I love how the song is a little louder in Adriana’s fantasy, as if she’s indulging in one final moment of freedom. Then, brought back to reality, the same song but quieter/more realistic on the radio. There’s no going back. She sealed her fate the minute she got into that car. And maybe deep down she knew something was off.

@nickys34 first of all, I think you're forgetting about Lorraine. Second, she was a government cooperator/potential witness. Had she continued, somewhere in the near future, though not attempting to, she could have put away all of the major people. This is why she was whacked. Men have honor and what have you because women don't get involved, they don't say anything, but Adrianna did, so this no longer counts for her.

@SupremePrestige “They don’t kill ya for nothing.” I beg to differ. On the show pretty much everyone in the life was either a target for assassination or actually assassinated. Some for hardly any infraction. And some were allowed to get away with things that others got killed for. Same goes irl - Salvie Testa was a loyal soldier of Little Nicky Scarfo but Scarfo had him executed because he was paranoid Testa would rise up mainly because a job Scarfo had asked him to do was done “too” well. Jimmy Burke murdered or had murdered members of his own crew because he didn’t want to give them a share of the Lufthansa heist (not all of them spent the money irrationally as Goodfellas portrays). Anthony Spilotro ordered a hit on is long time friend Frank Cullotta because he thought he might rat (even though Cullotta had shown no signs before then) and ironically this information actually turned Cullotta into an informant. Same for scores of others. Honestly, seriously look into the real life of it all, there was virtually no loyalty and people would get whacked for the slightest reason.

It was a complicated situation. Adriana herself was a kind hearted girl who had no intentions of truly harming anyone, yet she fell in love with Chris, who was a mid-level gangster in the Soprano crime family. The way the Sopranos and other crime families perceive and feel about their families is so twisted. They always treat everyone with what appears to be love and respect, yet if you break any of their rules, you're dead. They obviously didn't have true unconditonal love for the girl, or they wouldn't have taken her life. However, it's difficult to breed and experience unconditional love in the cold, heartless world of crime centered around making money fast AT ALL COSTS and BY ALL MEANS. It's an effective system if you don't mind living a life of paranoia and anxiety and can live with the fact that you'll likely never have a real connection of unconditional love with anyone since not getting caught is actually more important than the relationships you have. So not getting caught by the authorities so you don't go to jail trumps the love you give and receive from even your family. Many say they would die for those they love, and I'm sure many would go to jail for those they love too. This doesn't mean that those engulfed in the life of crime will not experience love at all, it just means they will likely not experience unconditional love due to their code and belief system about society and life in general. Yet falling in love with a kind-hearted soul who truly loves you unconditionally could change one's path. Chris had this chance as he truly did love Adriana at the very bottom of his heart, yet he pussied out like a bitch and let Tony dictate the situation he had with Adriana, instead of handling it like a man himself and following his heart. They would have probably had to flee to another country and run for the rest of their lives.

Anyone else out there pick up on fact that Carmella had banged several different guys on the series? Chase left subtle, but definitely clues to my statement. Realizing this, TS would have had Carmella clipped, as she could not be trusted either. And people rag on TS for his sleeping around. What a joke! Carmella banged AJ teacher and it was strongly suggested with subtle clues that she also banged the interior decorator guy, Furio, the guy on motorcycle in Paris that Roe wanted to bang, the animal control guy dealing with the bear, the priest and the tennis pro guy who stopped giving lessons and turned it over to the braless lesbian who wanted to bang Ade. I am considering doing a you tube outlining the hints and clues to support this. Chase wanted it to be subtle, not in your face to further show what a hipocrite Carm was. This scene reminded me of how TS would have had her clipped if he ever found out!

