Just want to thank everyone for all the kind words! I was honestly super nervous about publishing this. Fully expected the comments section to be nothing but "I liked PPT and I'm mad that you don't like what I like!" It means a lot to have some reassurance that I'm really not the only one so frustrated about all of this. And I hope that if people keep speaking up about the importance of crossplay, maybe we can get it onto Sega's radar?

Puyo Puyo definitely suffers from the same issue fighting games (and rhythm games to an extend) have to deal with: How do you get new players to not only try the game but also stick with it, without dumbing down the gameplay to not upset the old playerbase? Well, fighting games can appeal to casual audiences through aesthetics, just making the game look pretty and the fights look awesome, and have recently been experimenting with "easy" characters, or options to make inputs easier in exchange for less damage. Puyo Puyo definitely succeeds on the aesthetics side, as PPT shows, but unlike fighting games you can't really make the gameplay itself look much more exciting since it's still a puzzle game. And you can't really make Puyo Puyo any easier for beginners without dumbing it down for everyone. I think, as unfortunate as it is, that some games simply aren't meant to have mass appeal. In an ideal world, art could just be art that appeals to the audience that works for it, without having to worry about sales numbers. I hope I'm proven wrong and someone figures out how to make Puyo Puyo appealing to casual audiences, especially western ones, but I simply wouldn't know how.

I think the Anniversary games actually do a better job of onboarding beginners. Many of the alternate game modes are much simpler to pick up and play than Tsu, like Mega and Excavation. And Chronicle's JRPG story mode might be the best innovation ever for the genre. A few years back I wrote a rough draft script for a potential video essay comparing the learning curve in competitive puzzle games to the accessibility debate in fighting games. I do have some big thoughts on this subject! But then I shelved it because I felt like the project was too ambitious for me to do it justice. Maybe someday I'll revisit it...

@@missingno_fgc Puzzle games might have an easier time actually teaching players proper fundamentals through side modes/singleplayer campaigns than fighting games do, though you'd probably need to be careful with difficulty. Too easy and the player can just cheese their way through it. Too hard and you risk losing them. Hopefully SEGA's willing to put in the time and money for that one day

fighting games will definitely die in the long run with this "simplification" mindset (watch tekken 8 closely), only game to succeed in it was strive cause it's fanbase doesn't know any better, guilty gear 6 will suffer heavily too there ins't even a way to simplify puyo, I can't think of a more self explanatory game, people will go into this "we have to welcome newcomers" mindset when the reality is the arcade is dead and it's impossible for this style of design to work in current day and age. the modern gamer will just play garbage like league infinitely, and even eSports are dying sega will not care to gather a western audience since Japan is doing fine enough (for now), so the Puyo community should focus on actually fostering for those who care, not attract tourists

@@radio100jogosdeemacs2 While I have my own share of Opinions™ on the direction some modern fighting games are going, the one thing I cannot argue with is that it's clearly working. Fighting games have been steadily growing over the past several years, and I see no sign of that stopping. Not only have they survived without arcades, they're doing even better in the post-arcade era now. I think that the most important thing for fighting games today isn't what any one individual game did in the name of accessibility, but the fact that there is such a wide variety of games that can cater to anything a player is looking for. I don't have to like what every game is doing, as long as the games I do like are somewhere in here. But that, sadly, is not something puzzle games can deliver when the rest of the genre still remains dead and buried, Puyo Puyo is just the last IP standing.

Still heartbreaking to think about the amount of untranslated Puyo Puyo/Madou Monogatari games there are out there. I got crazy into the franchise as a whole and its characters after getting Puyo Puyo Tetris... only to find out most of them are japanese exclusive. Hard times. Maybe I should use the time to actually learn the language 😂 Anyways, great video. I'm pretty shit at Puyo Puyo watching people play the vs modes is still pretty entertaining, but it’s a shame the competitive play scene suffered through weird decisions from SEGA... and the series will continue to suffer through weird decisions from SEGA. 💔💔💔

SEGA is actually kind of infamous for never implementing crossplay in their more competitive games for some reason. Even other releases from around the same time they did like Team Sonic Racing don’t have crossplay for online multiplayer, resulting in a lot of their online lobbies being dead. It just seems like SEGA as a company doesn’t really prioritize online multiplayer as much as other companies do, which is a real detriment to modern versions of Puyo Puyo, no matter if lag exists or not.

