i'm mostly a single player gamer, but mostly because i have always had slow internet and these games in the beginning were always subscribe which meant paying monthly forever and i was too poor, so i stuck with the single player games, at one point i got to try out an MMO, it was ESO, and though it's a very beautiful game, it's just not what i liked in the game, i frequently ask myself if there is a way of playing the game without all the other people playing, and there's usually no solution to that, so i just stay away from MMO's in general.

I've noticed that all the MMOs i've played over the years have a six year lifecycle. If a MMO doesn't shut down in its first six years of service, then it'll receive THAT update. We all know THAT update, and we all hate THAT update. We try to protest, but our voices get drowned out by THOSE players. Playing a MMO is like an abusive relationship, and the only winning move is refusing to play.

I'm a BDO junkie. It's got it's problems, but it's by miles the most fun mmorpg if you enjoy non-tab-target combat. The biggest issue is immersive questing for beginners. They need to add more battles over-all to the questing, and focus more on the amazing combat.

This was great - thanks Sawman for your wrap up on the year and thanks for the year of great videos overall! There are a lot of MMO's out there and it is simply impossible to play all of them or even most of them - I know I only get to try a few each year max - so I appreciate you dropping in on so many and giving your honest thoughts. Cheers.

hey, just a bdo addict here. I wanted to chime in. I like your videos and i'm sorry that a lot of outspoken bdo people reacted so negatively to prior coverage you've provided on the game. BDO is in an interesting spot right now: while the 2023 summer saw a huge boost in new player interest, since then many have moved on and the company has made some large and sudden changes especially to the world pvp & guild war systems - some changes which are quite polarizing. Please keep an eye on the game in 2024 to follow whatever impact this all has -- some people I talk to are pessimistic about the game's longterm future, some people are optimistic, but only time will tell.

As someone with limited amount of time because I'm pushing 30 I picked up GW2 after more than 10 years since I last played and I got really hooked because of the amazing open world, horizontal progression and fun combat. I managed to complete HOT, POF, SOTO, got a sky scale and full ascended gear on some of the characters. I even played a lot of PVP but the poor matchmaking and lack of balance really take away from the experience. I'm hopeful they find a way to port the game to UE5 because 2.5 is showing its age and I don't see a clear path for them to create a GW3 just because of the scale of GW2. Some aspects of the game really put a smile on my face like how everything is shared between different characters which in turn focuses you on the overall progression on the account itself. I definitely see some downgrades in the newest expansion and I'm noticing they are going a bit harder on micro transactions but still you can convert gold -> premium currency. I would love to farm Legendary Gear but I just don't have the time.

There is no accuracy for something like this. Black Desert, Final Fantasy XIV and ESO are also available on console. Unless all of the companies disclose numbers there is no real way to see what is on decline.

100% agree. Only games like New World can you truly see their population. This is why i wanted to include some of the community perspectives and other outside facts like profit margins.
@visoroverwatch324711 ай бұрын
I play BDO everyday for hours and its in decline. The only reason why it ain't dead is because of AFK mechanics which encourage players never to log off and Twitch Drops rewards that make players open twitch and watch a streamer and mute it and minimize it and claim the drop later. So Twitch and SteamCharts arent a great way to tell if the game is doing great or not. In my opinion, it's pretty close to GW2 where its just maintaining its current playerbase, while the 90% of the new players quit within 30 days because they're smart enough to realize this P2W Timesink isn't it.
@Sazandora63511 ай бұрын
The events in FFXIV are largely barely worth mentioning and typically are just a short fetch quest that gives out some exclusive rewards, though it does still create a FOMO factor for a lot of people. The only "major" piece of content that they have coming is the 6.55 patch in January, then it's just more short events until the next expansion, though I'm honestly having doubts if I'll keep sticking around as my interest has hit rock bottom in the past few months.
@sawmanUK11 ай бұрын
I find it quite surprising considering how much praise it's had over the years. Do you think it's just player burnout or are the devs just not forthcoming with decent content?
@Sazandora63511 ай бұрын
@@sawmanUK I'd say it's both. Endwalker in particular skipped out on including exploratory zones, which were huge, sprawling maps that told a story while also being a place to grind for various unique rewards and a significant source of replay value in both Stormblood and Shadowbringers. The game overall has been largely dug in on following a very predictable content pattern since the first expansion, but the problem is that any content that falls outside of the "norm" doesn't seem to be necessarily guaranteed to even return or continue receiving updates as time goes on when they really ought to be continuously building on the formula, not shuffling things in/out. Much of said content is one and done and lacks replay value outside of trying get gear upgrades from weekly drops (Which may not even be relevant to clearing a new piece of content in the future) and/or getting a rare drop. 6.0 also marked the end of the main story arc that started in 2.0, which, at least for me, has left that distinct sense of emptiness you tend get after finishing a really long piece of media, and the new stories that have come in the following patches haven't done anything to shake that off by virtue of just...not being that interesting and it's kindling doubts that even 7.0 is going to manage to captivate me in the way the game used to.
@Eugromlol11 ай бұрын
@@sawmanUK Definitely a burn out from me I started playing from 2.0 and the past couple of battle content patches were just terrible, the fights were just not fun the light dungeons are so uninspiring the raids offer nothing but story and the rewards from the savage dungeons are pointless lmao. If the game had a little bit more side progression and tier level to it I think it would make it more interesting. The ultimate fights are fun but once you have done them you sort of dont want to do them anymore just from burnout.

