Thanks Stevie and James. I've been a fan of Stevie Richards from the day I seen him and Raven go up against The Pitbulls! I remember him working the dark match at ECW December to Dismember against Rene Dupree and it was one of the best matches on the card.
@BoscosFinds6 күн бұрын
Hey Stevie. Totally disagree with your take on the Awesome-Tanaka match... These two had absolutely legendary hardcore matches against each other throughout the 90s. It's truly fitting that they saved their best for last. That match stole the show!

I'd also like to add that, in regards to the JBL chairshot incident, I applaud Stevie for his position in taking responsibility for the injury he caused. People might say, "Oh, JBL was in the wrong, he doesn't deserve that respect", but real morals and principles are the things you do when nobody's looking. I think it speaks to the quality of Stevie's character as a professional and as a human being in general that he is firm in that conviction. Class act.

It's asked in the show "what did the Awesome Tanaka match bring to this?" It SOLD this fucking show, at school everyone that liked wrestling talked about THAT match and still talk about it as THE match of this show.

100%. He's totally out of touch with public perception of this match which surprised me (I'm usually in agreement with Stevie). It's the number one thing we were all talking about at the time

Always love listening to Stevie's observations knowing that he's both a guy who has been in the locker room with some of the premier wrestlers in the business at some of the biggest moments in the business, but also as someone who is humble and knowledgeable about the ins and outs of what makes wrestling work on multiple levels. I'm at the point in the episode as I'm writing this speculating on the reasons why the Guerrero/Benoit match on the ONS show just didn't click. Personally, the theory I've always gravitate towards is that Eddie's heart just really wasn't in it. I don't know anything about his personal connection to ECW, but you could really feel the vibe watching him on that show that he just didn't want to be there. I remember he was in the middle of his heel turn and trying to get heat on his feud with Rey, and I'm sure that the ONS felt in some respect like a distraction from the work he was invested in. Eddie was also well known for being a perfectionist and having some pretty notorious mood swings, so I'm sure if he came into the match frustrated to begin with, it would've been tough to get his head in the game, no matter how much of a seasoned pro he was. I think you can feel in the dynamic that night that Benoit was having to take charge and try to coax out Eddie's enthusiasm and get him to perform to the standard the two of them were capable of, but it was like pulling teeth. Just one step forward, two steps back through the whole match. I can only speculate, but I think when you watch that it feels very obvious that Benoit had his working boots on and Eddie just wasn't feeling it, and that's where the awkward struggle to get the match going comes into play. Someone else in the comments mentioned Eddie was allegedly working through an injury that night to, and as James notes he was also working a considerably different style with more miles under the hood than he did when he was in ECW, so I'm sure those factors didn't help. IIRC, you can visibly see Eddie say "I'm sorry" to Benoit after the match, so you know they felt like they didn't do their best work that night. At the end of the day, as Stevie said, it was just an off night for them for one reason or another, and you hate to see that knowing just how incredible a pair of wrestlers they were.

I remember watching ECW as a teenager on TV. It was the later 90s, and the show came on after midnight, like 2am maybe. I want to say it came on Fridays, because I would go to my friends house to watch it. It would come on regularly for a few months at a time and then not be on for a few months at a time. It was really weird and you had to work to watch it. It was such a reward to get to watch it when it did come on.

The attitude era and ECW happening alongside one another cements them together as the 2nd golden age of pro wrestling. Film, music, videogames anything has it's time and place. I think trading cards peaked when I was a kid because we didn't have the smartphones and other distractions yet, it was a unique time that likely won't be replicated again. The storytelling peaked then and it was good enough to draw casuals like breaking bad or game of thrones did. It was a combination of wrestling psychology and fundamentals being there, mixed with a proper vision of storytelling and ring psychology. All those pieces are gone and it's different now.

I remember watching the first One Night Stand 2005, not expecting much, but from start to finish, it was great. The Mike Awesome vs. Masato Tanaka was the show stealer. The risks they took were insane tough, and there were no aggressive gymnastics.

Jericho vs Storm to start the PPV was a brilliant choice and probably the best match of the night. Apparently Eddie had been battling some kind of back issue that night and that is why he wasn't as smooth as usual. Then he gets his nose busted by Chris and that was the icing on the top of this bad match.

For me none of those shoot matches involving male wrestlers come anything close to the two ladies in Stardom's infamous 'Ghastly Match' in Japan between Act Yasukawa and Yoshiko. To this day that remains for me one of the most harrowing shoots I've ever seen.
