Yamada kun isn’t bad with the age gap and how it progresses. Something to actually critique somewhat is A Girl and Her Guard Dog. I can see Maomao not getting nominated based on when the series ends so it instead qualifies for next year. The only way to survive and win in JJK is retire. There will be more characters to come at least. JJK season 3 coming out eventually

This season has really spoiled us with Apothecary Diary and Frieren. I'm having a hard time picking between them for my favourite. They also have all my top picks for best girl of the year, Maomao, Fern and Frieren are all up there for me

That Nanami wallpaper on your computer screen. JJK missed a HUGE opportunity on being a sports anime imo. 💔 Edit: my best finds of the year were The Apothecary Diaries and My New Boss is Goofy. I enjoyed the pilot of My Level 999 Love Story with Yamada Kun so much, that I ended up catching up on the manga and it's the perfect shoujo series: A GREAT romance + a found family. I'm having so much fun spending time with these characters. 😁

Love your insights! 2023 was a great year for anime. I'm extremely happy we got several female realistic characters across different genres with Skip to Loafer, Sousou no Frieren and Apothecary Diaries. Mitsumi, Frieren and Maomao live in completely different worlds but their experiences were refreshing in a medium were female characters are usually reduced to a side kick, an exaggerated femme fatale or a love interest. I also agree with your comparison between Thorfinn and Eren's character development. Vinland Saga 2 had an AMAZING shift. It breaks my heart that a lot of people didn't appreciate the storytelling and character growth in Vinland Saga s2. It was an honor to watch Thorfinn become a true warrior. On the other side, Shingeki no Kyojin's finale felt wacky and half assed. They threw a lot of 'explanations' to Eren's and Ymir's motivations that made NO SENSE or came out of NOWHERE. It was painful to watch a show with a beautifully crafted backstory break apart with so much nonsense. I know it's been 10 years since SNK started airing, but I would have waited 10 more years for an ending that honoured it better. And (spoilers) I'm not talking about changing the sad/bittersweet aspects of it, like Eren dying and stuff. No. I'm talking about the random bs like "Oh Ymir chose Mikasa to free her. Why? Idk, only Ymir knows". WTF. Or "Bertholdt wasn't supposed to die that die so I redirected the titan to my mom". Sir, what? The way they just dumped a bunch of 'impactful' explanations that had no connection with EVERYTHING they built in the past was insulting to me. Wished they didn't pressure Isayama that much and gave him time to actually craft the ending he wanted. But well. I'm also into working adults that have fun like My boss is goofy. It felt like a hug to my soul and I loved it. Thanks for your video, hope to see more in 2024 💕

Hells Paradise is also a shounen that gave us a great, capable and important Female Lead alongside the male one with Sagiri and some good female side characters. I was half trough with anime tbh bc of the constant ongoing mysogony of the medium by putting the females as less powerful and in less story important roles even if the personality is fleshed out. Especially after MHA and JJK dropped the Ball hard after their initial tease on better written females ( for jjk it is in the manga). Then Hells Paradise, Chainsaw Man (Makima, Power) Frieren, and The Apothecary Diaries came along. 4 Anime with good females with 3 being in shounen category in one year is very much. Before that, if we exclude Shoujo and self-contained story movies I can only think of Black clover, Durarara and Soul Eater before 2023 dropped. Some others have like 1 good expectation from the rule f.e. Fairy Tail with Erza, One Piece with Nami but still have their downs. Some argue AOT has a good cast but I dislike how obsessed Mikasa is with Eren and Hanji doesn´t seem to identify themselves as female in the Manga - so with those two out it is more on the middle bar for me. This year felt really like a step in the right direction. I am going to check out Skip no Loafer soon. Vinland Saga is also a favourite of mine. The story and developement were so good. Thorfinn got one of the best redemtion/ coming of Age arcs I have seen and went from a slightly dislikeable character to a great one for me personally.

