"Take the sheet off your face, boy. It's a brand new day." Now those are lyrics! And they say "boy" to top it all off. I remember hearing this in the 70's and was a bit shocked but i loved it! White girl from the 'burbs here, btw. Love love love these guys!❤

Well, first of all, it's really gospel music. Secondly, stop dissing the generations or descendants of black R&B and gospel groups artists like the Staples Singers, Gladys Night & the Pips, Sly &The Family Stone, Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, Sam Cooke, James Brown, etc.... and, many of today's black young people and kids sing great.., all throughout the South. I'm talkin' 'bout da church.

I love how they toned it all down at the beginning especially, so he could still lead, as his voice is soft now. Later on she says, "don't worry, I won't leave ya Pops!" that's true love right there.

It's a cryin' shame it took over 20 years to be inducted!! They have always been great. Mavis is a national treasure.
@DonnieHardenJr3 жыл бұрын
It has to be 25 years since your first album before you're eligible. For instance Are You Experienced? came out in 1967 but the Jimi Hendrix Experience wasn't inducted until 1992.

I just can't get over Mavis and her voice. I absolutely love her. The woman just oozes soul from her pores. There are only two other women that can hold a candle to her and they are Mahalia Jackson and Patti Labelle. Such powerful and beautiful voices they all are.

@misstury606 I have to agree with you on that. Aretha & Tina Turner are great signers but Mahalia Jackson, Mavis Staple and Patti LaBelle have voices that are other worldly and spiritual. They sing with every fiber of their being; from their core.

Love how right at the :18 second mark of Respect Yourself, Mavis "catches" that Pops is having a bit of trouble remembering the lines. Immediately,she jumps in and takes over the lead until she hears that he is now good,and then "hands" it back to him! Class Act!!
@crispmom9 жыл бұрын
***** The guy was 70 years old in this video. Cut him some slack. I think by the phrase "class act," Davidmurray1952 meant how the daughter handled it so that his slip up didn't ruin the song, then effectively turned it back over to him seamlessly without interrupting the song.
@tn2705859 жыл бұрын
crispmom 70 is not cutting it. He was 85. Pops ruled. :)

I first heard of the Staples Singers when they performed at the Soul to Soul Concert held in Accra, Ghana. Other artistes we're Santana, Ike and Tina Turner, and Wilson Pickett. Years later I found out that Prince played the Soul to Soul video at his concerts after sound check and before his concerts started. He must have heard about Soul to Soul from Mavis Staples whom he was close to.

THE SPINNERS have been nominated 3 TIMES for induction into The ROCK and ROLL HALL of FAME. But , they've been PASSED OVER 3 TIMES in favor of RAPPERS. ****THAT'S JUST WRONG**** NO R&B acts have actually been inducted into the Hall for Years, due to the R&R HoF's unwritten BAN on R&B artists in favor of Rappers and 70's/80's ROCK BANDS. This needs to CHANGE ...PRONTO !!! It makes NO SENSE that 80's Rappers get inducted, while R&B acts of the 50's, 60's , and 70's are still WAITING to get in !!! ***NOMINATED, BUT NOT INDUCTED:*** THE CHANTELS, BEN E. KING (solo), WAR, CHAKA KHAN & RUFUS, THE MARVELETTES, THE J.B.'S, JOE TEX, CHIC. ***NOT EVEN NOMINATED*** HAROLD MELVIN & THE BLUE NOTES, THE STYLISTICS, THE CHI-LITES, THE DELFONICS, GENE CHANDLER, THE DOMINOES, DIONNE WARWICK, LOU RAWLS, JR WALKER & THE ALL STARS, THE COMMODORES, THE POINTER SISTERS, PATTI LaBELLE & THE BLUE BELLES/ LaBELLE, THE WHISPERS , THE DRAMATICS, THE MAIN INGREDIENT, EDWIN STARR, CHUCK JACKSON, BARRY WHITE, BROOK BENTON, THE MANHATTANS, and NUMEROUS OTHERS !!! How can an ENTIRE MUSICAL ERA (Late 60's -70's R&B/SOUL ) be just...BYPASSED to induct 80's rappers ?? How did GRANDMASTER FLASH & THE FURIOUS FIVE, NWA, RUN DMC, TUPAC SHAKUR, and PUBLIC ENEMY be inducted...while these R&B superstars have just been ...IGNORED ??