I feel like Online would become 20x more active if there was Crossplay... it stupid how Puyo players who dont own a switch basically become an outcasted group simply for not having the proper console. It's also why it's on my wishlist for the next Puyo game is to have Crossplay, especially so that way *everyone* who owns the game can actually play with eachother, especially when it comes to tourneys. Edit: turn out I made this comment too early, but it's _still_ stupid thats its a point to be made. Edit2: Also, to answer the PuzPop exclusivity question... any exclusive Apple Arcade game was funded by Apple, so SEGA took the deal and made PuzPop... same reason with Sonic Dream Team.

There was one in development a while ago, Gelavolt, but it seems to have been abandoned at this point. Checked the GitHub, last commit was over a year and a half ago. TBH, I'm not so sure how successful it'd be. Tetrio was able to take off because Tetris is huge, huge enough to already have a history of multiple clients being popular at once. Whereas Puyo is falling apart just from having two competing clients. I'm concerned it'd be particularly difficult to get the JP community to move over to an unofficial client. And it's because the game is still struggling in the west that we need access to JP opponents to have anybody to consistently play with. On the other hand though, maybe it can't be any worse than what we're dealing with now. Nothing left to lose?

I do want to blame crossplay for sort of killing off puyo competitive, and I do believe that Puyo Puyo Puzzle Pop was sold to Apple entirely for the profit, but I also believe that other games are usually bought at a discount, there's been an entire study in it too. It's about 32%, so selling Puzzle Pop on a subscription service that would never go on sale seems more worth to them. I just wanted to add more flame to the fire, I agree with all of these statements 🐑

I would have been totally fine with putting Puzzle Pop on Apple Arcade in addition to other platforms. Crossplay can even include Apple Arcade. But exclusivity killed the game. Chu Chu Rocket Universe already got delisted, still no port, it's lost media now.

its me im the casual puzzle game player that was introduced to puyo by the tetris crossover. i thought puyopuyo was fun but confusing when i tried it out. maybe if i had stuck around for a while i could have figured out how to combo and win games, but since i bought the game on steam i have other indie puzzle games to play so i never got around to it. still sitting in my steam library tho. i would definitely be more interested in a standalone story game since single player puzzle games are more familiar to me. its cool to hear a bit more about the franchise history and that there is a competitive scene for this game even if it is small outside of japan. thanks for the video!

I feel like I’m in a weird position in all of this as a casual but devoted puyo fan who got into the franchise from PPT. While I love the actual game of puyo, I can’t say I’m really too engaged in it competitively. What I like most about ppt is actually its story, world, and characters. Same with the rest of the series too. I only played online just so I could play puyo puyo against real people, simply for fun. So for me personally, i did not really fw champions because sure it was a good *puyo* game, but it felt like it had no soul, it was simply functional, and half the cast I had no connection to since i never played chronicles. So seeing ppt2 announced was very exciting for me, though even I did feel like it was actually a downgrade from 1 in some ways. And for puzzle pop, I like that we got a story and everything, but I actually quickly forgot about it, I think simply because puyo puyo on mobile just isn’t very convenient for me at all. And I also really don’t wanna subscribe to service just for one game I play only sometimes. Really all I want from Sega is a new puyo game in a similar vain to puzzle pop, but that isn’t exclusive and has cross play.

Hi yes we agree lol. I loved PPT so much and I actually love both equally. I just want to play the kooky story and live with all the fun characters. Since PPT forced me to get familiar enough with Puyo to beat it, I have vested interest in playing more, but Puyo is maybe the hardest puzzle game I have ever been mediocre at and when all I could do in champions was get stompped online it really took all the fun out of it. At least with say Tetris 99 I sometimes finish top 10. I don't necessarily care about winning all the time, but constantly losing doesn't actually inspire me to get gud.

@@LabbyDragon I definitely get the frustration of coming into a niche game with a high skill ceiling, and not being able to keep up with everyone online who really knows what they're doing. Many of the games I play have matchmaking that literally just consists of "whoever's available", or even just Discord pings instead of anything in-game. And while I'm the kind of masochist who's used to cutting my teeth on that, I understand that once a game reaches this point it will be harder and harder to retain new players. But I think that is at least partially attributable to the state of the game having pushed away all but the most serious veteran players still left. My wish is that a good package with full crossplay can bring in a wide enough ranked matchmaking pool for beginners to be able to find each other.