Thanks for all the interesting content this year! I have enjoyed finding your content and will continue to watch it with great interest. As far as Trigun Stampede, you didn't miss anything by dropping it. I was super hyped for it; read the manga, rewatched the '98 anime only to be completely disappointed. Manga Vash does become more somber as the story progresses, but he never lost that spark which Stampede really lacked. You are 100% correct that Studio Orange are technically amazing with their animation style - but the direction they took Stampede and the storytelling as well as the complete redesigns of characters was a "choice". I watched and reviewed each episode weekly, but by the end, they'd lost me. I know I sounded like a crusty old anime fan but the vibes were totally off with the remake. It was painfully predictable and had paradoxical pacing as my one friend best described it. It was not a space western, it was sci fi. I'm currently watching Apothecary Diaries, My New Boss is Goofy and will now be able to binge season two of Spy x Family with it wrapped up. I can agree with the need for adult shows that are warm, comforting and enjoyable to watch and not contrived high school students. I think I need to go back and finish off the Ice Guy and his Cool Female Colleague - the conversation about her cat was too real . . . Good luck in 2024! Chiming in to co-sign the Goofy Boss recommendation- I stumbled across it one evening and binge-watched all the available episodes. It is so adorable and relatable and life-affirming. I get how it would definitely rub some people the wrong way because it has a BL bait thing going on but it never crosses any lines that actually take it to that territory. It is super-cute men being super-nice to each other and it made my heart happy.

I know I am a month late but thank you for this video! I ended up signing up for a Crunchy Roll trial just to check out The Apothecary Diaries and Tomo-chan is a girl. OMG, I am absolutely in love with The Apothecary Diaries and ended up binge-watching all the episodes in like 2 days🤣. MaoMao and Jinshi are becoming my favorite anime couple and I just love that MaoMao's character is so relatable and assertive yet at the same time unbothered. When she slapped the crap out of that lady-in-waiting I was like YES! I was waiting for Mio to do that to her sister and stepmother in My Happy Marriage the whole season🤣. I really enjoyed Tomo-chan is a girl too. Carol was my favorite character just because her actions and the things she said did not match her character design which I found hilarious. And no, I caught the one-sided romantic vibes between Tomo and the other female character especially in the middle of the series but toward the end it did seem like it was more or less her being worried about losing her friend. It would have been interesting if the show did explore that angle because I don't know of any other animes that portray that sort of a love triangle. I would love for it to get a 2nd season to explore more of the "ups and downs" of their new relationship because the romance animes I've seen usually focus on crushes and the characters finally expressing their love for each other and after that, the show ends. Finally getting together is only the beginning of a relationship but I understand why people like to focus on that stage of romance because of all the tension and desire.

Wait you didn't finish Trigun Stampede? I love Trigun 98 but if you don't see the last ep of stampede once, you are majorly missing out. Hope you do cuz one of the best finales of 2023 imo. Again, i grew up with the 98 anime, but i truly do think stampede lives up when you see where it goes. Gundam Witch From Mercury was my anime of 2023. Suletta is my mecha protag now. Precious ackward badass pilot Even tho i think it has a worse ending than Trigun Stampede's, I could tell it was another steven universe situation of executive meddling when they saw how gay it was getting, plus the ending was still beautiful in its own way❤❤❤

Yeah, I really hated the last few episodes of this season of Jujitsu Kaisen. I feel like it went no wear and they basically lost. And I do not feel certain characters motivations of attacking Yuuji at the end, because I don't remember Yuuji doing anything to another character they don't know, but whatever. To me the ending of that season was downright depressing. I would rather have a few years until I jump back into that anime. On another note I absolutely love Apothecary Diaries, though I do not know what to make of Jinshi and some certain other characters. Also, I absolutely love MaoMao!

Atleast one other person said that apothecary diaries is better than freinen. People are hyping people the same way demon slayer got hyped. It is good very good but not unique. We have seen fumetsu descending stories kids on the slope & vinland saga already. People are saying its a masterpiece because some people started hyping it. Same with oshi no ko. We have seen similar & more grounded oshi no ko already People hyped it cz it looked glossy & characters could be fetishized over
