I think you understand the concept of a nation and the principles of democracy, where individuals are united by shared values and governance, rather than solely by familial or tribal ties. This idea-central to the concept of a free, independent nation-is rooted in Western political philosophy. Some may struggle to fully grasp this due to limited exposure to education or lack of experiences/travel, they perhaps don't see shared goals, their thinking never been challenged etc or maybe since childhood they ve been told they either a victim or a villain, you're either a colonizer or colonized, and on the one hand, you're a bad person who's perhaps got ill-gotten gains or privilege or whatever. and you should fight to take back what's yours (I personally know one). I'm not sure which message is actually more damaging to young people. We need to try and bring up a society of people who genuinely believe that they can make a difference in their own lives.

Someone please help educate me as to how this bill is bad for maori? I myself love the culture and the people. Born and bred in NZ and have a small amount of Maori running through my blood. I have been reading a lot but all I can generally find is "this is what the bill will do to maori" etc etc. But, I'm not actually finding HOW the bill will do those things to maori.
@DelaSalemomo
@DelaSalemomo Күн бұрын
In short, it isn't. It's just the small elite minority are lying to the public saying that the principles bill will "rewrite" the treaty, whereas in the bill itself, it states it will uphold and respect the treaty and also the Treaty of Waitangi Act of 1975. It literally just states that there is to be one government (the one that is voted in) and that all will be equal under the law and said government has the right to create laws. The main argument against the bill is they are wanting equity, rather than equality. Maori will probably lose alot of the preferential treatment they receive with Healthcare, Dental, Education, Scholarships etc.. and have to be on the same level playing field as everyone else that call NZ Aotearoa home. Hope this helps.

the main point is its removing the part about moari being allies with the crown, moari agreed to let the crown setup a goverment if they also had a say. a key point in the treaty was guarantee of moari protection of there lands, this part was as you know broken and why tribes got some money. act founders have tried to sell large fresh water supply's off to china but moari got in the way. this change will mean moari will have no extra say on the sale of land. like everything its always about money.

Now that I'm older I can see how even less fortunate people of other ethnicities arent afforded these same priviledges, becuase they don't meet the criteria. Agreed, second time voting ACT and I haven’t regretted it, National is unreservedly better than Labour but are in a sense Labour lite, to me ACT represents more what a centre right party should look like but unless the party grows or National has a distinct change and leans back to the right of centre real POSITIVE change will never really be effected. I think our country needs to reduce its reliance on China and improve relations with America. We need to build back some self reliance as much as we can at least.

Look at the latest NCEA results - kaupapa Māori schools are showing the highest rates of achievements across the board. But you're partially right, the mainstream education system has clearly failed in some respects, since so many people living in this country lack knowledge of this nation's history or basic social sciences- but the good news is it's never too late to learn! Maybe while you're at it you can learn how to make an argument without relying on offensive and derogatory slangs :)

@@rinakh2477 The Devil is in the detail - when I read through the report that talks about kaupapa Māori schools having higher rates of achievement - the subjects in which they get those higher rates tell an interesting story: "The report said the six subjects with the most credits reported for students in kaupapa Māori schools were English, Maths, Physical Education, Te Ao Haka, Te Reo Māori, and Te Reo Rangatira." It is wonderful to see English and Maths in that list - but where is Biology, Physics, Chemistry. The fact that Maths scored highly, but Physics did not makes me curious and one wonders whether or not stats are being massaged to tell a desirable narrative.

KZbin keeps deleting this comment, these are the original translations of the treaty and sir Apirana Ngata's take on it plus abit of its history but anyway enjoy reading Here is the english translation and sir Apirana Ngata's take on it The text of Te Tiriti o Waitangi / the Treaty of Waitangi The Treaty of Waitangi as signed in 1840 was an agreement between the British Crown and over 500 Maori chiefs. The terms of the Treaty are contained in three simple articles, which Sir Apirana Ngata, a prominent lawyer, and politician for 30 years, stated in his iconic booklet published in 1922 “The Treaty of Waitangi”: “The first article states, The Chiefs assembled including Chiefs not present at the assembly hereby cede absolutely to the Queen of England for ever the government of all of their land. The second article states, The Queen of England confirms and guarantees to the Chiefs and Tribes and to all the people of New Zealand the full possession of their lands, their homes and all their possessions… The third article states, Her Majesty the Queen of England extends to the Natives of New Zealand Her Royal Protection, and imparts to them all the rights and privileges of British subjects.” The Treaty of Waitangi was drafted in English by James Busby, the first British Resident of New Zealand, under the instructions of Captain William Hobson, who had been tasked by Lord Normanby, (Britain’s secretary of state for the colonies), to gain freely given Maori recognition of British sovereignty over New Zealand. The final English draft was translated into Maori by missionary Henry Williams and his son Edward, who were fluent te reo speakers, having lived amongst the tribes for 17 years. Henry then had a crucial role in explaining it to the chiefs who met Captain Hobson at Waitangi on 5 February. The terms of the Treaty are contained in three simple articles. The texts herein are James Busby’s February 4 text and Te Tiriti, the Maori language text. Te Tiriti was the only version present on the 6 February 1840, and was the text signed by the vast majority of chiefs around the country. The Maori language text is virtually identical in all respects to the James Busby final draft, except for the date, and the insertion of the word ‘maori’ in Article third. Busby February 4, 1840, draft (commonly known as the Littlewood Treaty) Article first The chiefs of the Confederation of the United Tribes and the other chiefs who have not joined the confederation, cede to the Queen of England for ever the entire Sovreignty [sic] of their country. Article second The Queen of England confirms and guarantees to the chiefs and the tribes and to all the people of New Zealand, the possession of their lands, dwellings and all their property. But the chiefs of the Confederation of United Tribes and the other chiefs grant to the Queen, the exclusive rights of purchasing such lands as the proprietors thereof may be disposed to sell at such prices as may be agreed upon between them and the person appointed by the Queen to purchase from them. Article third In return for the cession of their Sovreignty [sic] to the Queen, the people of New Zealand shall be protected by the Queen of England and the rights and privileges of British subjects will be granted to them. Signed, William Hobson Consul and Lieut. Governor. Now we the chiefs of the Confederation of United Tribes of New Zealand assembled at Waitangi, and we the other tribes of New Zealand, having understood the meaning of these articles, accept them and agree to them all. In witness whereof our names or marks are affixed. Done at Waitangi on the 4th of February, 1840. This is the maori translation Ko te tuarua Ko te Kuini o Ingarani ka wakarite ka wakaae ki nga Rangitira ki nga hapu - ki nga tangata katoa o Nu Tirani te tino rangatiratanga o o ratou wenua o ratou kainga me o ratou taonga katoa.
