That contract story is insane. I love what Paul Heyman did for wrestling and admire his mind but that piece of paper he wanted you to sign wasnt worth the money it cost to print and put ink on. Im glad you had the foresight to not trust him. My jaw literally dropped hearing he wanted you to sign a sheet with no years or money listed. Ive heard plenty of shady heyman stories that now with time are kinda funny like the extra number on a fed ex bubba had to ship or whatever but that one is legit scary. Much love to you stevie. This is a great show! I only found it about a week or so ago, this is my first new episode that im hearing. Really great stuff!

I think the best thing about KZbin now with wrestling is that it allows wrestlers to have platforms like this. To where I always liked Stevie as a wrestler but I never knew anything about him other than his character and thought he deserved way more than what he was given later in his career. But seeing this show I get to know Stevie and his views on wrestling and his personality and it makes me like him a wrestler even more. Makes me want to go watch the matches he’s talking about with him in it even more. To see he likes video games he likes tech, he likes fitness to see he’s so similar to us in many ways is cool. I’m just waiting in anticipation for that Dr Stevie and TNA episode because that’s such an underrated part of his career. Underrated because TNA never gets the love it deserves from around that time period

I'm so glad to see guys like Stevie Richards and Maven carve out their space on this platform and thrive in it. I always preferred to watch the "mid card" acts in wrestling because the upper card always had backing and I always seen myself as an underdog in everything I did so I related to them. Obviously I wouldn't ever compare myself to these amazing pro wrestlers but it's how you looked at it as a teenager. Thank you all for sharing your stories and I'm thoroughly enjoying the content ☺️❤️🌎🙏🏼

Excellent episode as always and I love hearing the combined depth of knowledge and history Stevie and James collectively had. My only nitpick is that the episode is titled "Paul F'n Heyman" and there's more time talking about wrestling managers than the title topic. Didn't make it less interesting, but it was a touch surprising at how long the segment went.

James we did get the 3.34 inch G.I Joe figures here under the name Action Force, also the American G.I Joe comics were out here as Action Force Weekly. The first couple of waves of action force smaller figures were original, then it changed to just G.I Joe figures repackaged. Also got a lot of other stuff here you say we didn't it just seems like you lived a very sheltered life without toys, tv, movies or general pop culture.

Hey Doc Stevie and James! This was a really deep episode. I absolutely have a lot of mixed feeling about Paul E. From one stand point I love a lot of what he has brought to and done for the business. But my gawd... he has also done so much harm to people. It's terribly confusing. But really, when you look at the history of wrestling it's just chock full of problematic people. Dynamite Kid, fantastic talent, inspired *a lot* of other people but I think we all know some of the things that kind of tarnish his legacy. Atsushi Onita. Fabulous Moolah. Chris Benoit... I could probably run out of characters typing a list of just names. It's an imperfect business, in an imperfect world full of complicated and flawed people. Yet, I still love pro-wrestling with all my heart. And I honestly don't know what that says about me sometimes. 😅🤔

Stevie's comment at the 1:04 mark about how people used to travel for hours just to work on the show for free for experience - that's not just in the past. Check out Gabe Sapolsky's Wresting Spaces. As recently as this past WM weekend, there were a ton of new people who traveled inter-state to work on indie shows, mainly in backstage roles for no money whatsoever & were delighted to get that experience.

C’mon James, we had G.I.Joe over here and it was huge. A big part of my childhood. It stared off as Action Force which was a spin off of Action Man to capitalise on the popularity of Star Wars scale Figures. The US G.I.Joe figures took over the line under the Action Force brand until Hasbro phased the G.I.Joe brand fully into the UK market. You crazy guy.

When Stevie Richards sayed "too exciting about it James!" when in fact James made a slight "WTF?!"-face after the annoncing of the give away-idea, really made me laugh a lot! 😂 Because it simply adds to the impression that James is not a fan to give a shout out or support to any content creator, unless that person has a big name and could help his own channel. James said he is sick, So accept that escuse for such a face, but still. It was funny!

Stevie’s words starting around 45 minutes in really struck a chord. I worked as a ref and occasional wrestler in North Texas for several years, and while I do have a small handful of guys that I consider lifelong friends, most I have no intention of ever interacting with again. So many of the workers are just awful people. I saw guys do really, really terrible things with “rats” that I somehow justified at the time, but looking back makes me feel ill.

For your "Future episode" - your question at 1:38 regarding the psychological mindset of charismatic leaders (in this case Paul Heyman): While I don't do research on personality traits, he - like many leaders - might arguably be high in the "Dark Triad" traits of Machievellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy (of which the first two are arguably extremely important for success in professional wrestling). However, more to my research (nonverbal behavior and political leadership) - and personal experience - leaders often create (consciously or unconsciously) "niches" in which they are the heroes of the narratives they create about themselves - and surround themselves with followers that reinforce this (Tommy Dreamer - by being the "first follower" and exceptionally competent and [presumably] respected in the backstage area - likely enabled this in a similar manner that an NCO enables commissioned officers in the military to be successful). The personality flaws y'all mention are likely even more so in the case with leaders whose public performance relies upon connection with their audience (pro wrestling, politics, religion, etc.). Charismatic leaders are highly expressive nonverbally (facial behavior, gestures, voice tone) and have to make sure their words and behavior cohere together in order to convince others - in short, they have to convince themselves in order to convince others. When the words don't match the nonverbal behavior (micro-expressions, eye blink rate, displacement gestures, and my favorite - unilateral/one-sided shoulder shrugs) people subconsciously pick up on it (in other words, that gut feeling we have). So when you have big personalities self-selecting to become involved in an industry (here, pro wrestling), and then they dial up their personalities to an "11" - and these individuals have no real established outside checks on their behavior, then you have a recipe for self- and other-deception - with all the bad outcomes you mention (and yes, we here in academia have the same problem!). As a side note - thanks for the Minnesota wrestling call out! My fondest memories are watching Twin Cities (AWA?) pro wrestling with my Grandfather in 1970s.
