@marlenegold280 I have a friend whose son did that for months. On top of that, even if he was picked up as gentle as possible, he'd startle really bad. It continued for longer than she was told it should, so she took him to the DR. It turned out his ear tubes just weren't fully developed when he was born, so he was experiencing sounds and sensations differently. What we feel sitting up from laying down to him was very disorienting, that any type of sudden noise in the same room as him, he probably felt strongly in his ear as movement/vibration. To this day, at almost a year old, he still occasionally startles in a way that would scare someone who doesn't know why a baby that old would. It's way better now though, at every big movement or noise he doesn't fish flop his arms around anymore, it only seems to be noises louder than a vacuum that spook him now.(fireworks, car horn, etc) He has even been speaking many simple words since he can hear them properly now! 😊

In some places in Indonesia, there's a ritual called gebrak. Basically the baby is laid down on a wooden bed or table, then a dukun bayi (traditional midwife, may not have any medical training whatsoever) would say some prayers... and SLAM her palm on the table right beside the baby 😬 This is repeated a few times with more prayers in between the slams. Would the baby cry? Yes of course, its a baby after all. Why do they do this? It's said this would make the baby doesn't startle easily. I'm not sure why the startles are bad tho, no one explained that to me clearly. I only know that it may interrupt sleep and feeding, also kinda look like convulsions sometimes. Older people would ask a new mom if the ritual is done, or if it's not done properly, or pester her to do it whenever they see a baby exhibit Moro reflex. This is ingrained so deeply in some people, that when my baby boy startled in his sleep, my mom (who is a certified GP) automatically said to me that it's because I didn't do the gebrak ritual for him. I looked her in the eye and said, "You do know it's called Moro reflex and it's normal, right?" Then she was like, "Huh. Yeah. It is." 😅

I wouldn't be shocked if a grandparent or great grandparent suddenly invites their favorite dukun bayi to do whatever ritual they want. I love the Moro reflex. I'll clarify that I'm a pediatrician, not someone who goes around startling babies for fun.... There are three parts to the complete reflex: the arms shoot out, they curl back in and cover the face, and then the baby cries (this is why nearly all young infants cry when baptized... watch for it the next time you're at the baptism of an infant less than 2 or 3 months). If you think about it, it is a brilliantly evolved response to being startled when you are part of a species that is born completely helpless. Thrusting your arms out scares away whatever was coming at you. Circling your hands around and covering your head protects one of your most vulnerable areas (as a newborn or young infant, you're already scrunched up to conserve heat and protect your vital organs). Crying out alerts the adults who are caring for you that something is up. It's almost as much fun as the crawling reflex! Oh, who am I kidding? I love newborn and young infant behaviors. There is such an amazing richness in their competency to face the world. If you ever have tje opportunity to do an NBO (Newborn Behavioral Observations) session with your baby, definitely do it. Babies are just so heart-stoppingly amazing once you start to understand that so many of their behaviors aren't "accidental." (Yes, I geek out about newborns 😂)

They did this to my oldest while in utero. They needed him to wake up and move for a high-risk ultrasound appt, so they used metal spoons - one cupped to my belly over baby, and the other to lightly hit the spoon on my belly to make a sound just loud enough and close enough to startle the beans out of the baby and I both. His Moro reflex most definitely worked. Lol He moved, the tech moved the wand, took the pics, and we all had a small chuckle at how very odd that was for me as a new mom-to-be. After birth, I hated to see my babies startle. 😢 I can't know why anyone would do it for funsies, and it's sad that you have to disclaim this, but I totally understand and appreciate that you did. 🖤🖤🖤🖤

Whilst you have a choice to swaddle as they do in the US nd have a good quality of sleep, you might also notice that they have a high SIDS rate. What is startling is I read about a baby doing this during a near-birth abortion, when they stabbed him in the back of the neck to scoop out his brain before he could be completely delivered. Because after delivery, he'd have been a human being & they'd have had to let him live. The nurse was so traumatized, she left abortion work after that. 😢

Sigh. I heard about that case. The baby was completely brain dead. No life whatsoever. Hence the startle “REFLEX” dumbass

When they did this to my baby sister, I screamed out "HOLY SHIT" while my moms soul left her body. The doctor had a good laugh and then explained what it was they were doing. Only time my mom let me swear

With my first, I did so much research about anything and everything, so I had to explain this to my poor husband, who did honestly believe his son was about to get hurt...😂❤ Such a beautiful daddy. The nurse just stared at me when I told him what it was and why it was....😂😂.. I really appreciate all your vids! Thank you! 🥰🥰

I have a retained Moro reflex.. I’m nearly 50.. If I’m startled my arms fly up and I do ‘jazz hands’, .. it hurts as it’s so spontaneous I wrench the muscles in my neck and shoulders.. What I know from this is swaddling young babies is a good thing as it saved them from this pain!

I hope the procedure is explained to parents before its executed. This could set off a reflex within the parent which could leave the provider with a black eye. When i was getting ready for college, i had to look after a 6 month old mon - friday during office hours, so it was basically a full time job. Within a couple weeks, they found he had asthma and needed a med mask twice a day and a dose of ventolin a day. I would get him his breakfast when he woke, let him have a bit of time to wake up, then give him his mask every morning, than a couple hours later id give him his dose. Despite doing this he was still being taken into the hospital on the weekends and i couldnt understand this, until one morning when his mom called in late to watch me mask him with his mask dose. When she asked to watch, i knew she wasnt allowing him to get his full dose. I told her, yes, of course you can watch, but you arent going to like what you see. Hes going to scream, hes going to cry, and hes going to fight this tooth and nail, but he wont be hurt. And boy, did he scream and fighy it! Understandable. He was 7 months old by then, and had a mask forced onto his face, with a loud ass machine pumping stuff into that mask. I always had to put a firm grasp on him to keep. Him from hurting himself in the fight. I explained this to her while she watched, and i could see her pain watching him scream and cry, and i said "think of it this way ... when hes carrying on like this, ALL that medication is getting into his lungs, where its needed. Not only that, but just think of the amount of lung function it takes for him to keep this up for the full 15 minutes. She was able to relax after that, and realized she wasnt doing him any good by not gritting her teeth and making him take it. His asthma attacks stopped

If babies don't have this reflex it would indicate an injury, damage to particular nerves, or a genetic condition.

Basically if they don't have the startle reflex when they're supposed to then it could mean there's a problem. So would then be referred for further tests.
