We go just outside of Jaffna to see how the spicy dish in the country is made and challenge ourselves to each finish even just a small bowl. Jaffna Odiyal Kool is a type of Crab and Seafood Soup, and reminded me of a Cajun Seafood Soup or Stew but 100x spicier! Five out of Six of the people at our table couldn't handle the heat, including the Sri Lankan guys!
See how the dish is cooked, what local Sri Lankan ingredients including a few Jaffna only curries go into the preparation and see how it tastes! But first we'll see how Sri Lakans in Jaffna used to live in the village and how they would cook. We even taste fresh Palm Toddy for the first time!

I have visited Sri Lanka numerous times including Jaffna. One can sample a delicious variety of food all over the island. While Jaffna does not have the hotels and food choices like the rest of the island, the tasty local cuisine does stand out. For me the culinary highlights were the Jaffna style crabs, mutton curry and squid. The squid is cooked with a gravy or dry without the gravy. The latter was my favorite. I have not tasted anything like it anywhere in the sub-continent. I also loved the sea food soup you had but it was not as spicy and had different vegetables like cassava, jackfruit seeds etc... tasted somewhat like a spicy seafood chowder.

Jaffna mutton curry is the best 😋 it’s all about fresh meat and Jaffna curry powder. Also, it is common to use cassava and jackfruit seeds in the Kool.

Hey guys....another wonderful video. Here is some breakdown and explanations for my knowledge. The green drinks you guys had is made of Mayom fruit. It's sour and sweet. Not as tamarind. That fruit you can eat as is too. The grinding stones you guys have explore, the last one to take the husk off the rice. Now we all have new machines. For the kool, normally they put kasava and jack fruit seed is must. Because it's takes time to cook, then slowly add the rest. To make it thick in Chinese cooking use corn starch, but our kool use Odiya ma ( Odiyal is a hard, edible snack made from palmyra palm tubers (Palmyra sprouts). Generally, it is split into two and dried until it gets hard. Odiyal can be prepared in another form called Pulukodiyal (புழுக்கொடியல்). Pulukodiyal is prepared by boiling and then drying. It is used to produce Pulukodiyal flour) Hope this explanation can help some of the viewers. Cheers 🍻

Johnnny, that you tasted toddy made of Palmurah tree which is well famous in Jaffna & northern Srilanka... When you travel from Chilaw to Galle in coastal area you may find Toddy made from Coconut tree. There is a another type of Toddy you may find around Sinharaja forest area ( including Mathugama, Agalawatha) it is made from Palm "Kithul"tree. Try toddy with Boiled Manioc (Tapioca )and Wild boar curry
