@generalcodsworth44173 ай бұрын
It was an inevitability. The old Stanley cups that were boring, functional, amazing drink vessels for hot and cold beverages that you only needed one of because they last forever were designed for a limited market. And by limited, I mean everyone only needs one. In order to keep making money after everyone has a Stanley, they need to sell to people who've already bought one. And the only way to do that is rampant consumerism by making everything the same, but with limited edition colors! Fun fact, this actually already happened with cars in the early days before they started using planned obsolescence. Once everyone had a car that worked and could be maintained forever, (I think it was Ford) realized they could get people to throw out their old car that worked perfectly and buy a new one if the company painted them in limited edition colors before selling. So this isn't even new.
@smalltime03 ай бұрын
@@generalcodsworth4417 lol old cars (especially fords) had a reliability measured in services per mile. Old cars weren't pinnacles of engineering. The 'planned obsolescence' cars that people complain about are usually just more modern cars. It use to be Toyotas in the 80s (you never see those anymore), Yugos in the 70s (communism more like consumerism). The issue with more modern cars (think 90s onwards) is that electronically controlled and regulated systems require more specialist parts and knowledge which makes them ever harder/impossible for the end user to maintain, but come with neat real-world benefits like fuel economy and not producing noxious gasses. What's more relevant to cars is "perceived obsolescence" where the car's key components (engine, powertrain etc) are functionally more or less the same, however differences in body work and aesthetic design result in a product which seems newer and prompts the turnover. I'd argue Audis of all the car brands are the worst offenders here, you can very often get Audis on the bodywork change that are drastically cheaper (even as high as 30%) even though the dealers know they're selling the same car just because the body is different.

Stanley was always a fisherman/hunter brand. Here in Brazil it's always been a farmers' brand because, yes, it does keep the beverages cooler and warmer for longer periods of time. They were really inexpensive until the "agroboys" (as we like to call the rich kids of the farmers that think they are millionaires but they are just higher middle class) started with our own Stanley cup craze here in the country. Those water cups today are closer to BR$ 300,00 (US$ 60), which is absurd considering the minimum wage here is US$ 285. But I think all of this is just a reflection of late-stage capitalism and consumerism, especially if we consider the fact that this cup in specific is a collab with Starbucks, that just a few days prior was being canceled and losing stock marketing prices due to support to Israel, in days there was not a soul talking about that anymore but also giving money to them indirectly through Stanley.

I think the funniest thing about any of the reusable cup trends is how the whole point of reusable cups is to limit the amount of single use plastic and paper products we consume but buying a new cup in every single color for the couple of months where it's trendy only to have it eventually sit in the back or your cupboard for years once the trend dies down kind of....negates the whole purpose of reusable cups?

I have a suspicion it's because of the price. It's priced high because you're only supposed to buy one and it should last you a very long time, but as with anything, people seem to equate the price with status. Worst thing about this is that once the craze is gone nobody will actually use the Valentine themed or any Stanley cup altogether, basically killing the purpose behind their production
@Widdekuu919 ай бұрын
The idea of someone giving anyone a Valentinesday-Stanley Cup is a bit sad though. It's been 10 years since I celebrated Valentinesday and to be fair, it was never "really fun' or something, because my ex was a man with severe trustissues (never liked any gift I gave, because he was sure it was a hidden trap), that only felt "manly" if he could sabotage his lovely gestures with some bad behaviour, that he would call manly roughness. So my ex would give me a rose, sure, but he'd hand it over to me and then take his trousers off and drag me to the bedroom, where 'no' would just be ignored. He couldn't say the words "I love you' and would just wait until I said them and then reply; 'I know!' like Han Solo. He kept this up for the entire relationship of 4,5 years (including the unofficial 3 years before and ofcourse the half-a-year friendship before that.) I díd give a lot for Valentinesday, I made a handpainted T-shirt with an anatomical heart on it, a papermaché heart (to match) and some handdrawn cards. A memorygame, a painting of Boba Fett, Rorshach, any of his heroes. It was never appreciated though and whenever I received a gift (hardly ever) it was usually a kitchencalender for his kitchen that "I could also use one day if we live together" or a book he wanted to read and suggested I could read "once he was done with it." I never got to read that book, nor did he pre-read it as he wanted. And after I refused to take him back, all my art was (instead of returning it, as I asked) dramatically burned during a mancave weekend with his friends. Many figured I must've cheated to make him so angry. I never spoke to his friends again, only clarified to a few that asked, that I hadn't cheated, which they were most confused about, given the raging and complaining my ex had appareantely been doing. Again, it's been 10 years of being single and I'm very happy this way, but I also long for the moments in which you get to spoil someone, by hugging them in the morning and bringing them some (bit of) breakfast in bed or a little gift. And I am curious what it would be like to have him respond happy to my gifts and allow me to be myself without strain. I've offered to help someone with his Valentines-surprise once, to surprise his girlfriend, but he found it weird that I offered to get involved and help out with the gifts and all. Which I understand in a way. So now I just fantasize in my head about what I'd do if I had a partner and how I would surprise them. Sneak out of bed, the morning of Valentinesday to get your gift and then jump on the bed, kneel on the blanket and present it. Kissing his forehead, watching him as he opens the gift. Seeing him read the card and (in the case of my fantasy) thanking me for the effort I put in. Him then presenting a gift from next to his bed, which contains something I'd mentioned before and he remembered. And a card, in which he wrote that he loves me. He will not announce 'what we will be doing' and it won't be something unromantic like checking if the modelcar-shop has his 8-inch spare tires left in stock or him-playing-Minecraft-while-I-wait-and-watch-until-the-shops-are-closed. He will ask; 'What shall we do?' or better; 'Well, you mentioned you wanted to go to .. let's prepare!' and get his backpack ready. My ex had convinced me that "no other man will ever put up with your whining and your annoying behaviour, you should be glad to have such a wonderful boyfriend like me" but I'm starting to get hope that I will find someone that I like and that he likes me back, not someone like him. And when I find him, he will surprise me with gifts and I will surprise him with gifts and I can be myself and he can be himself and it will be grand. I am in no rush, but this is my new dream. p.s. I also got a card once, which was empty apart from a sexual request (more like demand) and a biscuit that he wanted me to finish, because he paid for it. Apart from a letter from a stalker in highschool that referenced sexual things and eventually led to the stalker threatening me with a pair of scissors, I never received anything for Valentinesday.

