The State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs was a short-lived state that proclaimed independence from the Austro-Hungarian Empire in October 1918 when the First World War was ending. It followed the dissolution of Austria-Hungary near the end of WW1. Ideas of a Yugoslav state date back from the 1800s. In 1914 the Serbia Nis Declaration was issued that made a South Slav State one of the war aims of Serbia. In 1917 the Corfu Declaration was issued in which Nikola Pašić and Ante Trumbić (who was from the Yugoslav Committee) wanted to strive for a South Slav State: Yugoslavia.
