The more I think about the whole Raymond Curto storyline, the funnier it gets. Basically every other character of his position (captain) is heavily involved in the show, but we never hear anything about Curto... we never see him on the job, delivering money to Tony, or really even interacting with anybody, aside from random moments of banter at restaurants and card games. Just this random standoffish guy who’s supposedly respected by everyone, and turns out to be easily the FBI‘s best informant. Pussy and Adriana always objected strongly to being micced up, even when they‘re forced to do so, and here’s Raymond Curto casually suggesting to his clearly apathetic handler that he should wear a wire to a Soprano family event. It‘s fucking hilarious. And then the whole thing at his funeral where Rusty talks about guys like him being a dying breed. It‘s almost like the entire character was invented for that one punchline lmao

Even funnier when at the end of Eugene’s arc his FBI handlers off-handedly mention that they lost one of their best sources recently, in which Eugene connects the dots and asks if he was a cooperator but then they just ignore the question and move on to something else. The only person to have a reason to even _question_ Curto’s loyalty, and of course he kills himself soon after in the same episode.

In the first season, Tony brings up the idea of Ray being boss. Most likely to be the older lightning rod for Tony. Ray mentions that he told the commission he’d be doing “less, not more,” due to his son with MS. I guess the show implies that Ray is semi-retired.

Tony had a streak of plot armor luck until the end of the series where he is completely done for, even if he wasn't killed in the diner. For example, the Boyz 2 Men Junior hired were terrible shots. His basement flooded and Meadow took the fed mic with the lamp to college.

When you think about it, Curto's behavior makes perfect sense: the days where Omerta had value were long gone, and as the Mafia culture surrounding that mechanism broke down, there really wasn't any value in being 100% loyal to the Family. It created a public perception that Cosa Nostra still existed, but it was a perception that everyone know largely didn't exist, and the reality is that it had gone from the Honored Society to a loose confederation of people who largely looked out for themselves. It was only the delusions of past grandeur and the usefulness of being part of an organization that kept it going... and Curto clearly understood that. I doubt he went gleefully into the arms of the FBI just out of the blue, it was probably like all the other informants where they caught him doing something routine and low-level that nonetheless put him in a bad position, and Curto decided that the best way to operate was to have a foot in both worlds: be loyal to neither and both, seem like he's useful, but never give them anything that makes you stand out. Basically, play both sides against the middle, and in the meantime grind as you always have, knowing that so long as the FBI thinks you're an asset, and you're already half-retired, so long as you don't make your involvement obvious, a lot of other people are going to get taken down before you ever really become a target of either side.
@Segasage9

It's fun spotting the behavior of Ray, because we know he's wired. For example, when he enters the Bing, he specifically says: "How you doin', Hesh?" instead of the usual mob greeting such as "Oh!" "Eyh" or just a pat-down with "How you doin'". And how he provides exposition to the recording with: "Oh! Big P***y!" when Chris just refers to BP as "him". Why does he need to go in office depot with the fed wearing an ear piece, like couldn't the agent just go in and get the batteries alone or Raymond go alone. Seems like an unnecessary risk for some batteries

Curto's deception is illustrative of what, I think, would be the biggest cause of worry to a mob boss: not knowing which of your guys is wired up. Sure, knowing you could be killed at any moment would be an issue but I think you'd just have to come to peace with that aspect of mob life. The true, nagging fear would be one of your main guys betraying you and sending you to prison. Just look at how many guys in Tony's crew/family/circle are talking to the feds: Jimmy, Pussy, Curto, Adriana, Eugene, Massarone, and Carlo. Based on mob books and documentaries that I've read/seen, this is very accurate as far as how many gangsters are ratting to the cops.

Ray did not flip over the cat house bust. If Vin Makazian only got suspended, then they really wouldn't have enough over his head to turn him to informant. He would have flipped, probably over a drug charge that we never got to see, just like Puss. He couldn't do the time so he chose to inform because the feds would let him earn so he could support his kid with MS.
