#StarSpangledBanner
Artist: Donald S. Sutherland
Choir: Washington Men's Camerata
Conductor: Thomas Beveridge
Composer: John Stafford Smith
Composer: Thomas Beveridge
2010 Gothic
O say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner, O long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
When our land is illumined with Liberty's smile,
If a foe from within strike a blow at her glory,
Down, down with the traitor that dares to defile
The flag of her stars and the page of her story!
By the millions unchained, who our birthright have gained,
We will keep her bright blazon forever unstained!
And the Star-Spangled Banner in triumph shall wave
While the land of the free is the home of the brave.
O thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation.
Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the Heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: 'In God is our trust.'
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

On September 13th, 2001, Queen Elizabeth II suggested to the Royal Guards that they should play this Anthem after the tragic events that took place 2 days prior. And so they did. You might not believe it. I am from China. When I was serving in the military, the very first duty I was assigned to was to sing this song coz there happened to be an USAF delegation in our unit, it was also because I speak English. With less than a week to go before the 4th July, it did take me a lot of time to learn this song, not only just memorizing the lyrics, but also fathoming the emotions, historical backgrounds and sentiments coming along with it. On that day of performance, although nervous, but I finally did it, and I would never forget the warm applauses and whistles from the delegation. The delegation commander was Wg Cdr Miller, who was a very kind gentleman and absolutely an amazing friend to make. He said he was glad that we met each other like this as friends. I said, of course, deep down we are all human beings and I never hope that one day we end up meeting each other on the battlefield.

For reference, this was about the war of 1812. During this, British attempted to take over Fort Mchenry to be able to dock and support their troops in Baltimore. If this happened, Britain would surely have won the war and ceased Baltimore and eventually all of America. They brought an armada of ships and warned the American soldiers that they would begin a mass assault on the fort, killing everyone inside unless they lowered the flag in the middle of the fort indicating they have surrendered. The American soldiers refused and stated they’d rather die. The shelling began, relentlessly bombarding the fort, an American named Francis Scott Key was aboard the ship as a nagoriator at the time, watching the pitch black fort, seeing the flag still waving whenever a shell exploded, illuminating the sky. Finally the British had enough of it and decided to take that flag down themselves. They fired all they repeatedly bombarded that flag mercilessly, yet somehow the flag remained up. In the morning when the shelling stopped, they stared in awe as that flag still remained. The soldiers of the fort refused to let that flag topple, holding it up themselves, even if it cost them their lives. The entire armada gave up, low on materials, knowing their attack was hopeless. Without their extra forces, their attack on Baltimore failed, and the US once again, escaped from Britain’s rule. Edit: fixed a typo.

@@collinthegamer510 you never need to thank me for my service my friend.. You guys are why we do it. It was an unbelievable feeling of responsibility and pride to have been serving our country and defending our citizens but even after I returned stateside to civilian life I still carry myself with that same feeling of complete awareness of my surroundings and my focus in public as well. I'm aware that I have been discharged for a very long time now but it seems like my training and discipline remained with me to this day. Every time my friends and I or my family and I go out in public places and we're around other people.. I can't force myself to stop being focused on everything going on around me . I just know if something tragic went down then id be bound by my sense of duty and obligation to the people to intervene and protect the innocent. My ole lady is always giving me a hard time with it because she thinks that just because one of us are discharged from armed service detail that we can suddenly just turn it off and go right back to being a normal civilian 😆. Its not in our blood to turn a blind eye or avoid the conflict though she will never understand that. Semper Fi ... Its not just a couple of words we say . It lives within us. The few, the proud. I do admit that I take pride having been in the Marines and i salute any man or woman thats willing to enlist and apply themselves to something bigger than us. As much as we hear this song, we don't actually realize how well thought out the whole song is. It really undermines the whole meaning of the song to just sing the first verse. Why you end with "Oh say does that star spangled banner yet wave oer the land of the free and the home of the brave?" why just end with a question? Does the banner wave oer the land of the free and the home of the brave? YES IT DOES! We as people don't really interpret that last phrase of the first verse as a question, but it is. Now knowing the whole song, I do say that star spangled banner does wave oer the land of the free and the home of the brave!!! We are soo blessed to live in America, yet sadly most people these days just complain about everything bad about it. If you are one of those people, do you really think that YOU live in the land of the free and the home of the brave? If you want America to be something better than what it is, do you really care about all the people that died to keep the land of the free free? The home of the brave brave? If not get the fuck out of this country and learn just how great America actually is. God bless the USA.

