The worst part, is the anime doesn't fully exemplify the horror that Subaru feels in that moment. We only see that he suffers for a little bit, but in the novels, he feels his heart being squeezed for a long, long time. That's why he's so frantic when he comes out, because he literally doesn't know if or when the pain will stop.

Season 2 Subaru is aware of how deep contracts are, all the rules that are meant to be abided by when partnering with a spirit, and had Beatrice's emotional outburst hit him full force after he'd just seen her get murked by you know who without many results on her end. From his perspective, there was WAAAAY too much going on for him to just nonchalantly accept a lifetime bond with someone he didn't think he could truly help.

In one of the scenes of Trial by Present Subaru has seen Beatrice crying at his broken body, as she said "Why? Even though I knew you were not that person, why?" Subaru refused to be "the one" for her. That would mean accepting that he was the one making her wait, the reason she got hurt so much. I wish I could spoil how he got her accept a contract in S2, but that part is so incredibly moving I want you to see it for yourself. I'll just say it was a lot similar to this episode.

spoilers obvi if anyone hasnt watched season 2 the reason subaru is hesitant and doesn't immediately make the contract is that he is under the impression that 'that person' is someone echidna specifically had in mind, and that who they were would be obvious enough, or that there would at least be some sort of criteria that would have to be fulfilled to be 'that person' which is why Beatrice asks primarily to be killed unless he can 'become' that person. it's implied that there's something he actually has to do to become it. that's why it's a big reveal when it turns out that echidna truly doesn't know, and that it's entirely Beatrice's choice after all (which beatrice herself, again, is not aware of)

Episodes 7/8 are by far my favorite 2 episodes in the mansion arc. I think they do a better job of summing up Subaru's character than many episodes that come before or after. Episode 7 in particular: Subaru has just died to Rem's flail, and he's terrified. He knows that if he dies again... he may not make it back. As far as he knows, he only has 3 lives for sure at each checkpoint, so his next death could be his last. He's filled with distrust, not sure who is out to get him: he LIKED Rem, considered a friend, and she murdered him in cold blood. He tries to reach out to Emilia, but he can't even do that, but beyond that... he can't talk to ANYONE. He's truly at his wits end with nothing he can do, completely alone. So, for the first time... he gives up on saving everyone. He just tries to save himself. He essentially defaults to his resting pulse, selfishness. Completely counter to episode 6, he begs Beatrice to protect him, forgoes interacting with ANYONE in the Mansion and literally hides until the morning. When he leaves the Forbidden Library... he's so relieved. He did it, he survived, and it was THAT EASY. All he had to do was... nothing. But of course, it isn't that simple. Because of his inaction, Rem has died. She didn't die in the other timelines, and she died in exactly the same way he did. It's not a leap to assume that she died in his place, and as he can't talk, suspicion naturally falls on him. His relief crumbles around him; even if he survived, it's not like he can go on living in the mansion like this. So... he runs, as far and as fast as his feet can carry them until he can't hear Ram's screams anymore. Torn up inside, he runs until he reaches the cliff and realises... what if it ends? Sure, it might be his last life, but if he survives the fall by 'restarting'... he can undo all his mistakes. His odds aren't great of surviving, but he can truly run away from his problems. Leave them behind in another life. And if he dies... he dies. He's so far gone, from his perspective, that would be another way of running. Selfishly, he walks up to the cliff... and he can't do it. He can't throw himself off. The fear of the pain and emptiness of dying stops his feet, and he falls to his knees, helpless. After confronting Betty and remembering the twins holding his hands though, it's a different story. He realizes they DID care for him, that they're GOOD PEOPLE who reached out to help a stranger in need, just like Emilia did in his first life. There's clearly a reason why Rem killed him, another reason she died in his place: without knowing those reasons, does it make any sense to jump to conclusions? When faced with Ram's tear streaked face, he feels himself filled with strength that had abandoned him before; he DOES care about them. He doesn't want them to suffer, he enjoyed those peaceful days at the mansion... but more than that, he learned how amazing the people he spent those days with truly were. To simply run away and accept death so he didn't have to face them, how could he bring himself to do that? You guys hit the nail on the head; to live in this new reality, sure of his survival and letting Rem's death stand... it would be the harder route. The more painful route. So what's so wrong with risking his life? Taking the easy way out that will make their lives better? Subaru, who couldn't throw himself off the cliff to regain his own happiness, does it gladly to save the people he grew to care about. He does it without hesitation. Where selfishness failed, his heroism prevailed. Saving Rem is now something only he can do, and if it means risking his life, it's a small price to pay. THAT is Natsuki Subaru, the hero.

