This reminds me of that Spongebob episode where there was a popular drink called a "Kelp Shake" and it was all the rage. Everyone was drinking it. Then by the end of the episode it turned out Kelp Juice was radioactive and had negative detrimental effects on those who drink it.

I case you didn’t know.. Sodium sulfide kits indicate the presence of lead by turning black or grey. Rhodizonate kits indicate the presence of lead by turning red or pink. Dark orange/brown is normal. Hope his helped!, ❤️ heave a nice day/morning/afternoon/noon/night/midnight!!

Yeah i used a couple of these kits in college. Multiple tests can indeed, have multiple colors, same as a pregnancy test. They work by combining chemicals and looking for chemical reactions. Even red cabbage juice i think has some interesting properties if exposed to acids/bases and it's like a litmus test. Regardless, the conclusion is clear. Stanley fan or not. The exposed hole in the bottom has a matchstick amount of lead used to seal up the vacuum. Solder is commonly made of 1$/lb lead, as 7-14$/lb tin is lead free and a acceptable substitute as well. But technically costs 14x more a pound. They could likely just make future stanley cups lead free by using a 7-14$/lb tin/ 1.4$/lb zinc lead free solder mixture. It might be what hydroflask uses even for their lead free cups. it would be 10x more a pound, sure. But if it's a matchstick amount.. it might literally just be all these lead concerns over 2-5 cents a cup.. on a 45$ branded, 5-6$ wholesale cup.

I already left a comment, but I was one of those people who was fine with it because I didn't know JUST HOW BAD and how widespread it was. Then, thankfully, I saw this video, and after looking up lead poisoning symptoms, it seems like I have just barely caught myself in the midst of getting lead poisoning. I drank them because they were the best cups I had in terms of keeping my drinks cold (not because they make me "look cool" or whatever, I don't really see the appeal in that), but yeah... don't think I'll be touching those things from now on. Like, I know there's gonna be lead in most things, but THAT MUCH?? No thanks. I'd like to live til 20.

Every cup has some toxic thing inside it, in the case for stanley cups there's no lead exposure to the inside of it. Literally every brand will have lead on them in the material used for the vacuum seal (except those that found a way around it, like Hydroflask). Find a brand that covers that seal dot with a steel cap, not just paint. Those caps can very very rarely pop off, but it's almost impossible and many brands are cool about replacing it under their lifetime warranty. Getting a silicon boot would also help keep the paint intact over brands that only paint over them.

Black on a lead test means there's so much lead that it's become so dark with red colouring as to overwhelm the chemical indicator. Sometimes the best way to keep a kid from doing something is to scare them out of it. Example: Don’t touch the stove or you’re going to burn off your skin and have to go to the hospital. The problem is with continuous use of the cup. Sure, you are correct we are not directly putting our lips on the painted part and drink from it. But it’s our hands. Like the second woman has explained, the lead “dust” can get on to your hand and enter to your system either by the user consuming food after, or simply have the particles on their skin for a prolonged period of time. This is especially so for children, whom are also the targeted audience of this product. As they continuing on using the cup, their natural oil will start to rub off the paint little by little and enter to their system. Even just by washing them could make the lead particle looser too. That’s critical for children that’s still developing, and that’s why parents are concerned.

In the US, the FDA allows for small amounts of lead in food, cosmetics, and other products. These positive tests don't tell us how much lead is in these bottles, just that some trace is present. I would be interested to know what the levels of lead are and if people have the potential to reach toxic levels with continued use of the cups.

If the test only tinged slightly, I'd agree. In the cases where the test has a very strong reaction, I'd be looking into further testing because no, that isn't some FDA approved trace amount, pretty sure. Before I would go recalling all the Stanley cups, I would want to know if they were using tap water. A surprising amount of lead can be found in tap water, as a lot of the pipes were made with lead before they realized it was bad. But then because it was too expensive to replace all the pipes, they just injected a chemical to prevent lead from peeling off. So all of those pipes are just a time-bomb waiting to give everyone lead-poisoning (yeah). This would make a lot more sense then Stanley using leaded steel to manufacture their products (since that is technically illegal).

@@kittysoftpaws3677 Did any of them test their other cups? I think we all do tend to take our safety for granted. When it comes to pipes, old lead pipes usually are safe due to calcium build up lining the pipes basically preventing it from leaching, but then spikes in lead contamination in water will occur every time work is done on the water infrastructure. Most older places with a shared infrastructure will have lead pipes in their system. Where I grew up you never used hot tap water for drinks or recipes, we were always taught to use cold tap water and heat it in the pot, because the water heater can end up with a concentration of lead in it. Is that true? Dunno. But lead in city water was a known risk. We were also told to run our taps for a certain amount of time every time watermains were being worked on or hydrants flushed, and not to use the water until we'd run it out to clear the contaminants that were stirred up.

