Here is a very special railway video showing what goes on behind the scenes when the Down "Highlander" Caledonian Sleeper train (which on this occasion started off as a 14 coach train from London Euston) gets split into 3 separate trains at Edinburgh Waverley station between the hours of 3:50am & 4:50am, while all the passengers are fast asleep.
The rear 7 coaches (which becomes the front 7 coaches after reversing at Edinburgh) is the portion that's bound for Inverness. The middle 5 coaches is the portion that's bound for Aberdeen. And finally, the front 2 sleeper coaches (which becomes the rear 2 coaches after reversing at Edinburgh) is the portion that's bound for Fort William. However, 2 additional coaches are added to the Fort William portion (I.E. a lounge coach & a seated coach) this is because, in practice, the down "Highlander", to start off with, normally has 16 coaches and Platforms 1 & 15 at London Euston station (which are the 2 designated platforms for the Caledonian Sleeper trains) cannot accommodate more than 16 coaches which is why lounge and seated carriages for the Fort William portion are added later on at Edinburgh Waverley.