Ram crying over Rem really becomes so much more important with Season 2. It's wild, how that gets more weight later. Subaru remembering the faint feeling of Ram and Rem holding his hands during his first death is also a sweet little detail. It shows they cared during the first loop.

Episode 7 has a side story called “wrath if” it’s pretty much what would have happened if Subaru didn’t kill himself. Ram would have hunted him down and in order to survive he killed* Ram by crushing her head. At that point he developed multiple mental illnesses. And with his power to comeback to life and the knowledge he gains from each death he became the leader of a criminal organization. 2 years later he came back to the mansion and brutally killed everyone with a crazy yet sad smile on his face. Ps. This man died many times in this side narrative and became the villain in his own story. I suggest reading the side stories after watching the whole series, to better appreciate the path that Subaru choose.

Now that I've actually thought about it, I like Re:Zero because it reminds me of the 'good' seasons of Game of Thrones (or all the books). In those seasons people are held accountable to their behavior and action. If you do something stupid in front of the wrong dude, you're probably going to die. Whether or not you were aware of the problem is outside of the equation. Return by Death is the saving grace for Subaru where you just flat out die in GoT.

I think the best moment of this episode was in Rem's bedroom. They even made it in slow-mo. Even though Subaru cared for this people, even though Emiliaa vouched for him and Beako was protecting him, the pressure, fear and stress just took over. That weakness is what makes Subaru special, and shows how tall is the hurdle he has to face.

The sad thing is that it gets worse, the amount of humiliation Subaru goes through us ridiculous. He doesnt even get stronger like other mcs. He stays weak. His only power is restarting to his last check point after dying and being able to change the outcome and flow of events which is broken but he isnt actually strong enough to do something on his own. The common knight could kill him and half the time he acts pathetic. The reason this story is so good is because it shows how Subaru is strong through his words and actions. He himself is weak af but is capable of taking down monsters even the white whale because he can gain allies. I like him alot but still it is annoying to never see him have like a power up and like use satellas power and just overpower everyone and acting like an epic bad ass.(I actually havent finished the entire story but I dont think he does)

Several years later but there’s different stories written by the author that takes place in different universes where Subaru went insane from the trauma he got from all his death. Each version becomes evil and become super powerful. There was even one version who got trained by Reinhardt and then got trained to use magic by echidna and then turned evil and somehow managed to turn Reinhard evil as well and have Reinhard join him. There was another version of Subaru who gained immense levels of fire magic and literally roasted the entire city Mc got isekaid to etc.

One thing that’s kind of overlooked in the anime is that there is no time in between his death and restart. So all the pain he feels when he dies, his mind doesn’t catch up completely and he still feels the lingering pain for a while.

"Why are you looking so deep into the story" it's an allegorical example of saying that making big decisions comes with big consequences and as is Subaru's way he chooses to buck trend and fate and whatever and wants to 'save everyone' as in wanting to be friends with the Blue Oni and the Red Oni and damn the consequences because they're good people. it's not that hard... and technically yes, he does restart whenever he tells someone about Return by Death, it's a bit of a soft reset though as Satella crushes his heart to punish him for telling others and then takes him back to immediately before he died when she crushes his heart.
