The most terrifying aspect of this episode to me is the fact that Squidward wasn't dreaming or anything like that. He didn't wake up and realize that he was having a dream like many cartoons might do for episode like this one. The ending of this episode implies that this truly happened 💀
@j_the_kid7 ай бұрын
To me the ending is a bit more ambiguous. SpongeBob and Patrick saying it was Squidward who invented jellyfishing is such an absurdity that it makes me think it's not a real event. I mean, how could they possibly ever know that it actually was Squidward who thought jellyfishing to their primitive ancestors millions of years ago? It's impossible that they would know that, hence why I think the ending implies it's not real.

No one came to look for squidward, because he never disappears. At the end of the episode, he goes back to his present day. Question: If Squidward hid in the freezer at a restaurant, where stuff like the patties might be stored, and no one looked for him in 2000 years, then that must mean that no one uses the freezer, so why does no one use the freezer? I always found "the past" very disturbing. As a kid, when I would turn off lights and quickly run up the stairs, I always imagined the prehistoric versions of our friends chasing me. I also wish there was a more consistent timeline/continuity in this show. At the end we can hear Squidward say "I'm going back." It would've been cool if the writers took that line literally. Either making a follow up episode, or making it a 30 minute special. It would also give us a chance to explore the past more. The designs of vegetation and creatures is beautiful in my opinion. Since this was season 1 it wasn't too late to keep the continuity going, oh well. There was an episode a few years back now what Spongebob found a caveman light sponge. It would've been neat if it was THIS caveman sponge, and have a little call back with him meeting Squidward again.

I think this one definitely stood out to a lot of people and this is just a perfect example of art in its prime, there’s no way any SpongeBob episodes in the last 10 to 15 years could grab a kid’s attention the way this episode did. Other honorable mentions with that unsettling factor would be the Glove World episode, the magic conch episode, and even the one where plankton forces SpongeBob to conform to working at the chum bucket was kind of weird in that sense of servitude and struggle with conformity. Show was one of a kind in it’s heyday

This is how I feel, I feel like I’m constantly in darkness, I feel scared and alone but I constantly feel like I’m being watched. I am scared because I can’t see, and I don’t know where I’m going or what I should be feeling or doing, or even how I could even escape. I feel angry because I feel scared because I don’t want to be alone, I don’t want to constantly fear about what would happen next, I don’t want to run away from everything, I want something to be able to see, and I want to know the things that are watching me that I cannot see, I want something to know who I am, I don’t want to constantly fear being watched but to know I am truly not alone. I am scared of losing everyone but I am angry at everyone because they are in the darkness but I cannot see or feel them in any way but I want to.

This was always my favorite episode as a kid! I loved the abstracted dimension squidward was in the most. It always reminded me of my local McDonald’s play place, because the walls were white with rainbow splatter paint and the table tops had a picture of like a million jelly beans. I remember just sitting at the top of the play place and staring at the walls for minutes at a time. Very weird and specific memory, I know, but it was the most liminal, out of body experience I’ve ever had.

That is an episode I've never forgotten. To this day several years later there was this horror like undertone. It was extremely unsettling.

The Alonescape scared me as a child. I interpreted that realm as being post time and realized how much of a curse immortality would be. It easily exceeds the clean dystopia of the future, and the uncanny dark forest of the past.

I did not expect this video to take the turn it did. And I’m greatly impressed. And a bit jealous i couldn’t come up with it myself. But i did want to say that I think in the end you just summed up the key to happiness, although you may not have realized it. “Tomorrow doesn’t exist, and it never has.” I believe that once you accept he uncertainty of tomorrow and mix that with that the past can always be interpreted in every possible way based on your mood in that moment the only thing you can be 100% procent certain of is yourself in the present, the right now, you are only sure of yourself and the thoughts you are currently having. And i think that once you accept that maybe it doesn’t become so scary anymore. Tomorrow doesn’t exist, and maybe tomorrow may never come, but today is right here, today exists. Maybe yesterday existed but yesterday is as much up for debate as is almost any “certainty” philosophy has, but today, right now, does exist. And i think the key to happiness is to sometimes step out of our ever so fastly phased time concept, of deadlines and having a plan for the near and not so near future, and to just take a moment to be only in the now, the right right now, and to just enjoy the moment. That’s what i believe ‘you need to touch some grass” means. Get out of tomorrow, you don’t even need to know who you’ll be tomorrow or what you’ll do tomorrow. All you need to know is that you are here right now, as is the grass, so get in touch with only right now. Sorry for this long text and if you read this fully i hope you too can find your happiness. I genuinely hope for everyone to every once in a while step out of our fast phased society and into the right now and be more happy and maybe more loving towards others.

The idea of living in a prison of your own design... It's something I usually think about and it has never been properly explained until I saw this video and the episode once more. You could want to escape something so much that once you do, you want to go back. Only to realize that what you want to get away from...is exactly what you made for yourself. It's always been a great fear to be interested in. I don't remember exactly being scared of this episode. Maybe a little creeped out, but it always had my deepest interest (probably my favorite episode). Now I know why.

I think the fact that we only see Squidward with SpongeBob and Patrick, in the present, past and future is indicative of the Time Machine just being Squidward’s mind. They’re the only ones around, and in nowhere he misses them. I think everything after he gets locked in the freezer up until he leaves the Time Machine is squidward’s thoughts, as he’s finally alone in the freezer he realises he likes SpongeBob and Patrick

Squidward even being in the Krusty Krab gives me strong sense of liminality, because the restaurant was not well lit and most importantly, it was empty which we weren't supposed to ever see. Gives me goosebumps to this day.

This has always been one of my favorite episodes. Maybe it didn’t unsettle me a whole lot bc I watched so much Courage lmao, but I’ve always been drawn to the bizarre, existential, and absurd. There is another excellent (and long) video about SpongeBob and how it explores those themes throughout the show. It’s from The Local Mangaka and it’s titled “Analyzing Every Squidward Episode (Absurdism, Cynicism, “Obsession and Futility”)

What’s funny is that SB-129 was my first SpongeBob episode, so my introduction to the show freaked me out so much I had to come back and keep watching. Karate Choppers right after this actually also freaked me out with that hot sauce that grew a face. Good times.

The episode where Squidward is dealing with his loneliness is life rn for me and alot of people in my generation. I love over analyzing spongebob episodes, they always have some life lesson that you catch when you grow up, that's probably why I love it and think it's the best cartoon ever created😭

My most fav ep. Idk why. Remembering this as a kid then watching that part of Inside Out about our brain disasembling thoughts really got me thinking that Squidward really just visualize that after going in future and past. Also your channel is so good, I start to binge now. I can't believe you have small subs. Keep it up dude, I know you're gonna blow up.
