Just a heads up proton is not an emulator, it's a translation layer, which actually translates DirectX calls to vulkan, this process is way faster than emulation, that is why we see near identical performance compared to windows systems. This tech really blows my mind, how well made it is.
@TechAdventure12 жыл бұрын
Thank you!
@Eimantasks2 жыл бұрын
@Gurney yeah, I suppose it's a more detailed answer, I just crammed it all in to "translation layer" term without mentioning DXVK, VKD3D, WINED3D, wine, just trying to make a point that translation layer is way faster than emulation, but if one is curious, this answer is definitely more thorough. if one wants more data, this is an excellent video on how it all works underneath kzbin.info/www/bejne/gWrOmZePpbJ8a9U
@Code_Eye2 жыл бұрын
@Gurney not exactly, you're right dxvk translates the directx API, but proton doesn't "bundle" or anything, proton just like dxvk translates. basically wine and by extension proton, translates windows softwareinto something linux can understand.
@aaaa9r2 жыл бұрын
AFAIK, Proton is Wine with some additional patches to improve better compatibility for some games
@seeibe2 жыл бұрын
To call it a translation layer is also not accurate. In very simplified terms, Proton is Linux pretending to be Windows, while the program runs "natively" and nothing has to be translated. That's what makes it fast. It's also why Proton can't run on non-x86 CPUs.

I think the sleep / suspend function is the most useful feature that people don't talk about much. It's *the thing* that makes this a portable device, imo. All other handheld consoles have had a suspend feature since the GameBoy Advance in 2001, so it's really important that Valve were able to successfully add this to PC architecture. It's something that (as far as I know) not a lot of the other Deck-like competitors out there have this, or don't seem to have implemented it as well as Valve. When I play games on my desktop PC it's always an ordeal to get everything set up, which can take several minutes, but when I play on my Switch it's just 4 button presses and I'm straight back into my game, without even a loading screen!

Great video. The best thing about the discourse surrounding the Deck is the pure passion you can sense from people when they talk about it. I get it too. As much as I have loved PC gaming for most of my teenage and adult life, that initial spark - which for me was transitioning from the sub 30fps performance of the 360 to the unchained potential of a PC - has never quite been replicated. That's not to say I've ever fallen out of favour with gaming, it has and, I hope, will remain forever, but the sheer giddiness of getting my first PC and tinkering to squeeze as much greatness as I could out of it just hasn't been matched... Until the Steam Deck, a formidable performer given the form factor, but obviously nothing in comparison to a beefy tower, and yet tinkering with games individually, exploring hacks others have created and still playing console/PC quality games (and most importantly, being able to play FPS or mouse-heavy games) on a handheld has been surreal. It seriously evokes that same child-like buzz for when I got my first PC, never letting it leave my mind. Whether I wanted it to or not, the Deck just won't get out of my head, and I love it.

I honestly think the biggest thing about the deck that few talk about is the fact it's a mini PC. That's all it is, but with the added functionality of a built-in gamepad and display. Similarly specced mini PCs aren't even that much cheaper if you factor in those two things. I think when USB-C hub support grows without having to spring for the $50 dock, you could literally just buy the deck and use it as a desktop PC, then unplug it and take it on the go. That's pretty incredible. Just for perspective, my desktop PC was a bit over $300 (and that's with a Microcenter here), and it's only a bit better than the deck, without the portable aspects.

I haven't got my Steam Deck yet but I'm in the Q3 queue so hopefully I won't have to wait much longer. I've been preparing by for example following which games are already verified or playable, and currently there's about 270 titles in my Library are are either one of those. Verified games alone are a little over 130. However, over the years various games may end up in a library from bundles or sales so I've made a little bit smaller collection in my library that only contains verified games that I'm more or less interested in. That collection has about 80 games at the moment. It's great how there is already a good number of games ready to be installed and played when I get my hands on the Deck. I'm well aware that not all games will be fully or partially supported, and about 10% games in my library are currently unsupported. All I can hope is that they improve their support for games over time and also go through more and more games. Honestly speaking I'm not even sure which game I'd like to play first. I've been thinking I might want to try a game that I'm already familiar with so I can practice the inputs and buttons but it could also be exciting to try a game that I haven't played yet. Anyway, I'm very excited for the Steam Deck and I can hardly wait to try it out.

@@dwoodfolk89 I got the mail on Monday and it was in "processing" and "shipping soon" status for a while but on Thursday the status changed to "shipping" with an email from Steam and giving me a tracking number. Later I got email from GLS informing me that they are delivering it. All I need to do is wait and hope it gets delivered safely.

Old games have so much potential here because many of the ui elements were designed for an even lower resolution than what's on offer here. Which is why I'm super stoked to get this, because I have my desktop 3070ti for modern stuff, but I'll be able to delegate older stuff to a more sustainable and comfortable option.

hey thanks! Honestly, I figured this video would get like 1K views max, since that's kinda how my channel performs. And I don't do any post-production or editing. But it's ok, so many people have enjoyed the video. That matters way more to me than any hate I've received.

Nice video. The 4-back buttons are best pressed by pressing them directly into the BACK of the system, not into the grips. Best to start that habit early and build that muscle memory...makes actually using them way easier and more enjoyable.

The right track pad has unexpectedly replaced the right joystick in most games for my look/aim functions. It's the most control and accuracy I've ever experienced without using a mouse. I would highly recommend everyone give it a try and mess with the sensitivity settings till you find your sweet spot.

The buttons in the face are not designed to be "gripped" with the fingers. The fingers have to "push out" the buttons, it feels just as natural and much much easier to push, that's a smart way to avoid you clikcing these buttons unintentionally.

Currently contemplating whether to save for ps5 or steam deck. I don't have a tv for the ps5 yet so steam deck looks like the way to go but I'm looking forward to gow ragnarok so I'm a lil bit confused. What you guys think?
@TechAdventure12 жыл бұрын
For GOW I’d play it on PS5 before Deck. The great thing about Deck is the library and that’s especially true if you already have a bunch of games on Steam.

I have Origin installed on my Deck. The thing I hate is that you have to run the Origin client and then awkwardly scroll through the menus to get to your games. I wish I could I just add the game to Steam after installing with Origin like you can do in Windows. Makes me just want to re-buy all my Origin games on Steam so there is less hassle.
@TechAdventure12 жыл бұрын
You can! You can find the exe for your game and add it to steam!
@mhinkle822 жыл бұрын
@@TechAdventure1 How do you find the exe? It's buried in a bunch of folders named with random numbers. I tried to do a search and nothing came up.
@TechAdventure12 жыл бұрын
Ya that’s the hard part. When you install the games they get a string like 01234567. You have to look through each one to determine which is the game you want. I suppose you could google search the name of the exe and then search your Deck too. Once you have the path you’re golden.
@Wesmoen2 жыл бұрын
You can add your game's exe as a non steam game. You only need to add STEAM_COMPAT_DATA_PATH="/home/deck/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/" %command% To the launcher options of the game's exe. Every non steam added game will be put in it's own compat folder. Otherwise the game will think origin isn't installed.
