There's a lot to do in the garden but none of it could happen until I got some color going! All I could find to buy was pansies so here's how I improvised.

funny, I'm in Atlanta and pansies say nothing but Fall to me. I'm just starting to pull out all the pansies in anticipation of planting some spring/summer annuals !!! and this is why I love the Channel - different ideas, different planting schedules, tons of creativity, and a boat load of inspiration. And, oh, I bought one of the ice scoops at an antique show many years ago - one of the best additions to my gardening tool collection !!!!

I’m with you Erin! I’m Zone 3 (Edmonton, Alberta) and won’t be able to garden in earnest until May so I set out some pots of pansies. They aren’t the most exciting container arrangements but I’ll be damned if they’re not giving me as much joy as my summer containers. I think it’s mostly the gardening withdrawal from a long winter. 😂

I completely understand! Last weekend I picked up half a flat of frizzle pansies. My first time planting pansies ever. Planted up 3 pots that sit on my deck railing & one by the stairs. The crazy bright colours make me so happy. When I walked into the greenhouse at my local nursery I burst out saying “Hello my babies”.

So far, I have focused on positioning all the pots where I want them this year and weeding the front beds. I won't fill the pots until mid-May when most of the flowers start hitting our nurseries. I can't wait to have flowers galore, but in the meantime, there is still clean-up work to do.

Anything that gives you 100% gardening pleasure is a win in my book. Spring begins slowly and then turns into a glorious technicolor show, just like your lovely urn will be. No gardening for me yet - within one week's time we had hail, sleet, hard frost, and lots of hard rain.

Love it!! Did you see how Laura on Garden Answer planted her big pots along her driveway last year? She made a circle/ring out of cardboard and put in the center to create a higher layer or terrace. Filled that with dirt and flowers then planted decorative kale and flowers around the outside of the ring. The ring lifted the center up so it could be seen above the kale. Worked great! Might work well in your urn too. Although I love the red twig basket/nest look. Need a few fake blue birds and bright yellow cardinals to perch on your twigs and sphere. 😊

Garden centres are starting to show their early spring faces now, yesterday we hit 23 Celsius and today is suppose to mirror image that. The magnolias blooms are opening up, trees are showing their green tips. I walk by a house where they actually cut their grass. I live in a 5b/ 6a zone so this is early. This weather is crazy. Thanks for sharing your garden work, we will be starting cleanup with week. 👍❤️🙂

Pansies are the first thing I buy in the spring. They're the first flower that is available and can be outside day and night. Yellow and purple look great together, because on the color wheel they are complimentary colors.

One of my degrees is a BFA in Textiles and one of my classes was ‘Off-Loom’ which is what other people refer to as ‘Basket Weaving’. Trust me when I say it was much more intense than what it sounds. I never took offense when people refer to this as a ‘blow off class’ cuz honestly… they just didn’t know better.

We're in the deep south, so we're getting blooms and have put in most of our vegetable seedlings. I know what you mean about those first bloomers. It's so exciting to see them. The azelea are just finishing up, but they were spectacular this year. We planted them in 17, so they are getting some height. I had someone stop yesterday and asked for some divisions of my coriopsis. I gave her a bunch and hope they bring her much happiness. I know you're not a fan, but I love mine. One of my favorite things to do is walk through the garden and admire all the plants that were pass a longs from family and friends. They make up most of my garden beds. I hope y'all see some warm weather soon. Zone 8a south Mississippi

I do pansies for my front porch pots as soon as I find them . Sometimes end of Match but typically April. I add my willow sticks for vertical interest. And hang a wreath up. That’s my transition from St Patrick’s day, to pansies. Without fail my go to Early spring tradition.

Hi Erin, hey your hair looks fantastic. Nice cut! I also only just ventured out again on Sunday because the weather has been crap. Everyone on KZbin has full spring and we are just getting daffodils. Then I see your place and I say, see? Some of us have to wait. Its coming. My peach buds are opening. I bought pansies after the eclipse yesterday, which is a long story, but suffice to say it was a fantastic time to get early spring bedding because I had the place to myself. I got a flat of pansies, some lacinato kale, an orange tuberous begonia , two purple campanula portenschlaniana (I had to look up how that was spelled), a sweet bay, and a black velvet escargot leaf style rex begonia. I planted the purple/orange and bay in the pot on the driveway, brough the rex begonia inside and left the pansies and kale in the shade on the porch. I can't wait to plant them.

The container looks great. I am in Scotland and lucky enough to have lots of flowers in my garden even now. I have lots of wallflowers hellebores spring bulbs of every colour even some calendula flowering. The fruit trees are all in blossom and the ornamental cherries and white spiraea are glorious. I still intend to do some containers though. I grew lots of drumstick primula a couple of years ago and they are the best addition to a spring garden.

I grew pansies and violas this year with much effort and many more seeds than the plants that actually grew 😅 they’re finally sizing up and starting to bloom but I’m wondering if it was worth it when a can get them so cheaply at the box stores… I wish bulbs would grow well in pots for me, as that’s another option, but they always rot over winter. PS maybe mounding the soil could improve the pansies’ stature!
