This scene reminds me of when tony used to bring gifts for his mother and she would always flip him off. He wasn't the same sociable tony from season 1, by season 6 he grew to be very miserable, paranoid and resentful. Tony with his paranoia started to view chris with his drug problem and his constant mentioning of adrianna as a liability who would rat him out at any second. Chris was desperately trying to mature and be a better person, and throughout the show it was somtn tony always wanted, but in the end it somehow only made tony resent him more.

We saw it time and time again with Tony. Christopher became a better person when he was sober. Tony hated that, resented it. He did the same with Janice when she was working on her anger management and started to succeed. Tony couldn't stand seeing Janice having happiness, so he caused the big stink at the dinner about her dumped son. Nobody could be happy with Tony - he would never allow it, always sabotage someone. Look at Gene. Allow him to 'retire' and fuck off to Florida to live the high life with his $2 million? Nah fuck that, he'd be happy. Can't allow that!!! By the end, Tony was an absolute malignant c*nt!

He didn't really want him to mature though, just to become a more reliable minion. By the end, Tony was so narcissistic and toxic, he could not bear the thought of Christopher doing even slightly better with his demons. He was very smart and clearly understood what Christopher was going through with his addiction but chose to offer only the basest macho type comments to him only to bring him down even more. He did the same thing to Janice when she was doing better with her rage issues. In both those instances he understood exactly what he was seeing, people doing better, and chose to make them miserable for it. After watching the show, for some reason, these scenes remained the most disgusting ones in my mind and not the killings or any of that.

Imagine Christopher talking shit to the members of Animal Collective. Oh man that would have been a great season 4 angle

A lot of The Sopranos' character dynamics relies on the main cast being unwilling to be emotionally vulnerable. The therapy sessions are a contrivance to give Tony a way of speaking his mind but even then he maintains a degree of guardedness and self-delusion. The nature of their profession gave Tony the impression that if it was ever found out that he was seeking a psychiatrist then it'd be perceived as a sign of weakness that'd get him whacked. Even in the company of close associates, supposedly close friends, there's a Stoic and hierarchical guise constantly being maintained. Moltisanti gains some measure of release and affirmation through his AA sessions, friendship even, that he's completely deprived of among people who ostensibly should be supporting and nurturing him considering all he's done for them. It's fascinating because this kind of "Bowling alone" problem isn't unique to organized crime.

Just like the Godfather trilogy and goodfellas, they initially glorify the mob but slowly show how ruthless and narcissistic they are. Tony's storyline is very similar to Pacino in the Godfather. He isin't half the man his father was (like Tony wasn't half the man Jackie Sr was). He starts off a bit humble, somewhat decent; but gradually turns into a power hunger, narcissistic monster. Destroys his entire family, and dies full of regret and alone
@defragsbin11 ай бұрын
Yup, he talks a lot about the pressure and being completely alone with it, but Jackie Sr. had it all worked out before the cancer got him. Tony's problem is a mixture of familial & following in his father's footsteps in the life. If he'd been able to leave the mob, he had a chance of being a good person (see: his sister Barbara). However, with Johnny Boy (selfish POS killer) and Livia (neglected wife, black hole, malignant narcissist) as parents and being a boss that was surrounded by sociopaths, he was doomed.

“Okay, fine.” He knows what he did, even if he doesn’t fully show it. It’s only to avoid his own personal guilt that he focuses on Tony’s role in his life altering mistake instead of his own. Chris has to blame Tony for coercing him into prioritizing the “family” above all else in his life, because if he openly acknowledged that he alone willingly chose throw away his love and best chance at a normal happy life, all for someone that never really saw him as anything more than a useful pawn, the grief and shame would inevitably destroy him.

Not sure if this has been discussed yet, but was Tony’s weight gain in the later seasons supposed to represent the build up of stress in his life? Tony never worked out more than twice In the show, but with his divorce with Carmela, the increasing pressure from the FBI, was his added weight intended from David Chase or was it just James gaining some weight?