Fun Fact, Drea was on a podcast where she said that because of the mania surrounding the Sopranos at that time, HBO couldn't risk word getting out of certain things, so they actually filmed both outcomes for that reason. They couldn't trust ANYONE to release important details from an episode. She filmed both outcomes not knowing which would be in the final cut... turns out both were used. Another detail, Drea pushed for one change when it was time to release the episode. They filmed Chris telling Tony about Adriana and intended to show it in this episode before this scene, but Drea asked them to take it out because it takes all the mystery out of what's going on. She preferred that the audience not know whether what Tony tells her on the phone is deception or not. They obliged (and aired Chris and Tony's scene in a later episode as a flashback). And she was SOOOO right! Witholding that information meant the audience didn't know anything more than Adriana did, and the scene with Adriana driving away gave everyone relief, and then BAM, she's in the car with Sil and everyone fears the worst in a mere moment. I was pretty young when I saw this on HBO. Horrified me quite a bit tbh. I like it when an actor can put their own stamp on their work and make real creative cinematic decision for their character. This is a good one. The story was written by the writers, but this scene right here was Drea on double-duty as actress and director.
@tjhall93777 ай бұрын
@@runthenumbers9698that is the mark of not only a great team but a healthy creative environment as well, it’s common for creative “heads” (like directors, writers, or music producers) to be dismissive the actual talent’s feelings - the people who are actually channeling what’s on paper - as not valid but Drea spoke up on behalf of her character and it ended up being edited into one of the most jarring cuts of the entire show at 1:44 (besides the very ending of course, which is still regularly talked about almost 20 years later) and solidifies her as the most tragic character arc of the entire show.

@@runthenumbers9698 Not showing Christopher going to Tony in that episode was such a brilliant decision. Had they kept that scene, then there'd be no questions, no suspense. I may be naive but I really thought she could make it out alive. I thought maybe she will run away. Or maybe Christopher is really at the hospital and the last image we'll see of Adriana is her watching him on his bed and leaving. I think I was in denial. Her death is so brutal. I was used to watching all these mobsters whacking each other, but what a harsh reminder of their true nature that they'd do this to such an innocent girl (yes I know she snitched but they didn't even bother to check what she's told the feds, which wasn't much).

The biggest punch in the gut of this scene is the brief couple of seconds where Adriana is seen driving off with her red suitcase, finally having the wherewithal to escape the mob life, and then the quick cut away to reality with her in the car with Sil, the song about getting away that was in the forefront reduced to background music on the radio. You almost think she gets what's going to happen as she stares out at those empty Jersey woodlands where who knows how many bodies are buried, but her love for Christopher blinds her to the point that she doesn't get it until the bitter end.

The part where you see her driving away from Jersey was so well done, just for a moment it appeared she was getting herself out of danger (Which by itself would have been a major step up in intellect for Adriana, which is why when this episode first aired I thought "No way. She's too dumb to run"), but of course it turns out it's all in her imagination and she only thought about taking off, and is now on the way to her own burial, courtesy of Sil.
@runthenumbers96988 ай бұрын
Your framing there is interesting too. You believed her to be "too dumb to run" but this scene shows that she might not be as dumb as her decisions. She knows fully well what she AUGHT to be doing and she is daydreaming about making the right decision. To me, that's acknowledgement that stupidity might have NEVER been responsible for her poor decisions. Perhaps she has simply never had the nerve to act on her better senses. I wouldn't really call this Adriana getting full-on bamboozled. There's shades of that for sure... but there's also shades of her facing the music. Then again... maybe bravery IS stupidity... who's to say it's not?

What disturbs me the most is how Sil can interact with Adriana and not feel anything. The ability to interact with your victims, talk to them and see that they are human beings and still kill them is so dark. It makes me look at the mafia in a different light. Even serial killers do not look at their victims as people, but as objects to act upon. So many times on the show we see characters that we love kill people that they have close emotional ties to and they don't seem to care afterwards. How can you laugh with someone, hold them and call them your friend, lover etc and end their life without batting an eyelash?

Yeah, not until the last second if she really knew she would've been pleading from the beginning but she's embracing the contemporary music like it's a montage to something pretty and Silvio is talking to her like a person trying not to scare a lamb for fear of spoiling the meat.

They are, but why was Adriana- with an Uncle and other family members in the mafia- telling a complete stranger that she met in a department store all of her business? Why would she let her into her life so quickly, easily and close? It's a shame Christopher was too drugged up to realize exactly why he couldn't stand Danielle-he probably could've seen through her if he were sober.

I grew up close to that overpass on 95 just outside of Baltimore. I know it well. It's changed since 2005. If her daydreaming were reality, Adriana was a touch over 3 hours away from danger and on the road to freedom. When it cuts to the car and the song is on the radio, my heart skips a beat. Back to reality. So tragic. Such great writing.

It's her pure stupidity that got her killed not her sweetness. If she even had a quarter of brain when they threatened her with 25 and life and told her to try her luck telling tony her friend that she brought over during sunday dinner was an undercover FBI agent, first she would have had to call him for bail anyway because Chris didn't have that type of money and it would be better if she told Tony first or at least had Tony with Sam for several reasons if even at the least so Chris didn't punch her, he would have known that she wasn't up to anything suspicious anyway due to the fact that he literally how to pick her up from jail and I'm sure she would let him check for a wire all the times so she should've done just that.. Tony would've gotten her the best lawyer out there or hid her, those charges never would've stuck. There wasn't even any proof of how much blow she personally had on her its a tale of pure stupidity the story of Adriana.

