When I first got into resin casting about 2 years ago, I purchased Vevor's 10 gallon pressure pot because it was the cheapest 10 gallon pressure pot I could find. Sometimes you're in for disapointment when buying cheap tools, but that wasn't the case with the Vevor pressure pot. Fast forward to today... Vevor reached out asking what product I would be interested in, and without hesitation I requested the same pressure pot. I guess they were phasing out their 10 gallon pots, but their 8 gallon pots are half the price of the 10 gallon pots and worth every cent. The pots are intended for paint pressure applications, so used @JakeThompson 's video as a guide for updating them for resin casting: • How to convert ANY Pai... The Vevor pressure pots seem to be very well made, and in my experience they have been very reliable. If you're looking to save $$$ you really can't beat that.

Now, about this project... This manzanita burl was staring at me from the shelf for quite a while. It was the type of gnarly piece that has tons of interesting characteristics, so many of which are, sadly but inevitably, reduced to dust. The struggle of working with pieces like this is that the majority of spikes and protrusions, although interesting and dramatic, must ultimately be sacrificed for the sake of the larger form hiding somewhere in the overall form of the burl. The other problem is determining how much resin to use or, perhaps more accurately in my case, to abuse. Keeping the majority of the gnarly features attached to the burl meant that I had to make a larger resin pour in a larger bucket. Yay, more silly string! Perhaps if I had known exactly how the final piece would look like, I would have been able to minimize epoxy waste and optimize the casting. But I'm not a prophet, and I don't like to remove options by chopping away too much of the burl ahead of time. The wood always takes precedence over the resin, and the focus should never be on the resin but on the wood itself. The resin is purely there to enable the wood to be all it can be or at least to enable the wood to be more than what it could have been without the stabilization prowess of plastic. In the end, I was going for a more curvy version of a hollow form with slender base, a well-defined neck and shoulders. This piece may eventually be for sale on my website, but if you are interested in purchasing it before I put a price tag on it, please contact me through my website: www.adamsenwoodcraft.com/contact

This is why I don't do resin bowls anymore. The chips can injure you, it dulls your gouges quickly, and it takes about 5 times longer to turn because you take off so little at a time. It looks very nice eventually, but unless you have someone willing to spend big dollars on your finished project, you don't get much out of the process but a large mess. I prefer to reveal the mysteries inside the wood and work with imperfections.

'Stunning' could very well be an understatement for this fine work. It's surprising to me how you took an ugly, old, spiked burl and converted it into that masterpiece of fine craftsmanship. Your artistic ingenuity and creativity never cease to amaze me, David, as my respect for your trade increases tenfold every instance I gaze at another one of your beautiful creations. Keep-up the extra-fine work, and thanks for sharing this experience with us.

David, I'm blown away by the exquisite balance and skill in this piece. The chatoyance you've created in the resin mimics but doesn't overpower the figured chatoyance in the manzanita, and (as always) the vase has an exquisite curve. Stunning!

Exceptional craftsmanship, beautiful creation. The burl is a beautiful piece of wood, I’m curious as to why black is always used in wood turning projects. I’m old fashioned, I like a beautiful natural wood. It says so much about the growth. Your an exceptional artist.
@DavidAdamsen

Thanks! Well I can’t speak for everyone, but I like black epoxy because it doesn’t distract too much from the burl. It almost acts like a shadow whereas colored and vibrant epoxy tends to compete with it. I’ve done both, and both have their purposes.

Stunning as ever David! I am now never surprised that you can take something that people would throw away and find its beauty. And the shine was exquisite. I would ask you if you've ever waited for a short while for the resin to cure before pouring in order to keep the colours from merging? I've seen that done by other resin users and the results are outstanding! You really see the separation of the individual colours more. No criticism of your piece at all. I would buy that in a heartbeat if I had the money!😍

Thanks very much! Yes, I have tried delaying the pour to get more color separation, but my shop is not very well temperature controlled. These past summer months end up curing deep pour epoxy in 20% of the time it normally takes. I will definitely try it more though.

I would prefer a smaller proportion of the pearl and holographic to black pigment but I really like the look of black resin contrasting with the natural wood color. I've watched many "turning" videos where the woodworker chose blue or green or something colored resin but black or clear -- being a more 'natural' color -- looks the best to me.