Puzzle Fighter is rad! I think it's a little jank competitively just because of how cruel the RNG can be when it comes to circle pieces, and the game being reduced to Ken mirrors because asymmetry doesn't work in puzzle games is a bit sad. But I enjoy the game a lot casually! I've dabbled in a lot of different puzzle games over the years. Part of my frustration even stems from the fact that Puyo Puyo is more or less the last surviving IP anymore, and now that's slowly dying too. 25:07 & 30:10 parts of the video is making me kinda surprised that Sega hasn’t tried making a Puyo Puyo animated series yet. As it looks like the writing & the characters is what most outside of Japan love about the series. As my first experience with this series was with someone animating some cutscenes of Puyo Puyo Tetris & someone compiling them out of context. Like where’s the Netflix or whatever Apple has for streaming exclusive Puyo Puyo cartoon? The only other solution I can think of is translated re-releases of the first Madao Monogatari games in a desperate attempt to lure in RPG fans into the series. I’ve heard there’s some legal mumbo-jumbo making new games, but I’ve also heard that Sega has re-released the old ones several years ago. Neatly made video overall!

Puyo Puyo is a franchise that for my whole life i thought it would be obvious SEGA would take their IP and expand it through out the world with definitive titles but i didn't know how really weird and idioticly bad sega would treat this franchise, i seriously thought we already would've have a few definitive games by now that everyone can play and enjoy puyo puyo for what it is but that's the only case if we play Puyo Puyo Tetris and that's the biggest problem to notice, They can so easily release one puyo puyo game today with all of the essentials along with proper multiplayer with crossplay but i guess Puyo Puyo is not sonic so it doesn't matter to have a Puyo Puyo standard and definitive game for everyone in the WORLD to enjoy? This is tragic to me and i wish sega stops being so uncaring about some of their original IPs that have a lot of potential, it's just tragic. We should at least get a collection of puyo puyo games to introduce new audiences to let them know how it began, Tetris is doing it so if SEGA should be copying of a popular brand this one thing they should do or maybe a 2 on 1 deal with releasing the collection AND a new definitive Puyo Puyo game for anniversary, of course that's me speculating I didn't even know Puyo Puyo Puzzle Pop was a thing and it was an apple arcade exclusive, the existence of people disagreeing that it's a bad thing already doesn't give me much hope for the franchise's future I am a casual fan by the way, Loved playing mean bean machine, puyo puyo 2 on sega genesis, puyo puyo sun on old PC (i should add it to my steam deck ... i should add ALL of the puyo puyo games i can find on my steam deck) and while i haven't checked what puyo puyo has been up to lately i feel sad now how the franchise has been treated these last multiple years and yeah i also think Sega doesn't have faith in the series to succeed on it's own, that's why we don't have a definitive modern game that everyone can play and enjoy for Puyo Puyo, why would it take them this long to make a simple entry with it's basic essentials? unless they are not and they are working on the next cash grab

I think Sega only makes these games for the Japanese market and does not give a shit about us. Android phones have no market in Japan and mobile platforms as a whole are far more popular and widely accepted than anything else in Japan. There are so many games that release on Switch and mobile, even if it's a Japan only thing. This is why so many games would come out only for 3DS and now Switch (at least on console). Everyone has it and more gamers consistently play mobile games than they do here where there is a derisive attitude against them. Except for the really popular new fighting games, most fighting games don't have crossplay either. I think the reasoning behind this for the Japanese developers is that there aren't options in Japan. You buy a Switch and that's that unless you're an incel. I think the reason why crossplay has been really successful in the west is that people are encouraged to make their own choices and not just go with a crowd. For games that aren't on Switch, like Dragon Ball Sparking Zero, until very very recently Xbox didn't matter and Steam still doesn't matter. Every platform has an audience in the west when that's not the case in Japan. I'm not a fan of this, I'm just explaining my theory. Japanese developers tend to push the same excuse that it's very difficult to develop. I understand this since I don't understand networking and kinda know game development, but there are options that make things easier. Shredder's Revenge uses Epic Games servers for multiplayer on PC. It's not crossplay between PC and console, but between PC platforms. I'm sure since crossplay has been a thing over here for so long, there'd be easier ways of implementing it, but now I don't know what I'm talking about lol We need a Puyo Puyo collection like that Tetris collection cuz those old games have so much single player content alone lol

I feel like Sega does this thing where they have to attach a core game with another recognizable and popular game in order for it to get traction. PPT was a good way to allow people to play both styles and introduce Puyo to a wider audience, but I was afraid this would cause a huge divide or no retention to Puyo. My close friend is very passionate for Puyo and I used to see them struggle finding matches just Puyo Vs. Puyo on PPT or just a regular game on Champions and e-Sports due to the lack of crossplay; they ended up buying multiple copies across all platforms to keep up with the player base. I also feel like the other games like Virtua Fighter and the entire Model 2/3 catalog is forever locked behind the Yakuza series. People want a standalone Virtua Fighter collection with online crossplay or a release on the computer or a new game, but they won't commit to it. Yet the most recent thing they've done is re-released Virtua Fighter 3 to arcades (terrible idea due to region lock/no accessibility) and still put out the older games on Yakuza (no online, just local play). Again another example of attaching a series to something popular and recognizable since Sega just doesn't have faith in standalone releases. I think people should try to play Puyo Puyo through Fightcade. You'd be able to play the original arcade releases of Tsu or Fever with rollback and the client can be ran on a potato computer; even so, I don't know if that's accessible enough (?)

