1:23 - 1:33 makes my brain go haywire trying to appreciate what a great actor James Gandolfini is. There's something so subtle in how we as viewers (having seen the previous scenes of his crew cracking jokes themselves) can now see his character go from instinctually thinking this is as funny as any of those jokes but having to hide the laugh inside him, working as subtly as he can to instead manifest his reaction as "disgust" and sell it to Johnny. This scene really highlights how little respect New York had for Jersey. John, despite the insult to his wife, thought it was ok to put an associate of Tony’s family in the hospital, and openly talk about having one of his captains killed. That, coupled with the way John would use Tony to carry out hits for him and do business deals, as a boss of a family, shows that despite their friendship, he didn’t take Jersey seriously.

@TheStopShort5 жыл бұрын
John Lorton bold of you to assume that I don’t watch the show. Let’s go back a few scenes. In the scene where John beats up Donny K and pisses on him, he’s having a conversation in the bar, and he brings up that Ginny used to teach ballet. Donny K laughs at this point and looks directly at John. Clearly, he heard the Ginny Sack joke from Ralph or someone else in his crew. John’s been stewing with this for a couple episodes now, and here it exploded. How can Johnny think anything else other than the kid’s laughing at him? That’s why he beat him. At this point in the show, although Johnny is angry about the joke and maybe acting a little irrational, he is still a pragmatist, unlike the later seasons. “The kid was laughing.” “About this?” “I don’t know.” To beat a guy when he’s unsure if he was laughing at him or not is a real stupid conclusion to make about someone like John. “The kid was laughing. “About this?” “And I’m not.” Johnny doesn’t think the situation is funny at all. And Tony knows he enjoys a joke as much as the next guy, but not at the expense of his wife. So, I have no reason to think the subs were incorrect.
@TheStopShort5 жыл бұрын
Furthermore, I think the statement doesn’t imply that the kid is laughing at the joke. (Which whether he did or not is up for the viewer to decide, and honestly not that important in the gravity of this episode, only the consequences of what followed after.) I think it was rather to emphasize how seriously upset John is about this whole situation, and that he’s not going to let it go.

The acting in this scene is incredible. It's a real conversation between to friends. One guy hurt and wants to avenge his wife's honor, and the other trying to save a mutual friends life bc of his friend taking it that far. It's deeper than what's on the surface

What I like about watching Sopranos clips, rather than the episodes I've seen 10-12 times, is you see how masterfully each individual vignette plays out.

There is something genuine about the actor for Johnny Sack. He is so slick and cool but yet you know he's dangerous. David Chase is a fucking genius as the heart of this great show. And the actor for Johnny Sack was perfect casting. As for Gandofini, forget about it.....oooooh! Top shelf. RIP.
@garethcraddock99712 жыл бұрын
I love the Rubenesque comment from Johnny Sack... That's love. That whole part of the show, with Ginny and Johnny, was so touching. When he tells her to stop this 'dieting nonsense'. Loved it.
Despite Johnny sack being being pretty much an antagonistic character towards Tony at times, I always respected him for staying with his wife no matter what, never had a side girl, stayed loyal

Gandolfini playing Tony when he first heard the joke was brilliant. You could tell he wanted to laugh like hell but furiously held it in for Johnny's sake. If you listen closely the first words he says immediately after have the undercurrent of laughter, but it's him trying not to laugh at it which Johnny appreciated I think.
