The Cold War saw a competition between the world’s two great powers-the democratic, capitalist United States and the communist Soviet Union. Both sides would fight to have the best technology in space and who could achieve the ‘firsts’.

"America had won the space race" No, the *Soviet Union won the space race.* Achievements: USSR - First artificial satellite (4 October 1957) USSR - First animal in orbit, the dog Laika (3 November 1957) USSR - First firing of a rocket in Earth orbit (2 January 1959) USSR - First impact into another world, that is the Moon (13 September 1959) USSR - First plants and animals to return alive from Earth orbit (19 August 1960) USSR - First human spaceflight with Yuri Gagarin as the first man in space (12 April 1961) USSR - First planetary flyby (Venus) on 19 May 1961 USSR - First space walk performed by Alexei Leonov (18 March 1965) USSR - First soft landing on another body (the Moon) and first photos from another body (3 February 1966) USSR - First impact into another planet (Venus) on 1 March 1966 USSR - First artificial satellite around another body (the Moon) on 3 April 1966 *USA* - First human on the Moon and first space launch from a celestial body (20 July 1969) USSR - First lunar rover (23 November 1970) USSR - First space station (19 April 1971) USSR - First soft Mars landing and first signals from Mars surface (2 December 1971) In terms of relevancy, first Satellite, plant, animal, man, woman, and contact with other planets, in comparison with a person walking on the moon for 21 hours, the Soviet achievements had a larger impact on the world today. *I'm American. +Marco PLATIN yeah and i've got evidence of the spy's who sent the information to them too. Gustav Guellich and Friedrich von Boetticher, they opened my mailbox and looked in my mail and even stole reports. Friedrich von Boetticher sent a four-page report to the Abwehr in 1936 Gustav Guellich apparently was at Rosewell and saw a launch of an A series rocket himself he also gave a large report to the Abwehr including critical information about fuel mixtures and an engine Cooling jacket.........a cooling jacket that just so happened to end up in the V-2. sources -Hitler's Spies: German Military Intelligence in World War II. -Rocket Man: Robert H. Goddard and the Birth of the Space Age. -The Game of the Foxes, Ladislas Farago, 1972, although I have yet to find any further evidence that the Germans spied on my work the likely hood is extreme, since like the Cooling Jacket my innovative 3D gyroscopic stabilizer and Control vanes in my L series also ended up in the V-2. You know, the US could have had a rocket program of their own if they had listened to me about value of rockets in the future, and if they did our rocket program would have been far ahead of the Germans since I was the one with the real progression and real talent.

All those USSR achievements were just for the idea of it. Not that they continued for kong. The first object on the moon was a small rocket that was made to juuuust make it there. The first man in the space was only in it for 1 hour. Same for the first woman. The first dog in space died as the Commies didn't want to spend what was necessary to actually complete the mission and thus the spacecraft was left to burn up. The first orbit was outta nowhere and even then the US did a longer and better orbit. The first space station was made after the space race ended.

Also, it's interesting how America claims they 'won' the space race :P Not going to deny that Apollo 11 was the greatest technological feat in the history of mankind, but they kinda kept moving the goalposts, as the Soviets consistently kept beating them with the first satellite, then the first man in space, the first spacewalk, etc. etc.

The Mars missions were failures lol. The first rover crashed on landing and the second lost transmission after 20 seconds. That's like sending a rocket with an animal inside and it crashing on the moon and saying "Hey it's the first animal on the moons!"

The first space station was made after the space race ended

Two runners start the race. One quickly rushes forward, the second after a couple of seconds begins to run after him. The gap is getting bigger and bigger. Then the second runner turns onto the sidepath, takes a ribbon from his pocket and pulls it between 2 trees. Then he calls the all the journalists to him, crosses the ribbon and shouts to the first runner that he won because finish line was here.

USA: I won the Space Race! I got a human on the Moon first! USSR: Dude, I got all these other achievements before you. USA: My achievement is way greater than any of yours. USSR: Quantity has a quality of its own. Getting the first human on the Moon was not exactly a race, since it wasn't a particularly high Soviet priority in the first place. The Soviets had a preference for unmanned missions, as they are way more economical, and had already done an unmanned Moon landing before the Apollo 11 mission. The actual added scientific gains from a manned Moon landing were probably not that great, so scientifically speaking, it's a rational use of resources not to prioritize it overly. Still, the prestige and propaganda value of the Apollo 11 mission for the USA was immense. Doing a manned moon landing would probably have been worth it for the Soviet Union simply because of that, to forestall that and thus land an effective killing blow in the Space Race, a finishing move. Except that then the USA would probably have gone for a manned Mars landing at ridiculous expense and used it to claim victory in the Space Race.