The only way for the Puyo Puyo series to recover is to release a universal people-pleaser: great netcode, cross-platform matching, story mode that continues where PP7 or PP20A left off, good character roster, many rulesets (Tsu, Fever, Endless Fever, maybe even a revival of Henshin), different singleplayer modes, and nice customization features. But with Quest and the iPhone game nobody gives a crap about, I know that Sonic Team is woefully unequipped or entirely apathetic about making that saving throw.

I still can’t believe that Puyo Sun only got an English translation through a shity Genesis port with only the versus mode, on a mini console nobody bought, truly priceless bullshit. I've been personally wanting to see a Puyo Puyo Origins compilation but what we REALLY need is Puyo Puyo Chronicle Plus. Updated story with additional characters and bigger roster. New prequel campaign exploring Ally and her origins and how she found Arle. Improved battle and side missions. And other bells and whistles. Here are my personal takes: -Had SEGA took a risk and left the Puyo worldbuilding intact in the Genesis days, it could've benefit Compile and even SEGA themselves. -I think it's time Puyo should just branch out to other genres.

After watching this entire video from beginning to end, i can tell that the majority of these takes are something i dont exactly resonate with all too much In fact i think they might be a bit too much for someone like me who enjoyed the first and second puyo tetris games despite only really playing and practicing tetris, doesn't mean i didn't try and play the standalone puyo games, 20th and chronicle are some of the best puyo games the series has to offer and I bought champions just to support the series cause despite not being GOOD at these games, i still love em to bits and wish they got more games here in the west

Couldn't agree with you more. I've basically just been reduced to either waiting for more fan translation projects to be completed and released by the many talented community members here (which doesn't help much in getting new people invested), or for SEGA to actually put their foot forward and start caring about Puyo on its own again, even if it's just porting Puzzle Pop to mainstream platforms. But considering what SEGA has usually done to revive their dormant IP over the years, they've either made divisive releases that split their respective IP's fanbase, or they make a decent game that exclusively releases on a platform no one cares about and becomes legally unavailable after a few years. Definitely a case of actions speaking louder than words ever could.

My first exposure to Puyo Puyo was PPT. I entirely agree with your points - I can't access this game at all because PPT is essentially "Tetris with Puyo on the side". I became a puyo fan shortly after PPT came out in the west. a UK-based community sprouted around it and i was one of the earliest people that was a part of it. SEGA europe pushed competitive ppt quite hard here in the UK for a while, and I was part of hosting multiple tournaments for it. being forced to play pvt always irked me, especially as puyo just doesn't fare well against tetris as a gamemode. puyo is simply much slower than modern tetris is, and sadly i think the idea of mixed vs was doomed from the start because of that. when PPC came out in the west finally, we heavily tried to get people to move to that due to how bad ppt was competitively. the problem is, nobody wants to buy ANOTHER game that has less content. i don't think there were even many western ppc tournaments, they all sticked to ppt despite the flaws, due to nobody wanting to buy the game. then, PPT2 was revealed and to be honest? we were all very excited for it. official puyo accounts were hyping it up for a long time before launch... just for the game to finally come out and it was such a disappointment. even the story mode is a rehash of the last game. and it was MORE buggy somehow?? how did this even happen?? the launch of PPT2 marked the start of puyo burnout for real imo. people were begging sega to just make a standalone puyo game with crossplay, or hell, just add crossplay to ppt2?? sadly, after the launch sega pretty much fell completely silent. ppt2 didn't get many post launch updates (unlike ppt1) the reveal of puzzle pop just... kind of marked the end of people's interest in puyo, i feel. they made it so exclusive a very small amount of people would ever try it (apple users that are actually willing to pay for arcade??). I understand it's for money, they're a business at the end of the day, but I just... think it was a very bad move. speaking of money... puyo puyo quest (the mobile game) actually makes an INSANE amount of money for how little content they actually add. i used to be genuinely addicted to it and spent a depressing amount of money on it myself. for a game about collecting literal pngs. sega doesn't put much effort into making new puyo content because they can do the bare minimum in puyo quest and make a ton of money off it. it's honestly really sad. this entire situation makes me sad, honestly. puyo puyo deserves so much more than what sega does for it, and it's a shame this is where we're at now. i want puyo puyo to thrive both as a casual and competitive game, i really do.