@@anoon- they always complain about how the US isn’t great, but they seriously don’t know how good they get to live in the US. You get public of speech, big houses, you can express who you are, believe in different religions, meeting very different people, get to go online, jobs, schools, etc. if they really want to know what a true country without any freedom, they can go to North Korea. If they don’t like the US, then they should leave. I know the US isn’t perfect, but hell, no country is perfect. For example, Canada kicked out the Natives as well and wasn’t equal with everyone. The UK caused a huge Famine in Ireland and in India. Japan bombed Pearl Harbor and wanted to take over the islands around them. Germany killed millions of Jews and other people who weren’t considered “perfect” and so much more. I hope they realize how good they get it here.

Every country has some "astonishing" history behind it's anthem. And it is more story than history.... what's so astonishing in american history? Nothing. Maybe american revolution, but you must admit it was british who made USA in some way. It was British who founded american states, colonial states on eastern shores. and so on. and what language do you speak? English. why english? Becouse, in the begining, British people were the majority in north american colonies. and those british people became americans.... US is a part of British heritage. At the begining, at least. But all that followed had stood on British foundaments..... Your spreading all the way to Pacific was not that astonishing. It was savageous with plenty of crimes and genocides.... yyour civil war.... Oh hypocrital anti-slavery against slavery... Let's go further. WW 1 and WW2....No. nothing astonishing. Americans made Hitler....And after WW2 all your history is something you shoud be ashamed of

And what are you on about made hitler yeah everyone made hitler almost every county besides that of Asia I believe had a hand in helping nazi Germany before Britain and France declared war on them and the USA tried to stay out of both world wars. The anthem is amazing because men knew that the British would bombard that very spot which held the flag and did it believing in a better country. And I don’t understand how you can fault the USA when literally every country has made there fair share of mistakes and America is no exception. History of the song: This song was written during the War of 1812, a war where France n America (which was had 64% less land then today) were going to war against The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. In 1814, France Scott Key was on a British Vessel gazing over the Baltimore Fort and saw our Flag, and since that place had been bombarded by UK, he wrote that song the next day to show we have power. A few months later, December 14th, 1814, In Ghent, Belgium, the "Treaty of Ghent" is signed, signifying America's victory and the United Kingdom's defeat. 1931, its the national anthem.

There would be more appreciation and pride for the country in which they/we reside. There is STILL a strong majority in America who love this great country even though a small minority control much of the narrative broadcasted via media outlets and therefore make it appear as if the majority don’t like the current and historical America. That is why it is important for more of us who are proud to be Americans, proud to be in a land truly of opportunity and great freedoms (albeit slowly decreasing via encroaching socialism), to let our voices be heard - especially to the rising generation who are being taught a false narrative of America!

Here is his original manuscript: www.si.edu/sites/default/files/newsdesk/photos/star_spangled24b1af2.jpg The verse which is sung in this version here was written long after Key's death. Written by Oliver Wendell Holmes. Yes, you're talking about this inserted revisionist verse which was penned by a person who had barely turned 5 years old when Key wrote the original words. So then we can go the next step to work toward an explanation as to _why_ everyone skips this original 3rd verse. Just scan the words, and you'll find phrases like this: *_Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution._* *_No refuge could save the hireling and slave_* *_From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave_* George Carlin famously ranted about how militaristic our national anthem is. Imagine how long he could have gone off if he focused just on this 3rd verse. *_George Carlin 'We Like War'_* kzbin.info/www/bejne/aIPPop2uqNlprrcm35s

@@WhyDoIKeepFuckinUp I’m originally from Pakistan. Half of my grandfather’s siblings settled in the US in the 70s and the other half settled in Canada in the 80s. We were the only ones left here so after completing my MBBS (medical degree) and clearing the USMLE (licensing) exam, I decided to move too! However, I’m back in Pakistan at the moment for some work.
