Steve Winwood. Mulit-instrumentalist and soulful singer. One of the greatest British blues rock pop artists ever. Was in Traffic, Blind Faith, a long, successful solo career. In the R&R Hall of Fame. Worth diving into his catalogue, fellas.

By the time this was recorded, he'd already performed with Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Howlin' Wolf, B. B. King, Chuck Berry, and Bo Diddley. He was for real, a prodigy like Stevie Wonder. He'd been in bands since 8 years old.

The singer is Steve Winwood, at about 16 or 17 years old. Spencer Davis is quite a bit older, guitarist. Steve's brother 'Muff' Winwood on bass. Peter York on drums. Formed in 1963 when Steve was 16 (b May 12 1948). Last big hit, 'I'm A Man' in 1967 covered by Chicago on their first album 'Chicago Transit Authority'. Both deserve a listen. Cheers ✌

Steve Winwood is an icon of icons. He was famous by 14 yrs old, when he joined this band. As a teen American Blues musicians touring in the UK would hire him to back them. He'd been playing piano in British pubs since he was 8 yrs old, with his dad and brother. He a multi-instrumentalist, legendary singer and has written some incredible songs. He was in a supergroup, Blind Faith, with Eric Clapton & Jimi Hendrix sought him out to play on Voodoo Chile with him, and Jimi wanted to be in a band with Steve. He's worked with everyone & is universally respected. His bands are this one, Traffic, Blind Faith & a huge solo career in the 80s where he won a few Grammy's. You probably know the one with Chaka Khan, 'Higher Love'. Keep digging down the hole with Steve. Love you guys.

This is from a movie, that's why the band is wearing pajamas. That's Steve Winwood, you reacted to him when you did the band Traffic. Spencer Davis Group came first, then Traffic. Steve is ultra-talented! Every Little Bit Hurts, It Hurts Me So, Let Me Down Easy, Keep On Running, Hey Darling, I'm A Man are just a few tunes to get you started on young Steve's (he was 14 when he joined the Spencer Davis Group) first band. Enjoy!

Thanks for that, never heard it before. I knew Steve Winwood was a great singer, but didn't realize he could channel Ray Charles like that, and I think Ray's one of the greatest ever. Crazy. I heard an interview w/ Chris Blackwell, who got Spencer Davis Group their record deal, and he said he heard a white kid that sounded like Ray Charles when he discovered them. Now I get it and believe it.

Good call on the Ray Charles influence…that is undeniable. There was a rumor that Jimi Hendrix wanted to ask Stevie to join his band but was afraid to ask. There is a clip of a Mitch Mitchel interview where. He says ‘any time, any place we would have jumped at the chance to have steve in the band!’. Paraphrasing …but what a compliment.