3:18 biologist here, taking oral collagen isn't worth it. When that collagen arrives to the stomach, it dissolves in other little molecules that are used in other places of the body just like if you took an apple or a piece of meat, taking collagen doesn't help with skin that way. Collagen is created by your body for it's own, the only way to produce more collagen is doing exercise and having a healthy diet
@lilita2159 ай бұрын
Thanks I was considering buying it
@gwennorthcutt4219 ай бұрын
i was gonna say... its pointless to buy collagen bc ur body digests it down into proteins anyways. your body can make collagen from any protein source, like eating meat. its just paying more for extra steps!

@lilita215 never buy anything from a sponsor ever. There's a reason they are using this marketing tactic. If you came across them in a supermarket, pharmacy, on amazon etc you wouldn't buy it. So why buy it just because some youtuber claims it is good
@EllisBrehme9 ай бұрын
I actually started taking collagen after Chad Chad said she started taking it. Mine's to aid my dry, cracking skin, as well as its plasticity. I don't know if it's a placebo effect, but it actually did help pretty much immediately. I also exercise and have a healthy diet.

I’d never had a Stanley before and admittedly needed to drink more water so I bought one, and you will not believe the amount of people who rushed inside at opening and were like “WHERE IS THE STANLEY? DO YOU HAVE THE STANLEY?????” It was crazy. Now those suckers go for 300 dollars online.

Too bad you can't have an in-store auction for those. Have just one (to make it seem even more rare) with a whiteboard next to it. Keep writing the highest bid on that whiteboard and let it go for a week. That cup will sell for $500, especially if you put some starbucks-y dangle on the handle as well. That would make for a great reality show episode as well. Like Storage Wars or whatever, but all over one cup.

This Stanley cup thing is nuts. Stanleys have been around for as long as I can remember. Both of my grandfathers had the big green thermos because it would keep their coffee hot. One was a cattle farmer, the other a master carpenter. I've always seen it as the 'working mans' cup.
@ellaina__el66289 ай бұрын
Well unfortunately brands like Stanley, carrhart , hell I’ll even mention wrangler , and yeti have used to be mainly blue collar / outdoors brands but now unfortunately it’s all about buying the brand. I’m a farrier and a farmer I work out in the cold and use carrhart and I splurged on my first 36 ounce yeti water bottle because they do work good. But I’ll get shit from people who accuse me of buying the brand. Even though that those said brands were originally targeted to a specific group which I’m a part of lol

@@roseanoctuaasmrI don’t think the thermoses/travel mugs have the same hype anyway. I have the travel mug and the logo is on the bottom so you wouldn’t even clock it as a Stanley. Got it almost a decade ago and it still does its job almost too well (left it in the car in winter for a few hours and my tea was still almost too hot to drink.) They also sent me a new lid for free when I accidentally melted a part in the dishwasher, which is refreshing in this time of upsells and planned obsolescence. I love this video. It’s crazy how many people are so programmed to fall for these marketing strategies. I love content creators who try to deprogram people. I remember my marketing class back in college first thing my professor said on day one is “marketing is convincing people to buy a product and service they don’t need” it seems like common sense I.e selling snow to an Eskimo but it seems like there are too many Eskimos out here buying snow. One of the things marketing does is create a problem that doesn’t exist and supplying a solution for them with at times having that solution solve several other problems . Example: do you ever get tired of bending over to pick something up? We’ll try the pick up stick, no more bending down and falling over, plus the pick up stick can be used for reaching high places, handling snakes, scratching your back etc. and people will buy it
