@Dj.MODÆO2 жыл бұрын
In the mafia, 1%er Biker gangs, and military black ops units….after something happens like a crime or secret mission and it is over and done with, you never, ever bring it up again. If at some point it become necessary to reference something from the past you #1 keep it as vague as possible #2 you word it in a way that doesn’t incriminate the outfit or admit that you or the person your talking to were involved or responsible #3 You never mention any specific details or unnecessary details that the person your discussing it with does not need to hear to understand what your talking about. Jimmy did not need to say “dead columbian money”…for Tony to know what money he was talking about. What jimmy should have said was “the police kept asking me questions about money that they think we stole from a murder scene.” This statement would have appeared completely innocent to anyone listening in and would have appeared as if they had nothing to do with it, while at the same time communicating to Tony exactly what the FBI raid was about, what the FBI was looking for, and also communicate to Tony that he needed to either get rid of that money asap internationally outside of the FBIs jurisdiction or carefully spent it in a way that didn’t leave a paper trail.

Such clever writing packed into less than three minutes. Both Tony and Jimmy are trying to tease out an incriminating statement from one another, all while trying stay in-character to avoid suspicion. Jimmy speaks matter-of-factly about Tony's interests in an attempt to appear like a trustworthy partner while goading Tony to acknowledge the illegal assets he's referencing. Meanwhile, Tony speaks in detached pleasantries to appear happy with Jimmy's release, while outlining how flimsy Jimmy's story is in an attempt to trip him up.

Why on earth would the FBI tell Jimmy about new fingprint techniques??? It makes no sense. Jimmy even goes out of his way to talk about the Colombian drug money. So obvious ... even his body language is off...
@Dr.AdamK.3 жыл бұрын
I think the grasping of the punching bag right before he asks Tony about the money is meant to be a tell that Jimmy is nervous. It is another example of amazing directing with every little bit of attention given to detail.

I like the lighting in this scene. Jimmy is well lit and you can see him. As if it's saying the spot light is on him and you can see his intention. Whereas Tony there is half a shadow on all his shots. Like he is showing half of himself. Wheels turning in his head and knowing he's going to kill the rat but displaying an aloof demeanor

I think tony knew it at the first moment Jimmy stated to talk . But i think tony only knew it subconsciously at the moment

He was already suspicious because Jimmy got out on bail that quickly for a gun charge which typically doesn’t happen, especially when you already got a conspiracy charge on you already. Tony knows the feds like to get guys back on the street asap so nobody suspects they turned rat.

The last line is genius. “Had to show my face so people think they are off the hook” Tony “yeah I know how that goes “ saying to Jimmy that’s why u are here trying to get yourself off the hook.. genius writing,

You know, to be fair, I didn't catch this upon my first viewing. Of course, I was 20 and naive as hell. But I didn't see the signs. The language. The body posture. The uncomfortable movements across the room. Tony refusing to answer questions directly for fear of a wire tap. Hell, I was probably barely aware of surveillance back then. Obviously I didn't have the makings of a varsity mafia boss.

They deliberately made it obvious for the audience. No way a wiseguy capable of attaining the rank of capo would ever come to the boss' house this hot without recognizing it as a death sentence. One could argue that the FBI pressured him into the conversation but even they aren't that stupid. This scene was indicative of the early seasons before they trusted the audience with the source material.
@BasePuma400710 ай бұрын
Why wouldn't the FBI try this? Best case scenario is they get Tony. Worst case scenario, Tony figures out what Jimmy is doing and they kill him, which eliminates a capo but also forces the members of the family to commit a serious crime, which they could potentially be charged with in the future if any evidence gets out.
@BM-wh5qk7 ай бұрын
Having a capo as an informant is pretty advantageous. Jimmy would have been much more likely to have access to Tony in the future than Ray Curto, who barely interacts with Tony.

I don’t understand why people think Jimmy is a rat. He was helping Tony here and it’s just Jimmys poor social skills that make Tony think he’s an informant. He was just trying to help. You guys are so mean.

The director did an excellent job with this scene. When Jimmy walks and talks, the camera lingers on Tony, and you see how the wheels are turning for him as he gradually realizes what's going on. If you didn't already guess what Jimmy's doing here, you damn sure get it by the time the scene is over from Gandolfini's silent acting.