Lead is also in nearly every piece of electrical equipment including the earbuds that you put in your ears. Most in the video were not using tests with black stuff on them? Also, there's two types of lead tests with different chemicals, right? I think what you are saying comes down to reliability of the supplier. I don't doubt that there are pre-contaminated tests coming out of places like China and Singapore, but if you dip the swab and just let it set, if it was pre-contaminated it would change without having to swab anything. So one can easily buy one of those cheap bulk packs and just do a control test to make sure it's not a bad batch. From there if they get a strong reaction they can look into sending it to an actual lab for professional testing to find out what is going on with the item.

They are inconsistent because they only show the presence of the substance that's all, it doesn't react to amounts of the substance.

@@samanthaabreu782 Yes it does. It shows right on the directions that if it only turns slightly pink there's mild contamination, and the more intensely reddish pink it turns, the higher the contamination. It's not giving you an exact measurement, sure, but it's not a simple positive vs negative kind of test. The tests most people are using in this video are ones used to test for lead paint in houses, that's their main use.

Please note: this will only happen if your trying to find the lead. Its at the bottom under a sticker, and you need it to be hot down there for it to be dangerous. Dont be too worried you already bought one.

I'm a 90s kid and I remember being very young when hearing about lead poisoning. The shit that it does to you is insane and I wouldn't risk it. No reason on earth should even a drop of lead be on anything you use to eat, drink, etc. I think Stanley owes a serious evaluation to finding out why these lead tests are turning positive from swabs all over the inside of the cup.

So what im hearing is that EXACTLY where the first 2 people tested for led is where the Stanley cups get soldered with led WHICH if anyone payed attention THERE WAS A GAPING HOLE where they have stated if it has that damage it should potentially be disposed off to avoid the led poisoning. But people dont read rules no more, reminds me of that apple terms and conditions episode in South Park

Funny thing about that regular cup is several of them with painted on characters also have lead paint. McDonald’s Shrek cups and Garfield cups are some that jump to mind. Nothing is really safe but it’s still not the insane amount of lead people are drinking out of those Stanley cups.

Hi! I’m studying chemistry in college, and I can tell you why the those ones are black. We actually got to do a lab once in inorganic chemistry with these test swabs. If you’re interested, just look up why your swab is a certain color. But especially the swabs have certain ions on them that when they come into contact with lead, they turn a different color. The one that turns red/pink simply has a different ion in it and the one that turns brown/black has another ion in it. Anyway, the fact there is lead present in these cups is very scary and the people saying lead poisoning is fine or cool will not be responding that way when they actually get it. The symptoms are not good. If your curious look up lead poisoning in Flint, Michigan. They had a really bad case of it a couple years ago.

A lot of water bottle brands and even zippy cups have that. It’s called a lead sealing dot. If you see a circle like that on the bottom, it’s lead. Because it’s on the outside of the cup, it doesn’t actually leach lead into the water, but it’s a problem for fidgety kids who put their fingers on the dot. For that reason, I won’t buy my kids a bottle that has one.

do insulated bottles contain lead? Lead based solder is still used in almost all insulated water bottles on the market. Solder is the material used to seal in the vacuum layer into your steel water bottle

I don't have a Stanley cup but my blender bottle for protein shakes lol. I wash it and use it for water too. Seals tight and works fine. The fact that CHILDREN are the ones wanting these Stanleys and primarily using them is what scares me with the lead. This is just wild to me they do not care out of the alure of it being the "cool cup". LEAD is "cool"? WHAT....

People literally have to destroy the bottom of their Stanley cups to get to the tiny little dot of lead that Stanley uses in these cups. The only lead is located underneath a little button on the button on the bottom of the cup. You would have to pry that button off of the cup and expose the lead, which obviously people aren’t going to do unless they do it on purpose. The tiny bit of lead at the bottom seals off the hole that creates the vacuum insulation.

It’s a cup, it’s ment to be used on the go, ofc it’s gonna sustain damage (especially if a hiker or someone like that uses it). Things happen, who knows, I know I wouldn’t drink out of a cup if I run the risk of getting lead poisoning if I drop it a few to many times though 💀