@@sawmanUKthere's a lot of things around endwalker. It completed its story. The post patch content doesn't have a long life cycle, since it's mostly just one and done type of content. As a returning player to New World about a month before new expansion, I really considered it got high point but why did you ignore the last quarter of the game's state? Game lost all the players it got with expansion and lost even more at the moment. It is not a dead game but Season 4 with new bugs and lacking content and 6 months road map looking grim, it didn't end 2023 in "high" point. It is in all low point surprisingly after doing so well in first three quarters of 2023.
@sawmanUK11 ай бұрын
Good question. It lost players after brimstone too and it’s similar to other MMO’s in that sense. The fact that a paid for expansion actually brought in a lot of people is super positive and the addition on mounts which has been long sort after it’s a positive. It’s had bugs but the turn around time to fix them compared to other MMO’s I’ve played has been super quick. PvP feels in a better state with influence races and the addition of the global cross server dungeon finder is a nice addition. Like I said the roadmap isn’t the most exciting but it’s not the finite as to what they will introduce. I think it’s honestly on a positive but there is a lot of negativity from some content creators. I just know in my circle we’re all liking it
@juffe_h166611 ай бұрын

@emrahkahraman349511 ай бұрын
@@juffe_h1666 The problem is they already introduced new problems with some of these new systems. On top of that they introduced so many game breaking bugs with new season that they keep updating game every two days almost. And if you didn’t have enough, these updates are 70 gb each. They simply cannot patch it either. And all of these happened in spite of them cutting 70% of content from season 4 to make it a quality update. You can understand this is the case because until May, bug fixes are primary thing in the roadmap. So, no it is not looking good at the moment. These are the reasons that put the game at a spot that the player count is all time low. Is it the final nail in the coffin? Not really. However, if this big announcement is console launch and they will not deliver updates to the game during this period due to resources going to console port development, game might suffer heavy consequences. There are already couple MMOs coming in 2024 and new expansions to existing ones. People can stop playing New World altogether

There's been a mass exodus since 2020 with only the most dedicated players still trudging along...and the few new players who ignorantly stumble into it.

Sure you will have your usual should you play in 2024 and some other constants like the Friday vendor, but overall a lot of big names have stopped caring, as its no longer rewarding to make content. The only people who care are the ones who milk the OAPS out of patreon and twitch money lol The devs have been great at ignoring player feedback whilst management increases monetisation. All they care about is project kestrel. It's the 10 year anniversary in 2024 for this game, there will be a lot of hype and advertisement to bring more new players in, but i guarantee a lot of old players will move on

New Servers still havent solved the issue with lag in pvp, which has been an issue for 10 years now. Crazy to think they first advertised the game as 200 vs 200 on screen and they have NEVER been able to achieve this. You would think Todd Howard was running this game lol I think fixing the cheap crowns was 100% only done so they can raise the prices, hence why everything has gone up in the crown store. A new class is great but its also been a year of less content. A New Class doesnt fix the issue of doing the same old dungeons over and over...speaking of which, I know some people love the idea of an endless dungeon but thats going to get boring reallll fast. They are really good at getting new players in, its one of their biggest achievements, but the simple fact is the lack of vertical progression, challenging overland and pvp content makes it a very shallow experience, unless you like ESO lore...which lets be frank, has been butchered with the inclusion of stupid sh... like shiny mounts and a card game no one ever heard of @@davidhurcombe6505

