It’s completely normal for an Autistic 31 year old to not know how to drive. I went to a school for Autistic adults only for 4 years. One of my friends is 32 and he doesn’t know how to drive. I learned when I was 26. Most people I know still watch kids movies when they come out. I don’t care if preschoolers do it, I think it’s more mature to play with hand puppets, crayons and modeling clay. It’s more original, originality is a form of independence, and independence is adulthood.

I put off doing driving lessons for two years because of a traumatic car accident and then missed the deadline to turn in assignments when I signed up so I got kicked out and just have never gotten around to it. Now I’m in my early 20s without even having a learners license.

you missed that the drivers license expires in 2003 so that means the show more than likely takes place around the first time it aired. which means spongebob is more close around 14 years old at the time

In regards to the actual SpongeBob Squarepants' age, series creator Stephen Hillenburg wasn't very direct regarding these questions. As for Hillenburg's secrecy, it's because he intended for SpongeBob to be ageless in a way. However, that wasn't always the case. According to the Orange County Register, he wanted SpongeBob to be an adult, but Nickelodeon wanted a child character who attended school. As such, a compromise was born by creating Mrs. Puff's Boating School. Change also explains SpongeBob's child-like energy despite navigating many adult tasks.

I hate how people just assumed that the show takes place in 2017, just because of that one episode where he got frozen for 2000 years and he is in 4017. There is a possibility that the 2000 years was a ballpark and he actually got frozen for 2017 years. That or it's this episode in particular that takes place during that date. And if we based by both his DOB and the expiration date on his license, he would have been at least 17 at his oldest. But if we rely on Hillenburg's given age to him that he is 50 in sponge years, he would have been 19.

Spongebob's age being amiguous always meant to me that anyone can relate to him. (in seasons 1-3) people talk down to him and treat him like a kid which makes him more relatable to the child audience, but he can do adult things in order to give him more agency. My headcanon is that Spongebob is at the very least in his early to mid-30s, but has a slight developmental delay, and that's why he's infantilized by the people around him. Clearly he's capable of caring for himself and another living thing, can hold a steady job, and can socialize just fine, but might be higher support needs in other areas like for example: he keeps failing his boating test because maybe Mrs. Puff and her boating school don't provide the right learning environment for him. Additionally, while he doesn't exactly struggle with making friends, he does seem to struggle with picking up on social cues in some situations without help, frenquently misunderstands the implications of certain situations, misinterprets instructions, and is a bit too naive for someone his age, which isn't even his fault necessarily. Because of this, Spongebob is frequently treated like he is younger than he is by his peers even though he is perfectly capable of surviving and even thriving on his own as a grown man. Which, in hindsight, feels a little disrespectful? Like I know it's not that deep or whatever, but it's kind of sad how Spongebob is infantilized when he clearly demonstrates that he's capable of surviving as an adult, and there have been plenty of times throughout the franchise where he's expressed frustration with being treated like a kid and a desire to prove that he can be mature. I honestly feel really bad for him.
