They are life long friends, but the war has made them enemies. One word from the man in black would drop the blonde into a Gestapo torture chamber, literally. The blonde is terrified, while the man in black is delightfully amused his close friend would consider betrayal even a remote possibility. Suspicion versus loyalty is an unstable mix.

Actually they look at each others with passionate hatred. The one in SS uniform is half-German half-Dutch, during the initial story of the film during the invasion of Holland he is being dubbed as traitor because of his ancestry. Here he is belittling the blond guy, for not siding with the Nazi Germany.. and yet here he is in the Nazi party. While the blond guy is a spy for the British army & Dutch resistance.

As a Dutchman I have to conclude that this is easily our best film that has ever come out of our country, largely becuz the Dutch film-culture has been severely lacking and most of our most talented directors, cinematographers, actors have all immediately moved abroad especially to Hollywood. Paul Verhoeven is absolutely amazing, so is Jeroen Krabbe and Rutger Hauer.

Verhoeven gives depth to his film that few others can. He's on par with Peter Weir and Denis Villeneuve.

@@Chriskros1984 Alex is the oppertunist and the bad guy because he made the wrong choice afterwards. The irony is that they both think they are fighting for the right cause, but what is the outcome at the end of the film, most of Erik's old friends are dead. In the Dutch warmovie "Pastorale 1943" (1978 ) it is even clearer. In it, Rutger Hauer played an SS man who is the brother of a resistance fighter. - War is hell - .

Ahhh, living in a time when Dutch cinema from decades back is leagues above the quality of Oscar winning movies. Verhoeven even got the sweaty methhead PTSD Eastern Front veteran right. This movie is in the same class as Das Boot.