this is a well put together video! i've only started playing puyo puyo recently through puyo puyo tetris 2 on switch, i haven't really tried online play yet as i'm still learning a lot of the fundamental puyo puyo stuff but when i do i would definitely be willing to give puyo puyo champions a shot since it is a very cheap game that goes on sale for even cheaper quite often from what i see whenever i look at the switch eshop despite only starting recently i've grown to really love puyo puyo and it is saddening to hear how much sega neglects the franchise and believes the name on it's own would never sell, so they have to bundle it in with a subscription nobody wants or have it crossover with tetris for any chance of a western audience i'm sure sega will keep putting out puyo puyo games but whether or not they will put in the effort to have it be more of a household name in the west is unlikely from the sounds of things, i would love crossplay so i could get my friends who only use their pc to play games haha

I returned to Puyo Puyo Tsu after swearing off the franchise due to the fans and the current line of games not appealing to me at all. It still holds up. I dunno, maybe it's nostalgia, maybe it's the cast, but I would say SEGA's output on the franchise took a dive after Quest was released. Not Puyo Tetris. They've all felt like lukewarm clones of 20th in terms of the roster and setting. The crossplay and exclusivity thing is also insane/stupid, like why?

I can pretty much agree or at least understand the points made. I do think Puyo Tetris could have helped and is a fine game, but it ended up just fuelling a diffrent issue. As much as I like the second, I can agree it’s pretty pointless objectively. I have played Puzzle Pop and it’s pretty much a game that could have been great, but alas Apple Arcade killed any chance. The real copium take is they are buying time to be able to make a bigger puyo game, but I know it’s unlikely. In my mind, there are two outcomes to this. 1: Sega eventually does make a good, standard puyo game (cross play or not, it’d at least be something) 2: This becomes yet another game that gets carried by its community because their cooperate overlords won’t feed them good food.

This is a great video, and was a great overview of the rise, and eventual stagnant, painful limbo this series has gone through in the 2010's to today. As a Puyo Puyo fan, I hope the best for this series as well, and a standalone game like the old ones would be a treat! The fact I didn't even know about the Puzzle Pop game to begin with... yeah, that's all I need to know that wasn't the best decision. Making it an Apple exclusive as well? No point in getting a service for only a few games I want to play, especially when i don't own them. (Would love for you to cover the whole "Game Streaming thing" one day, as you seem to know a lot about that as well) Overall, you've hit the nail on the head with every answer, and how money... of course money, being the root of it. Also, seeing that graveyard of Sega IP's killed me in the inside, both in a funny, but also sad way. Of course, there was an announcement of Sega IP's coming back, but like you said, we'll only see how it really is when the game comes out. Honestly, the way your passionate about Puyo Puyo is similar to how I'm passionate about Sega as a company, and of course Puyo Puyo (Along with it's many, many IP's) is a part of that. Sorry if it feels like this was a mini rant, but I want to say again, thank you for making this. Hopefully, Sega can prove us wrong, and make a game that'll bring the fanbase together, and Puyo Puyo be recognized as a puzzle giant, once and for all!

If Sega bought the rights to Madou Monogatari from Compile Heart, they would be able to incorporate all the lore from that into modern Puyo Puyo. It might not make the series extremely popular or fix any of the competitive issues, but it would definitely get more nerds (like me) interested in buying the games. Did you know Puyo Puyo Quest's story mode lampshades how much MaMo lore was lost? An interdimensional traveler OC tries to find the name of the world Arle originally came from, only to be dragged away right before she can get an answer. They know.
@KaratekidSMW

Honestly, I wouldn't want to see that old Madou lore come back to the series. Not only does it create story problems (they already have to create all of these contrived story loops for Arle and friends, something they should've just reconnected all the way back in Fever), but Puyo Puyo is a way different series now than it was in the 90's. It generally has a much more lighthearted and friendly tone to it, the much darker Madou elements would REALLY clash with that. We even see some remnants of that in existing character interactions (Witch's psychoticness, Schezo wanting to take Sig's arm, etc), its done for black comedy and feels extremely out of place.

I think the lack of cross play is one of the biggest problems for the series, having to buy the same game for different platforms. How it would be implemented, I have no idea. The game might have to be reworked in a certain infrastructure, or engine that would allow for cross play to be feasibly possible, little do I know about how cross play works. I wish it could be the norm.

