I mean, this isn't that unreasonable. Pretty much every source was based on hearsay. They noticed a character called Spongeboy, likely trademarked, and didn't look into it too much. Someone could've said "a mop or a sponge or something" in the original conversation, and it just got passed down in a game of telephone. Then when people started recalling it, the rumored version took precedent in their minds so that's what they went with. Nobody really cared enough to check for the original reason, probably because the original reason, itself, was somebody noticing something and mentioning it in a meeting. Of course no one would remember the exact conversation from so long ago very well. I totally think it's the Flaming Carrot comic that did it.

I don't know if the doodle bob being born from a pencil was intentional, but either way, a pencil being one of the main concerns that lead to the name change makes having his evil doppelganger a drawing even more hilarious. The sky hook do feel like a direct poke at the Flaming Carrot though, which I think is a nice tough and fit in the Spongebob universe seamlessly.

Hello, I live in Iceland and I want to correct something. "Svampur Sveinsson" does not mean SpongeBoy, it means "Sponge, Son of Boy". For context of the "Sveinsson" part, the last names in Iceland are not based on family names but based on the name of the father. Thor, Son of Odin is a good example of that naming system. If I had to guess, Google Translate probably led you to believe his name was SpongeBoy over here. Edit: "Sveinn" is a name here in Iceland so it could be "Son of Sveinn" as well.

Interesting, because when I put it in translate, it came back as SpongeBob SquarePants. Hmmmm. But I believe you!

And even if a foreign name did translate to "Sponge Boy" it would still be a completely different trademark and would have no bearing on the English-language name-change, let alone a US name-change. I'm surprised that BLS doesn't understand how trademarks work.
@JrIcify Жыл бұрын
Leif Erikson is another example. His father was Erik Thorvaldson, and Thorvald Asvaldson was his father's father. So I guess SpongeBob's dad is named Boy, and Spongebob's son would be named something like Steve Spongeson.

@@JoaoPedro-ki7ct google TL does have a thing where users can input translations, so sometimes if you put something into google TL it might not give the exact same meaning for the reason of someone adding a translation (and with how big sponge-bob is it looks like that is what happened) what you could do is try translating with different service, yandex TL is one (though does source some translations from google TL), nother is DeepL but is much more limited in the language selection

Happy to see you make another video! I’m fascinated by these half-true, widespread claims. It reminds me of the claim that The Simpsons wasn’t popular in Japan because they have four fingers. Which always felt like a half-truth/lie. There was a recent video essay (by Slio) where he looked into that claim, and interviewed some Japanese fans. Mike Reiss, a Simpsons writer, repeated the four-finger answer in his book. I think people involved in those productions end up repeating these falsehoods because of a game of telephone. They hear it from a person in one department, it gets repeated…that sort of thing. So cool how much research you put into this! Those pencils are gonna end up in the Smithsonian. Edit: Simpson Essay by Slio kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y5XNfKqPnd2Xb7M
The reason why the Simpsons isn't as popular in Japan because it has a more mean sarcastic style of humor than most things in Japan.

this videos super well done! i love the presentation and the spongebob crt, heck seeing you use the real font and even call it by name is really cool cause most spongebob videos dont research that kinda stuff, even the fact that you used the stereo versions of the bfbb music is awesome cause most people dont know those got released, major props, you for sure earned a sub!

I know it's a weird thing to comment on, but your voice work is fantastic. You pause at the perfect times for the perfect amounts of time, and your annunciation is great. You also just have a nice voice in general. Seriously, great stuff.

Fun fact: My first impression of Spongebob was that he looked like Swiss cheese. I couldn't tell what the bloomin' heck Patrick was, as I didn't realize he and Spongebob were meant to be sea creatures until I think it got to a scene where he and Patrick get dehydrated and turn into a photo of a dried-out sponge and dried-out sea star. Also, love your dramatic reading of Flaming Carrot. Are you allowed to do Spongebob impressions in videos? I seem to recall hearing Nickelodeon trademarked his voice. Or is that just stopping Tom Kenny from talking like Spongebob without Nickolodeon getting money or something like that?
@nnewt8445 Жыл бұрын
Even after realising the show takes place in the ocean, I didn’t realise Patrick was a starfish, and thought he was just a generic blobby creature. To me, he always just looks like a paler, cone-headed version of Grimace from McDonald’s.

Holy shit I was not expecting to see Cerebus in a video about SpongeBob. I actually read through some of the first few books earlier this year (which are, in and of themselves, a *hell* of a deep rabbithole) and I remember the story about Flaming Carrot pretty well, but forgot all about Sponge Boy until I saw it again in here. Excellent video.
