Tony really had a valid point talking to Richie. By this time it was the early 2000's and the mob really had to watch how they conducted business, that's why Tony implemented the rule of no more speaking business with the boss directly. By this time old school gangsters such as Richie were released from the can after being locked up since the late 1980's. Here Richie just cant comprehend the realization that some tactics they to do different and the scrutiny from the FBI was higher than ever.

Notice how every Sopranos character who comes out of prison has a chip on their shoulder, and thinks everybody is disrespecting them, and ultimately they become the cause of their own demise.

Also, very good observation on the part of the OP. I think it's a fairly astute means of commenting on the exponential change that has occurred in mafia business in the latter half of the 20th century, which could well be applied to the greater society. As the world becomes more advanced, so does change over time become more extreme and striking to those removed from it by reasons of isolation, be it through incarceration or other means. Their inability to reintegrate into mob life seamlessly is just a symptom of their greater inability to simply rejoin the normal world, as it has moved on without them. They're like vengeful spirits more than they are valuable associates in a world where subterfuge is key. For this reason, I don't see it as "snitching" for the family to arrange for Feech's parole officer to visit him while in possession of stolen property. It was a merciful thing to do, as he'd eventually go to jail again for something worse, or be killed. These "mobsters frozen in time" are at once a stark reminder of the mob's lost power and a repudiation of the vaunted "golden years" Tony and others wax philosophically about.

Knowing Richie, he probably backhanded the kid who spilled the rice on him lol

Actually, he seemed to be okay with kids lol when Beansie reprimanded that kid at the pizza parlor Richie calmed him down and told him it was okay. And the kid clerk at Scatino's sports store, Richie seemed okay with him. I don't think a dude like Richie would backhand a civilian kid in a mall full of witnesses.

It is too bad Ritchie didn't slow down and back off like Tony said. Tony seemed to want to work things out with the guy, at least in the beginning. But these guys in prison, they think something is owed to them and they can't see Tony as anything but the teenager he was before they went in. Also, the kid who spilled the fried rice, he never had the making of a varsity athlete. That's all I'm gonna say.

Richie should have just been a well paid debt collector under someone else's control and not try to manage things. Then he'd have no problems and have a long career. Trying to run stuff is what did him in. He was a solider, not a thinker.

This is Tony back when he still tried to be reasonable with people. If this were season 6 Tony, he would've been violent and aggressive with Richie from day one.