Nice video, I can tell you really care about this. Some more attention could've been paid to the audio side of this video since the visuals are mostly supplementary (there are some clearly flubbed takes, some awkward pauses, and a change of music after a while would've been nice) but the actual substantive writing was compelling. Me, personally, I played Puyo Puyo Tetris as a kid who was dazzled by watching old Wumbo clips and never really engaged with Puyo because it was hard for me to approach compared to the very accessible Tetris (whose high skill ceiling eluded me too, but its low skill floor was appealing lol). I haven't kept up with the series much, but I did hear about the lackluster release of both Champions and PPT2, and I can't blame you for being disgruntled. Something that comes to mind for me is how, competitively, Tetris wasn't that far off from Puyo in terms of struggle for a long time. It basically ruled the game they shared, but PPT was itself not perfect, and I remember lots of discontent among people who took the game seriously about how The Tetris Company and Sanrio weren't doing anything with the IP. The solution for them appears to have been going open source, making their own legally distinct sites, and playing the game they wanted to play. I wonder if Puyo Puyo could follow their lead, not to imply that anyone is obligated to do the work of game developers *for* them and save an IP just because they want to play it, but it seems to have worked for Tetris. Is open source Puyo a viable future?

I feel you dude! I’ve loved this game franchise for 13 years and I still love to play the 15th Anniversary and the 20th Anniversary to this day. From how long I’ve played these games for, it always made me upset, when I was younger, to not be able to find friends who like or even know Puyo Puyo. Every time I played it in front of people they would always say “Oh! It’s a rip off of Tetris” which was always disheartening. When Puyo Puyo Tetris came out, I felt like my worst nightmare came true. It’s really upsetting to see SEGA take this game that I love so much and watch them burn it to the ground. Honestly, what surprised me with the video is when you discussed about the English ports of the game. I had no idea y’all had to wait longer for some of these games to get translated. I always thought they were released at the same time (if you couldn’t guess, I only play on the original Japanese version). This new knowledge kinda makes me feel sadder. :( This video also made me reminisce of the time I happily played with my friends that would give the game a try. I always beat them but it honestly warmed my heart to see them actually enjoy it. My point is, is that I fully agree with you that it would be better now for SEGA to just make Puyo Puyo a stand alone game again because it can genuinely intrigue new players to join in on the fun! Anyway, I talked too much on this comment. Great video! ✨

I think the biggest thing that pains me about Puyo Puyo is that it's one of those games that Sega owns, and has soooo much potential, but Sega just won't do anything with it. And the reason it matters that it's Sega in particular is because they also own Sonic, one of the most popular game franchises in history. If Sega would just use Sonic as a tool to put these other games they own into the limelight, like Puyo Puyo, Jetset Radio, Ristar, and a ton of other games that have better things to do than collect dust, then Sega would have a huge catalog of popular games! And it's not like Puyo Puyo hasn't crossed over with Sonic before- Mean Bean Machine exists as a reskin of the original game, and Sonic Mania has a Puyo Puyo boss in it! And those other games I mentioned would fit in PERFECTLY with the Sonic IP, along with plenty of others that I'm sure would be very easy to implement. Sega could even take the Streets of Rage approach and sell the trademark to an indie studio that actually wants to do something with the games, because at least in that case the games are still getting a chance, right?? It's just such a shame

I bought PPT1 on switch with leftover gas money my mom gave me, I had alot of fun with it but it wouldn’t be until 15th Anniversary where my love for the franchise SKYROCKETED. It was my main comfort game for the majority of 2022. Fast forward to now and it’s ehhh, it just kinda exists, as sad as it is to say. Also when Puzzle Pop launched, we all thought “Don’t worry, Puyo24 will hopefully launch later this year.” Now? I’m actually starting to doubt it was even real to begin with, as the only known evidence of its existence as far back as I remember was Feli’s VA tweeting about recording new lines for the character. But I honestly think it was meant for Puzzle Pop instead. Who knows what Sega will do with the franchise in the future, and with what you said about Sega really only cares about what’s more profitable for them in the end, we might as well end up with PPT3. But the one thing I do wanna see even though I know that will NEVER happen is some sort of legacy collection split into several volumes, or hell, even a Cartoon/movie would even do the wonders of all of the characters in the games.

