Dave Rat's CAT boxes are great I use them too :) For those of you reading this comment .... I'm sure Bart and Stacey already know this, but for those who don't... in order for the connections to be balanced, and devices requiring phantom power.... the CAT5 or CAT6 ethernet cable that is used between any of these CAT type boxes must be a shielded ethernet cable, most Ethernet CAT cables are not shielded. Just sayin :)

@@orcastro2 Hi Oscar, if you are using the cable for live stage use, make sure and buy good flexible cables. I would contact Sweetwater and ask one of their sales people what they suggest. Just recently discovered your channel, and I am addicted. I am a lifelong musician, sound guy, and for the last 25 years a DJ. I just can’t help but comment however on the inefficiency I watch you two deal with every video with your loading and unloading. I did that for years until I got in an accident going to a gig, luckily survived, and soon after switched to using a large trailer with a ramp to get the gear that almost crushed me out of the vehicle I also ride in. Now, those carts and rolling boxes you load gear on go straight in and stay loaded for the ride, and then back out for the next gig. NO MORE BACK BREAKING loading and unloading. You both look so weary after so much work loading off the cart, I would LOVE to see you switch to this kind of rig.
@thesoundcouple2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Terry! Appreciate your insights and sharing your experience. There isn't a one size fit's all solution even within our available options and resources. We have a trailer with a ramp, and do use it on occasion. Unfortunately, trailers come with their challenges logistically and for other reasons as well. We are careful and we really have it down and know each other. In fact, we have had people offer out of kindness to help, and we typically decline those offers. We have a system down that comes with no surprises. The heaviest single item we have are the subs which equates to 50lbs each, which isn't that bad. The rack mixer is is heavy as well, but we split that lift too. Other than that, we are mostly modular into smaller soft cases and single items. You can check out this video that we talk about our pack: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oIWQdqyZo9errdU

Just catching up on some earlier videos :) .... have you done a bit on how you mike up a drum kit for live sound and then how you level up the signals from the drum kit with the rest of the band? I'd imagine it depends a lot on the room and how close the dancers/audience are, as you'll have a lot of unamplified signal from the drums and brass, and possibly from the guitarist and bass player amps (if they are using those as monitors rather than DI-ing into the board) p.s. SoundTools CAT Box is seriously cool! The people I work with mostly have a Behringer X32 with a stage box, so running Cat 5/6/7 to take the stage box back to the mixing desk is something we've used, as well as the adjusting mixer settings while sitting in the audience. I've got the Behringer X18 at home but I've not used it in anger yet ... most of our stuff is one hour singer/songwriter or small acoustic band sets, with occasional open mic concerts so every act is a cold start and changes every 5-10 minutes for several hours.
@thesoundcouple2 жыл бұрын
You are really capturing all of the main points....the concept we keep driving home is the importance of musicians playing to the room and their client. We tend to work with like minded bands, so we don't run into this battle much. However, drums/horns are going to create a certain amount of volume on their own and if that's creating an issue, we have need we try to make the client own that. All of that said, the newer "designer" rooms with concrete floors and open ceilings does not make any of our jobs easier. We also talk a lot in our videos of mixing around what the stage is giving you and not trying to mix over it (we discuss this a bit at around 9:20 mark on our Faders vs. tablets video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nKXdqZJ7qKd_q7M

@@thesoundcouple I first ran across another similar breakout box product and then the StudioHub+ adapters and system meant to stream line installations of radio stations. After coordinating a wish list for a few years I had a few neat ideas in my head and a bit of money to invest in my set up. I went from pulling things out of plastic tubs, stacking and wiring to pre-wired rack cases interconnected with 3 cables. 1 for power + amps and another for UPS + mixer. The other idea I had was that with the cat rack I could run 1 cable out and split it into 2 mics ( instrument + Vox ) on 2 stands using a hybrid system. I did an event right after setting this up where I hijacked the hotels 2 wireless microphones and tied into their mixer for the house speakers with one cable run and was packed up in a half hour wondering what I was missing because it couldn't have gone that fast. I really need to make a video. It's 2 rack cases, speakers, mics and stands. Set up usually takes 15 to 20 minutes depending on what I'm doing usually 2 to 4 sometimes 6 mics+DI. I also got the fan outs and boxes so I can use it as a snake system when tying into other systems.

Sorry... one more note.... regarding the Cat Snake, I created two custom XLR cables for another method of using it... both of these I used purple cables so they stand out. One has Female to Female, the other Male To Male. That way you can use say three of the connectors as inputs and the fourth as monitor outputs. For example, for a keyboard player. Two inputs for his keys stereo, one for his mic and the fourth connect (using the purple XLR) serves as an output to his monitor. Cool, eh?

22:35 - Nice CONSERVATIVE levels and gain staging there! Hardly any 'yellows', and letting the amplifiers do their job. Many younger soundies would stage into the orange/yellow zone, which in my opinion colors the sound a little, bends it so to speak. I call it distortion, and have little tolerance for such.

Hi Bart. Re-watching this video and curious what you use for CAT cable? Do you have a preference as far as brand? What about Cat5 verses Cat6? Thanks!
@thesoundcouple2 жыл бұрын
Hi Joel - great question that I don't have a clean answer for! Bottom line, they tell us to ditch the big expensive analog bulky snake because digital is the way to go! But over time, you learn or are told....well, can't trust that brand, we have seen issues with this brand, the other brand isn't to spec....Frankly, it pisses me off how disorganized this all is and that it's not clearer to the user....at the end of the day, I am pretty certain we have way exceeded our investment in Cat5 cables over an analog snake. Currently, we are using a PreSonus cat 5 for our 100 ft. and have invested in ProCo cat 5. If you are using PreSonus gear, they publish a list of cables that work with their gear (this is where we found the ProCo) support.presonus.com/hc/en-us/articles/360031841952-Ethernet-Cables-for-AVB-Guide We have invested in cables off of Amazon that have served us well, mostly for EarMix's, but don't expect much sympathy from support if things don't work well.

@@thesoundcouple Thanks Bart! I haven't found any recommendations for Allen and Heath mixers (except to use quality, shielded CAT6e). For my 150 footers, I bought West Penn. Costly, but pretty heavy duty. Figured they'd stand up to foot traffic and hard usage. Also bought some shorter ProCo CAT6e. One thing I decided to do was to have 2 CAT cables in my FOH bundle. I was doing a side stage a few years back. Diamond Rio was playing the main stage. About 3 songs into their show, they lost all FOH audio. Turned out the CAT cable to the FOH mixer crapped out. The worst part was, all cables to FOH were buried in the dirt below the audience! Luckily the audio provider had more CAT cable, but they had to run it all the way around the crowd! Got me thinking that I don't EVER want to be put in THAT position! Here's to a great year of shows! Hope your calendar is filling up as nicely as mine!

@robfriedrich2822 Жыл бұрын
I can say, how I work. I have to do with keyboard players who use to layer the sounds, often piano with pads and much effect. These sounds are less impressive in Mono on the one hand, on the other hand it wouldn't be any problem, when the audience gets only the left or right channel. Since digital multicore, we have the option to feed it non balanced. Some input section has combined XLR jack inputs, so you could use some guitar cables, or it's XLR only, so you need adapter cables and if there's a distance or the need to split the signal, I would use a DI. There are 19" DI with 4 channels too.
