Having been fascinated with the Citi Golf story for a long time, I decided to travel to South Africa and met up with bunch of enthusiasts and Volkswagen Historian John Lemon.
This is the unlikely story of a small car that was so loved by the nation it lived a new life of 25 years, and beyond as it lives on on the streets of South Africa and in the hearts of its people.

I was raised in a 1990 "CTI" then my parents bought a new one in 2005 and another new one in 2008 then in 2009 or 2010 my father bought number 754 of the last 1000, drove it from Sasolburg to Benoni and parked it. It drives around the block once in 3months and is currently on 180km. Still has new car smell inside. I also have a 1978 1500 automatic that I use once a month on a friday. Pretty much part of who I am as a person.

This is the best representation of the mk1/citi Golf ever❤️🥺 I've been in love with this car since a toddler and I'm proud to be the owner of a beautiful Tenacity 1.4i 2009 spec ,I'm actually the second owner of the car which is very rare these days , I actually almost sold it a few days ago , but I couldn't, this car is iconic and every owner should treasure and keep it 🙏

My first car was a CTI back in 2005. and now I have a awesome rebuilt 2.0i Chico that I saved from the scrap heap. I work as a mechanic at my own shop specializing mainly in mk1 golfs. they are such a pleasure to work with. I just absolutely love citi golfs!

Loved the video. I miss my citi golf. I forgot what kind it was, until this video! I paused on the page with the models, and saw that it was a 1.6 Sonic. Remember the silver dials, the alloy wheels, the 3rd brake light...both my kids came home from hospital in that car.

I never knew about this, even I am a Golf GTI 1 Generation guy had my first GTI which was a 1979, 1600 with 110 BHP and 4 gears. RESPECT guys in SA!

My dad owned a Citi Golf Blues...❤ drove that thing to 500 000kms serviced religiously at Mooi street Vw before they closed down, that was our daily for years, unflortunately he traded it in for a Ford IKON😂😢... i had the pleasure of owning a Vw Fox 1.8 Automatic, i sold it which i regret. Im looking to get a 89 Citi Golf Blue and white keep it for my daughter❤

I had a white Citi Golf in South Africa in the early 90 s . What a reliable, and cheap on petrol car that was . Sadly I left for the USA after that and boy old boy what a mistake that was . 😂 They don’t have them in America.

Bought an Mk1 city Golf 1992. It's red and white. But when taken it for Road worthy. According to VIN it's an Factory Black and White. But what's odd, can't get any information. That VW maked it in black. Only RED , BLUE , YELLOW & PINK.

None of our golf's in SA are 2 doors from the citi to mk8 its a performance car and also a family car. It's catered specifically for South Africans. We love 4doors