On the apple arcade thing, Sega has been doing a lot with games either on mobile or on Netflix/apple arcade. Iirc for the specific deal for Puzzle Pop, Apple came to Sega to make a deal for them to make some exclusive games for them, being Sonic Dream Team, Puzzle Pop, and 1 other one that isn't out yet but i think it's the runored Sega Tennis game. In Puyo's case as well, there was a article around the game's release that they were already working on a new Puyo mobile game to try and attract the US players before Apple came.

huge wall of text incoming from someone who thinks they'll actually make a 35th anniversary game here we go... so, honestly I'm pretty hopeful that this whole Chronicle unlocalized to Tetris 2 to Puzzle Pop exclusivity is just a series of unfortunate coincidences that paints this picture of vitriol that doesn't really exist I can explain this to myself that this is just a case of SEGA realizing nobody especially not westerners want to buy 3DS games anymore, that the Puyo art team was unsatisfied with the art presentation in the Tetris game that happened to become the global darling so they just did an enhanced remaster sneakily marketed as a sequel (exaggerated) and that Apple approached SEGA for an exclusivity deal so they made this puzzle pop game out of recycled assets of their other failure game (exaggerated... the story writing department did a lot of heavy lifting) Weirdly I would say Champions having no crossplay has to be the biggest blunder of everything that went down after the PPT localization, they make this game basically nothing but multiplayer and they leave that out? I will say the Puzzle Pop ranked having bots is evil as hell but it feels so strangely out of character for SEGA to do it makes me wanna say Apple demanded this? This could probably be like actually proven by just looking at online matchmaking in other Apple Arcade games but, surprise surprise, I don't have a single Apple product, if you're willing to look into this for the greater morale of us Puyo fans, please be my guest

I actually really like mixed versus! Its unbalanced but its quite fun at least at low levels, it feels really good to make a chain on a tetris player, but I understand your pain, idk why they didn't just include a way to only que for 1 type of game- and it sucks that they thought making a sequel at twice the price would fix it. I kinda wanna buy champions but I right now stand as the best puyo puyo player in my IRL circles (friends and Family) and part of me doesn't want to shell out 10 bucks just to get my ass kicked by people that actually sweat online and I know thats entirely a me problem but it is also a legit problem... do enough people play Puyo Puyo Champions to buy it in 2024? (going on 2025?) or should I wait... more... I really really want a free to play puyo puyo steam game, even if it was shitty BUT IF IT WAS PUYO PUYO AND PEOPLE PLAYED IT, PEOPLE WOULD PLAY IT :sob: edit: Okay now I am mad at this apple arcade thing, they could just make a game on the both the apple store and google play and you would actually have a player base, the game is so simple the formula was cracked in the 90s I don't understand how hard it is to just make a workable online for it ;-----; the fact that SEGA did the FUCKING FAKE BOT SCAM IS AWFUL WTF?!? You ask "why did sega make a second crossover instead of a standalone game" but I raise you a better question "Why did sega make a buggy worse copy pasted sequel that would kill both games and champions online instead of just updating Puyo Puyo tetris 1 to have crossplay" I genuinely think more people are willing to learn puyo puyo than you give credit but 1 the games "lessons" aren't gonna be appealing to new players and you have to do a sizable chunk of the campaign before you get to learning puyo puyo! If in 2024 Puyo Puyo tetris 1 was still 20 bucks and had an active steam online with crossplay with Switch Sega could literally print money on cosmetics and other BS. I also think Puyo Puyo On mobile (not apple arcade REAL crossplay all smartphones) WOULD GO WELL, especially if they kept the file size low for cheaper devices. I know that my main experience getting into puyo puyo was from playing puyo puyo tsu on an emulator on my phone because just like tetris puyo puyo is a great game on the go. And my Mom really wants to get into it but every time we play I unfairly kick her ass, and she keeps asking me if thieres a mobile version and theres just isn't, theres no way to play this classic game online for a large audience of casual players SO THIER NEVER WILL be a active competitive audience!!!!! It really pisses me off how simple it would be for Sega to pick up the slack they literally have 3 options make puyo puyo tetris 1 good again make a great crossplay stanalone puyo game on everything or make a puyo puyo mobile game And honestly if they just did the last two it would save the franchise but they don't care because if its not sonic they don't give a fuck about the west

I'm playing PPT2 right now. An artist on Newgrounds got me to try out a Puyo game after I commented on some art she posted of the characters. I had only played Mean Bean Machine prior to that (like back in the 90s, that is). Having some Tetris mixed in there helped me play Puyo in small, manageable doses, but I really just bought it over other games because I figured it was the newest one not on Apple Arcade and could provide me with all of the updates and play modes added to the series throughout the years. I was not aware of Puyo's current state. I thought it was niche but still pretty active. Guess I could wishlist a few more Puyo games and provide myself a more well-rounded experience... and maybe learn more about the lore. I wish they had a better diversity in design though. Most characters look like the same person in different clothes. Not enough cool and unique figures like Fish With Legs.

