The whole idea of our ancestors reminded me of the theory of how most humans have a natural fear of humanoid looking things, like dolls. There's a fanfic idea in there somewhere. Maybe one of the scientists accidentally falls down the hole and the rest decide to climb down to rescue him, but they couldn't detect a bottom nor hear a thump indicating that the scientist hit a bottom. When attempting to climb down the hole, through one way or another (maybe the rope broke or they accidentally let go of the rope), and they fell through multiple horrific tunnels full of screaming souls and storm clouds before being overcome by the color red, _blood_ red. Then they fall down to a very modern looking city down into an alleyway. Or maybe a different idea would be a scientist fell and after a few hours of giving up, they hear his voice begging for help, saying that he's managed to climb back up. They threw a rope and brought him back up... But something was wrong. They were frightened, and he didn't know why they were scared of him... until he looked at hands. They were... different... monstrous even! "What happened to me!? All I remember was screaming, torture, flames, gunshots, pain, blood, darkness and then I was climbing up this hole! Where the fuck was I!? Please help me!" "...Sir... I think you were in hell..." Then they looked at his back. A message was scratched into his back, it said "You think your escape was the end. No, this is only the beginning. Signed, Al." I might have more ideas, but you get the point.

They didn't get anywhere near the Earth's core, which is thousands of miles further down, but they did *probably* go deeper than the depth where an open void could exist longterm, at least without extreme reinforcement. Obviously we don't know this for certain, but the discovery of a natural open space 7.2 miles beneath the Earth's surface would be a major geological find (aquifers aren't actually pools of water in the traditional sense; water suffuses the ground rather than forming an open space). Regardless, one couldn't have existed in the area. Most traditional caverns, as opposed to fissures or lava tubes, are found in sedimentary rather than igneous or metamorphic rock like that found in that part of the Kola Peninsula. Even if it had, the drill didn't have microphones. It may have possibly had seismographs (I'm not sure on that point), but there was nothing really to hear. Rocks are typically quiet. Whatever someone's beliefs about the existence, location, and nature of Hell, this was an urban legend developed by people with a poor understanding of geology. It spread because it both "confirmed" traditional ideas held by certain Evangelical groups, and because it had an Anti-Communist angle that would garner attention in the United States during the late Cold War era. No details from the story are actually true, other than the publicly known existence of the world's deepest excavation.

I think this might be one of those deep rooted fears. One of those primal things reaching back to ancient times. I remember seeing a documentary of some of the oldest primitive bones ever found in a cave. These bones were well preserved at the bottom of a massive pit at the back of a cave that had evidence of habitation. They theorized these primitive pre-humans actually used this place to hide their dead. Evidence we have been doing such things for a long time. Over time places like these could be found all over in ancient culture. Different deep dark places for all sorts of rituals and practices. So it’s not surprising that even in a more modern age we still have these sorts of myths

It's possible we will see advancements in bore hole drilling abilities soon(ish) or in the near future. I've seen some scientists cover this new tech that bores a hole using a totally different method. It uses a high powered laser type device that hardens the walls of the bore hole as it goes.