"gw2 the most consistent mmo" wtf are u on about, the devs have constantly changed what type of content they want to do for the game during its lifespan first the idea was to make it a arena pvp game, then a large scale pvp game, then they made dungeons and said they wouldn't do raids, then they said they wouldn't do expansions and would instead do live content updates in the world that changed over time "living world", then they abandoned dungeons and did fractals, then they abandoned the living world idea (but kept the name for future story drops cause why not), then they did raids, then they abandoned raids, then they did strike missions, then they stopped doing strike missions and made a new mode called dragon response missions, then they abandoned drms and made strikes again, then they said they would put massive focus on world vs world, then they stopped putting focus on wvw, then they brought back fractals after 3 years of nothing Have you even played gw2 regularly? This is like the opposite of consistency. The new change they made to their release schedule to release a smaller expansion each year instead of a big one after a few years has the goal to increase consistency, but historically this game has been anything but. The only consistent thing about it is the loyal playerbase and popularity. That being said, for anyone reading who hasn't played it, I recommend it strongly if you like open world content. It's the best mmo for open world stuff.

Hard disagree that New World listen to their playerbase - just read the comments on their latest dev video (kzbin.info/www/bejne/npmrhnyph5uAjck) they have blanked players for ages regarding a new OPR map, shake-up to the way the game is played and something to combat the lop-sidedness of some teams getting lots of healers/tanks who stunlock - matchmaking is severely needed as it just isn't fun playing a match with 6 healers vs 1. They don't really have fun, worthwhile dailies to do, making gold is extremely difficult yet there are too many gold sinks. Crafting dailies and the inventory need an overhaul, a lot of stuff is complicated to the point where it's a chore, and honestly, the weight limit reminds me of a survival game not an MMO lol They are a skeleton crew at this point and the next 6 months really show nothing in terms of actual content, yet they seem to be prepping to do a console release perhaps (More $$$) I don't see why they'd add controller support otherwise since almost everyone uses M&K on PC anyway, that would be a really huge waste of resources. I think ESO had an okay year IMO.... A lot of new players due to Epic store release, new class was very fun, endless/infinite archive is not something I could sit and do for hours, but it's a good way to get rewards for stuff like leads, retired/rare monster style pages, etc and the daily is a good one to do to stack currency for future stuff (kind of like undaunted keys). If they added an OPR-style flag PVP map on ESO it would be super fun but it will never happen. Agree that monetization is utterly insane at this point, they have even monetized player recall/travel animations with some costing as much as standard crate mounts (400 gems) which is probably 80-100 crates worth of gems. Gross.

Then they moved the servers to the east coast increasing west coast players ping to near unplayable and broke the game for east coast players given the game was designed around 50ms when it was in Texas, dropping below that gives those players the appearance of macros and cheats. Anything action related you can't have above 60-70ms latency which is what they did. Hence they lost a lot of players from south america, west coast US, SEA etc. Last I dropped in, it's bots in spvp and win trading with the low pop and WVW is laggy as eso with the same couple thousand ppl playing which is why they merged the servers.

The problem with FFXIV is that the devs spent the entire expansion pretending it's a single-player FF just because it has a great story. Major expansion features for casual players were basically bot NPCs to solo old dungeons, content that amounts to just watching cutscenes for a free reward (including the expansion's legendary-tier weapon set, I wish I was making that up), a 5v5 PvP mode you can't even queue with friends, multi-path dungeons you can just do alone, and a solo-only vacation island that really wants to be Animal Crossing but is more like a WoW Garrison rethemed around farming. Outside of the two usual raid series and the hardcore content there has been utterly nothing for people who actually want to play an actual MMORPG and that's why FFXIV is on a downward trend. The good news is that the devs seem to be back-pedaling pretty hard on the new solo direction. They cancelled their plans to bring the bot NPCs to the 8-man story content, they're bringing back large-scale open world content, the pointless vacation island is getting replaced with something for groups of players, etc. But what's done is done and the current expansion is probably going to be remembered as a low point for casual players. (Except those who are exclusively solo players I guess.)
