One of the things that amazes me about The Sopranos was a lot of the cast were fairly regular people who had non acting careers and had only dabbled in acting or not done any at all prior to the show and were in their 40’s & 50’s by the time it aired. Vincent Pastore (Big Pussy) had worked as a bouncer and ran nightclubs. Vincent Curatola (Johnny Sack) ran his own paving business. Steve Schirripa (Bobby Baccala) was an entertainment director at hotels in Las Vegas. Arthur Nascarella (Carlo Gervasi) was a NYPD officer for 20 years. Frederico Castelluccio (Furio) was an artist and painter. Denise Quinn (Ginny Sack) actually was picked right off the street on a casting call they had for the role. Stevie Van Zandt (Silvio Dante) had a massive music career with Bruce Springsteen but had never acted when David Chase called to cast him on the show. I always figure that’s a part of the reason the show has such a real life, visceral vibe unlike most others.

An allocution allows the defendant to explain why the sentence should be lenient. In plea bargains, an allocution may be required of the defendant. The defendant explicitly admits specifically and in detail the actions and their reasons in exchange for a reduced sentence. In principle, that removes any doubt as to the exact nature of the defendant's guilt in the matter.

The final eight episodes are probably the greatest of any TV show in existence. They are, each and every one, mini-films. They have such weight, and feel like they're barreling towards some kind of frightening conclusion, but they have these moments of incredible beauty; like Bobby holding his baby at the end of Soprano Home Movies, or Tony tripping out in the desert as a creepy acoustic lament plays in the background. Or my favourite; when they go to pick up AJ from the depression clinic, and an ancient Italian folk song plays in the background, like it's reaching through space and time to claim AJ. Anto-neddo...
