE. it probably saved his life. If he stayed in NJ their shenanigans would've got him killed eventually. Either through their mess ups, or a direct hit. Made guys go missing faster than a cookie jar filled with crack rocks in NJ. Good for furio, yea...he's a mob killer like the rest of them but he was smart enough to get the f out when as soon he realized the joke that crew was.

Yeah, I don’t think Tony would’ve actually had the resources and manpower to get to Furio once he was back in Italy. Furio was much more connected there than Tony was…the fact that he had no idea about the Mauro Zucca situation until he got there indicated to me that he really didn’t have his finger on the pulse of the situation there, and certainly not enough to get one of Annalisa’s guys once he was back on Italian soil.

So why was there such an abrupt ending to the Furio character, what ever happened there? It turns out, the actor playing Furio, may have been leaking Soprano script info about upcoming episodes to his girlfriend at the time, who was a gossip columnist, and when David Chase found out about it, he had no choice but to quickly pull the plug on Furio. The empty house at the end, its all very allegorical!

Regardless of how that business is run, it was very disturbing watching him attacking the women. Slap, punch, kick, and spit on the wife was definitely overkill. Kinda had a little Tracy vibe(which was the worst). When men cross those lines who's to say it wouldn't happen again. We know how Carmela can be.