Hey, great video! It's neat hearing about the history of a series with such a convoluted history in the west. I also loved watching Puyo Puyo at Combo Breaker. However, I do disagree with you on one point. I think PPT1 introduced a lot of casual audiences (including myself) to Puyo Puyo in the west in the first place. I had never heard of the game prior to ppt, so I think piggybacking off of Tetris wasn't the worst decision. I think the idea behind Puyo vs Tetris or Swap were good in theory and just poorly executed. I think the bigger issue isn't the existence of PPT, but that neither game was handled that well. Having separate matchmaking, better balancing, better online, fewer bugs, etc. would have made the experience of the first game much better. And if PPT1 wasn't a cash grab, PPT2 almost certainly was. Even for the Tetris community the series didn't age well, Tetrio is vastly more popular for competitive players. Swap is still my favourite gamemode to play in PPT, though, because it allows me to experience the best of both games, but I did enjoy hearing someone passionate about their game and community specifically.

As I said in my original essay: "If PPT is what got you into Puyo Puyo, I’m happy for you. I can’t deny that the crossover at least helped bring the game to a wider audience, and if the series had been able to move forward afterwards I would’ve accepted it as a necessary evil and wouldn’t be writing this essay today." Making one (1) crossover might have been fine if they handled it better. While I think the execution had a lot of issues when it comes to onboarding beginners, and I think some of those issues may even be unavoidable as long as you're juxtaposing a difficult game next to a familiar game, at least it is exposure. No such thing as bad publicity, as they say. Really, the simplest thing that Sega could've done differently was just to follow up PPT1's commercial success by selling a full main series title soon afterwards. As long as the timing was right, I think that could've done well. But they handled it in the worst way possible by... not doing that. They waited too long to do nothing, and now I fear it may be too late to pull players who bounced off it already back in.

Exclusivity works when it's meant to sell a your service or console as your flagship. Puyo puyo is not that. It's a series barely a thing here unlike something like mario.i generally think Sega could be nearly their old selves if they just went for it sometimes.

Hey, is that Meteos music? love Meteos. I've only dabbled a little in Puyo Puyo myself, so I appreciate your perspective as a hardcore fan. It's a shame that Sega squandered the opportunity to expand the audience for the franchise after it got a surge in popularity with PPT1.

With the characters and feel of the world being the one thing carrying the fandom spaces, at least you would expect the new Madou Monogatari game to make use of that and maybe boost Puyo Puyo back in return a little. And then the game uses a completely original human cast despite having access to the existing one, and the story is being made by the most divisive Compile era writer.

as a casual fan I didn’t even buy PPT2 because of how little content it had. not to mention these games have increasingly worse rosters (the mobile game characters lol) and the same reused art assets. the aesthetic is one of the biggest appeals to me but I really do not care for the post 15th anniversary art style lol, it feels too sanitized. but as a fighting game player I completely understand the importance of crossplay, it is actively ridiculous at this point that devs like capcom and sega skimp out on it for smaller games like puyo and capcom’s classic fg collections

Champions was the one with the terrible roster of overdesigned mobile characters. Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 had by far one of the best rosters in the series when it got its updates - 40+ characters, all of the staples are there, hell you even have Sonic! All it really needs is one of the Skeletons (Skeleton T. or Dapper Bones) and Minotauros and it'd be perfect1

Get the fan translation of Puyo Puyo Chronicle, if you can. The game has a full adventure that uses a great concept of Puyo battling against groups of enemies. I like it over Puyo Puyo Box's Quest Mode.

I personally think that the best way to gain an audience in the west isn't just having a story mode, but making something with some SERIOUS story focus, to an extent that content creators have not just interesting potential for videos, from the standpoint of being a beginner themselves, but that a full series is feasibly from the standpoint of the creator. Not just little blurbs from Puyo Pop Fever, not just a short story with a convenient end, I mean a full saga, perhaps have some smaller non-puyo puyo element to pad it out and make it less repetitive, or even something like starting out with only 2 colors and upping color count over time, or SOMETHING to make it substantial enough to make it a watchable, AND playable game even outside competitive play... The quality of the writing would be the most important part because we already know the gameplay works, we already know the gameplay is fun, and we already know how much the west values good storytelling. Use story as that foot in the door, or trojan horse, to get people hooked on the gameplay.... and from there just make sure any future releases at least have some story, and make sure that whatever story is there doesn't suck, even in any multiplayer focused games
