In Italy we see Colombo in a neutral way. He was the product of his time, not a hero for certain, but neither the genocidal maniac people love to portray him these days. In the end he wasn’t worse than the rest of the colonizers, he just happened to be the first. We study him in school but we don’t really celebrate him (maybe just a little in Genova and the rest of Liguria), we have plenty of better historical figures to praise. Personally i think italian americans should still celebrate him as a symbol of pride and birth of their own culture. So Columbus day is cool.
