I think tracks like "Phoenix" and "Big Neon Glitter" are bigger showcases of Duffy's sound. Equally pivotal to his sound round this time was of course the hollow-body Gretsch. Other people using a twin setup of JC120/AC30 in recent years include Simon Hinkler (the Mission) and Christian Savill (Slowdive). The Edge used to use a JC120 in some songs, as did Bono - round about 1983. During that period there were more JC120s (3) on a U2 stage than there were AC30s (2). Oh... and me.

I read an interview with Billy where he was saying that when he was getting back into the AC30 he contacted Vox and they brought out two to where they were rehearsing and he was thinking they were bringing either their hardwired amps or a UK made AC30, so when he plugged in and loved the tone that was his thinking BUT when he looked at the amp a little closer he was blown away that they were neither as they were both the Chinese versions! He claims he plays the Chinese ones but who knows other than him.

@@CIRCLEOFTONE btw you can get a Roland JC40 nowadays but they still have a pricey tag to match. A shame since my favourite clean Metallica sound was played on JC 120 (Load/ReLoad era to this day).

Been listening the goat 1994 the Cult album in loop the whole day. How amazing was Astbury with the lírics and Duffy’s guitar tone from another planet. You should analyze that guitar tone. It’s an underrated album but Billy is playing his best.

Thank you for posting. I watched the Electric video as well. I have been a long time Cult fan and like you, played in a cover band back in the day that could have almost been called a Cult tribute band. Didn't have money being a kid so did my best to get the tone out of a Boss HM-2, BF-2, and DD-2. Billy has done a number of rig rundowns on his 3 amp setup and what I am wondering is where with that set up is his overdrive tone coming from. I am thinking likely from his pedals rather than the amps. To run into an AC30, Marshall or Friedman, and JC-120, it seems like you would need to set the tube amps on the verge of breakup and then hit a pedal. What are your thoughts?
@CIRCLEOFTONE
@CIRCLEOFTONE 3 жыл бұрын
Billy has gone with more distortion live than what is on the album. The crunch is probably just the JCM800 but I'm speculating.

The ‘Love’ album was solely the Roland JC-120 with a Boss SD-1 providing all the drive and then the Boss analog delay and.flanger. No Vox or Marshall used then.

I read,by Billy himself somewhere..I know it sounds like one of those random comments. you hear on the internet. The BF 2 came shortly after,,maybe more reliable for live use and he likes to be able to replace pedals easily...The actual Flanger used on Sanctuary was a Guyatone.. I'm trying to find evidence but effing can't..So yes it sounds like a random comment on the Internet...He also inherited pedals when Jamie Stewart joined ,who had been a guitarist before.. I know there was a Phase 100 in that lot..About the Electric stuff..There is footage of Billy doing the early Electric stuff and on that,it looks like he is using a Tubescreamer as a boost..Doesn't mean that is on the records though..I think the Les Paul he first had when doing Electric was a Sunburst Standard,but when he saw Slash using one.. He decided against it.. Ah !! Here is the Sunburst Les Paul.. I watched this at the time and not long after went and bought the Album.. :) kzbin.info/www/bejne/a5KYY4aDq5mhptk
