This scene perfectly sums up most son's relationship with their fathers. No matter how far you've come or what you've achieved, there is always the inner child that wants to know they've earned their fathers respect or made them proud.

Yeah there's so many layers to this scene, the hotel not being a brothel anymore, not being able to get a steak and potatoes with a bottle at any place, and Tony as a child remembering Paulie in his 20s...when you think about the arc of these characters and how at end Paulie basically became Crazy Old Uncle Paulie it's kinda sad, but the reality of life. Time stops for nobody. Can't wait for the new movie from back in the day.

The memories of 'their' era, of 'their' America have changed, as symbolized by the shitty corporate hotel that feels more like a hospital. The road trip episode was agonizingly uncomfortable. Tony realized the tough guy he wanted to be as a kid, was a loudmouthed disappointment, much like the shitty hotel.

The sad part is not when paulie mentions that johny boy cried when he was born, the real sadness in this scene is they try to revive the old days by going to those old motels when they were in their prime, no rules and booze every hour, they had to follow the hotel rules 🤣 the irony.

MY FAV EPISODE! ..I read David Chase wanted more "stand alones" like this and Pine Barrons..(Paulie & Christopher lost in woods episode, voted #1 in most polls)..not tied to a story line.. but Tony gettin shot and war with NY took more time to complete than originally envisioned.

3:19 "never knew where I stood with him" probably just made him think that to keep on his toes, so he would always work for his approval. and whether he loved him or not, Tony never got to know and the man died with his son feeling unloved this show is such a cautionary tale

Yep, very true. He basically passed on his sociopathy, although I do think Tony had this predilection towards it hereditarily. His dad just awakened it. That's my interpretation, a genetic predisposal that was dormant but brought out by his mother but mainly his father as a coping mechanism to the brutality, lies, and coldness around him in his formative years.

I love the way any interaction between the mobsters and ordinary civilians who have no idea who they are is emphasized -- people like the hotel clerk don't know who Tony is and they aren't concerned with what he wants or making him happy, and you can tell it low-key pisses him off. It's like the show is emphasizing that at the end of the day, these guys may be big fish in the pools they swim in, but out in the open ocean, nobody gives two shits about them.

The significance of the $100 was that, just as his father gave $100 to the cop on behalf of Paulie, his son Tony is also giving $100 to once again pay for Paulie. Like father like son. That was Chase's way of signifying that Tony is going the path of his father.