The daydreaming scene so explicitly showing she wishes she were going somewhere else right then - and note that her BAG is in the passenger seat, not Christopher, this is an escape fantasy for just her right now - is enough to convince me that she figured it out, I do think she didn't figure it out until she was on the road though. Her stoic crying, resignation, and looking out the window as they drove into the woods followed by the feeling of adrenaline and panic when you snap to and realize THIS IS IT. Poor girl. And all of you talking shit about how she acts when Silvio gets out of the car need a fucking reality check. You're delusional if you think you wouldn't try to run, beg, do anything to keep yourself alive.
@flightofthebumblebee95296 жыл бұрын
I thought it was played perfectly. She was always a bit afraid of these guys. Tony had her trust and his convincing story got her into a car with Sil. At that point during the trip it was too late to back out. The daydream is heart breaking. She had a strong feeling this was it but when the car stops and Sil gets out shock and disbelief then finally desperation take over.

@Thelondonbadger so...the number one reason people should keep a gun is because the mob put a hit on them?
@TheHigherVoltage6 жыл бұрын
@Thelondonbadger "Homegenous cultures are less violent day 2 day" No they aren't. Some of the most violent countries in the world are overwhelmingly one race, one language, one religion and with a single political regime. Columbia come to mind. Some of the most violent suburbs in America are all the same race, colour, religion and political leaning as well. Fuck sakes man. Why doesn't your claims ever match reality? "and strength that comes from public shaming. " Public shaming of what? Shaming people who are just trying to live a decent life and pursue happiness, but someone else wants a scapegoat, so they start blaming gays for anything and everything gays have nothing to do with? "Japan, taiwan and some other nations have low crime rate because of no cultural diversity." Why not just say you've never been to Japan or Taiwan? You're selling misrepresentation of both. Let me guess, you believe that meme going around claiming there is no Islam in Japan? Why not Google "Islam in Japan" and learn some truth for a change. Or "Christianity in Japan". Or "white culture in Japan". Or "Job teaching English in Japan". Or look at any pictures of downtown Tokyo, and notice all the buildings there that are selling Western culture. "Mainstream media sources are worse than alternative, they have democrat politicians on tv calling for harassment and assaulting people that doesn't buy into their idealogy." Yep. And that's total bullshit. What's even more bullshit is you refuse to admit that same shit happens in alternative medias - but to a much higher degree. It's all wrong. But the truth is, the right spreads far more lies and hate filled rhetoric than the left. They are also responsible for immensely more violent acts...if you want to cite the political leanings and media-outlets most gravitated to by the assailants. I've never heard of a gang of gays beating a hetrosexual to death. I have heard of dozens of gangs of alt-right Christians beating gays to death. "An armed society is a polite society." NRA propaganda isn't reality. The most polite countries in the world are also among the least armed. The USA is the most armed first world country - yet is verifiably the most violent. Being armed doesn't make one polite. Facts prove this. " It should be everyone, including ex cons. They need it the most cos of the victims families wanting to enact revenge, as well as other criminals wanting to kill them." Wow. Just wow. So paroled criminals should have easier access to firearms than people who have never committed a crime in your mind? Jesus Christ, you people are fucking insane.

@Thelondonbadger Your earlier comment : "If you have more than 2 power structures, it gets violent fast." Your last comment "That only leaves 2 power structures to aspire to..." and argue that's what leads to crime. When you talk out of your ass, you're going to get caught. Why not learn some facts so you don't have to change your story every comment?

Personally I think it's a testament to Drea de Matteo's portrayal as Adriana, that people actually cared when she got murdered on the show. How many other characters on the show, would illicit that kind of sympathy, when they get dropped? And for those that are shocked when Christopher puts "family" loyalty ahead of Adriana's well being. Remember that at Christopher core; he was a weak person. The only reason that people even tolerated him, was because he was Tony's nephew.
@geordiejones56186 жыл бұрын
Oh for sure. She made what msot actresses would portray as a bimbo to a nuanced victim of an entire cuture. Richie was family so jackie was family so this life was all she knew. And damn she really wanted to "save" Christopher but she never could... no one could save either of them.
