I think the biggest issue with Demon Slayer is the gap in quality of figures. You have your ok quality low price figures and like b-tier mid price figures then the really high quality stuff was WAY too expensive

Kinda a shame in all honesty. I told a friend of mine to get me a 2020 SEGA Nezuko for Christmas that was on sale for $26, thinking that she was popular due to the show being the GOAT.

The Albedo 1/4 B-style figure was also talked about a lot because TOM kept delaying the figure because it was being fulfilled in the US from their North American supplier, Ultra Tokyo Connection, rather than directly from Japan and that company apparently had a ton of issues with getting things shipped. It ended up getting delayed month after month for nearly a year. So that's something that sparks a lot of conversation on MFC. That and once it was found to be a surprise cast off, the price skyrocketed for her, especially on the aftermarket, which I'm guessing is why she got a weird re-release but with a black bunny suit instead of a white one like the newer Narberal and Shalltear figures. New Jersey's bunny figure also had that stupid base that was like 5 ugly and awkward discs for her hair. People were not happy about that.

I never understood the bunny style craze in the first place. To be real most anime girl characters designs relie heavily on clothes to even differentiate them from each other. You put them in a bunny fit and they all start to look the same on the shelf to the point where ive seen people struggle to figure out who the characters even are lol

Was fun listening to you talk about it! I've noticed some patterns over the years, so it's about what I figured. I do admit that I own many that have tanked, but I think the most hurtful one was my Demon Slayer Akaza Aniplex figure (mainly because I bought him local at the time)... but his quality was pretty disappointing in his hair, unable to get him flush onto the base and having a small gap between his abs and pants. Sadly I only got some money back, return was not an option.

Oh hell yeah, the figure stock market goes crazy! But honestly great, fun video. I’ve always kinda had some of these questions in mind but never did the research. Another good category if there’s a follow up to this would be; most popular/ profitable in aftermarket manufacturer product lines. For example Kotobukiya has the product line Artfx J that from my understanding trends towards high aftermarket value.

That was a pretty fascinating video! I'm an Asuna figure collector & it surprises me that she's #3 in most popular character figure manufacture graph & in the middle (#8) in the MFC owners list. I thought Asuka or Rei had way more figures due to me seeing a whole section of them at my local figure store. However, I'm not surprised at all about Miku & Rem dominating the market since they're practically like Barbie & I just got my first prize figures of them for Christmas.
@StrayScouterАй бұрын
when you said you were going to show which series dropped most in price I immediately thought "Demon slayer". They tanked SO HARD. I remember when the nezuko nendoroid just came out and she was expensive af in the aftermarket, but then they rereleased her like 2 or three times. There was just too much and tbh the quality was "meh". Kanao's figure was really disappointing. The paintjob wasn't on the same level as the prototype and thats also why she tanked
@Shunpon77Ай бұрын
I bought the Kanao figure after it dropped to 5,000 yen on Amiami. It looks great, but i wouldn't have bought it if not for the sale. Quality wise it was definitely worth >10,000 yen.

28:37 - If you're building a dataset of figures and figure prices, one thing I'm interested in knowing is, how much more the upward trend of figure prices over last few years compares to the annual rate of inflation. Other variables to observe for correlation would be the cost of crude oil and labour costs in China, seeing as how most of these are manufactured there. I hear that figure prices have gone up dramatically since the pandemic while quality has remained the same. Very curious to know if this is due to manufacturers knowing the that market is willing to pay more (higher demand during the pandemic and possibly post-pandemic) or if an increase in the cost of production and inflation has actual played more of a role.

I had so many figures that I PO tank just a few months after I had purchased them in 2023 that I stopped PO altogether. The 15th Anniversary Miku is talked about because: - Price is high 40k+ JPY on release. People were skeptical of the price until it was released. - Global Freaks bankruptcy or whatnot resulted in many people not getting their preorder. - The current After market price of it is now at least double around 100k JPY.

I would say that Sakurajima Mai is pretty popular even without that white bunny skewing the data, but that could be because I have 6 figures of her in my closet with 2 still comming. In her case it's also worth noting that she pretty much exclusively recieves figures from her show with people begging for other characters. But then still ending up buying all the Mai figures.

Topnotch content and analysis! I haven't really "lost" in this market since I subsisted on bootlegs and only recently started collecting originals, and many of my favorites were from admittedly mediocre shows/games thus I was able to get most of them for almost half their MSRP. One thing to look out for when 2024 closes are 1.) Kitagawa Marin and 2.) Gundam Witch from Mercury. Did they go up in value? Or did they overproduced, thus tank?

I feel like original characters are the next to be oversaturated and tank. There`s just so many with the Chinese manufacturers and people are buying for the price, but at the end of the day they`re not particularly good designs and have no staying value.

I'd be curious to know what companies made the most figures and how they fared against each other in terms of aftermarket growth or decline
@Sizemore911Ай бұрын
Very informative and well researched video, I really enjoyed it. Not too surprising seeing Miku reign as the top most figure as she is so versatile and can have many different artist interoperate her in a variety of unique styles. With the other characters I feel like some of them could be said to be a flavor of the season/year such as Rem, Zero Two, Albedo and Sonico to name a few. I too think FOMO has a big part playing into collectors decisions to buy very popular figures. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't brought a few figures cause of FOMO, some examples are the 1/4 Bunny Albedo, Alter Jeanne d'Arc, and a few others I can't remember. As for franchises with the biggest aftermarket spikes I was not too shocked to see some of the most popular series out there with very sought after figures, but the one that surprised me the most was MLP. I watched MLP FIM a few years back and loved it ; I was so glad Kotobukiya started yo make figures for them. Over the few years they made each figure I got all of the original releases, I was genuinely surprised to see the whole MLP set was very expensive in the aftermarket. For franchises who's figures tanked in the aftermarket it wasn't too surprising seeing popular series drop as they have a flood of figures from many different companies in the market. I pretty sure these type of figures are ones you don't collect but I am curious to know how the aftermarket is towards NSFW figures. Do these figures tend to spike or tank in the aftermarket? An example of a figure that at one point skyrocketed in the after market was the original release of Caroline Yuri who was selling on the aftermarket for upwards of maybe $800-1k! ( I believe the possible reason for her insane aftermarket value as she was released during the height of COVID 19, and not many collectors could afford her at that point in time.) However with the recently released tanned version of Caroline Yuri, the original Caroline Yuri has dropped considerably to a more reasonable $250-$350 on some sites like Amiami preowned or Buyee. Two examples of figures who's aftermarkets have spiked are the 1/4 scale reverse bunny suit Sophia F. Shirring and the 1/5 scale Onazuki Kaede. Both of whom in the aftermarket have either doubled or tripled in their initial value upon release on some site such as Nin Nin Game, Amiami preowned and Buyee. For Sophia I can only assume (upon research) she is sought after because reverse bunnies don't get made that often. As for Onazuki Kaede she was illistrated by a famous artist Asanagi as well as having a partner figure Onazuki Kurumi in the works, which could explain her aftermarket value being so high.

Is it just me, or figures should never hit 200+ USD MSRP, even with shipping, taxes, and conversion? The only things that should be allowed to go over that price is like that Sailor Moon flower statue, or that Kusanagi Makoto statue (the one that has all those wires), or that chunli power lifting statue. But who knows, a lot might go into the manufacturing process for stuff to be so high. I could have sworn high quality figures used to be in the 50 to 75 usd range.
